BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent s’impose à Doha devant Bolliger Team Switzerland et Honda TT Legends.

Podium inédit et course à rebondissements sur le circuit de Losail pour les 8 Heures de Doha. La victoire du BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent était pourtant annoncée par ses performances en essais. Erwan Nigon, Sébastien Gimbert et Damian Cudlin ont pris le commandement dès le départ pour ne plus le quitter. Après trois poles positions à Doha, la BMW officielle décroche enfin la victoire.

Le Kawasaki Bolliger Team Switzerland décroche une deuxième place méritée. Après avoir pris la cinquième place sur la grille de départ derrière les écuries officielles, Horst Saiger, Roman Stamm et Jérôme Tangre mènent la Kawasaki privée sur la deuxième marche du podium, à trois tours de la BMW. Le Honda TT Legends complète le podium à Doha avec un équipage inédit, Ryuichi Kiyonari, Michael Laverty et Jason O’Halloran, en l’absence de ses titulaires engagés sur le TT.

Ce podium inédit met à l’honneur trois constructeurs différents mais aussi trois manufacturiers, Michelin pour la BMW, Pirelli pour la Kawasaki et Dunlop pour la Honda.

Les autres teams officiels ont connu des courses difficiles. Seul le Suzuki Endurance Racing Team limite la casse et termine quatrième. Retardé par deux fois par une fuite sur une durite d’huile, le SERT a perdu jusqu’à 8 tours sur la tête de course. « Nous utilisons ces durites depuis des années. Elles sont aussi utilisées en F1, explique Dominique Meliand. Nous devons avoir un lot de durites mal usinées. C’est un morceau de 10 cm qui nous fait perdre de gros points au championnat. » Le SERT prend cependant la tête du classement provisoire.

Malgré des chutes en début de course, Maco Racing Team, Yamalube Folch Endurance et le team R2CL réussissent à rallier l’arrivée dans les points. Mais d’autres candidats à la victoire reviennent du Qatar sans point supplémentaire. Ces abandons vont marquer le championnat. Le Monster Energy Yamaha YART a été stoppé par un problème moteur à mi-course alors que la Yamaha officielle autrichienne se battait devant avec BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent pour la victoire. Abandon aussi pour la Yamaha France GMT 94 Michelin Yamalube, rapidement handicapée par des problèmes de surchauffe. « Le moteur a beaucoup trop chauffé, explique David Checa, auteur d’un bon départ, et il n’était plus possible de suivre la tête de course. »

En Superstock, la Suzuki 1 du Qatar Endurance Racing Team de Nasser Al Malki, Anthony West et Nina Prinz s’impose avec un tour d’avance sur la Suzuki du Team Motors Events AMT Assurances de Guillaume Dietrich, Frédéric Moreira et Michael Savary.

Honda TT Legends on the podium in Doha

At the culmination of the 8-hours of Doha, the Honda TT Legends ended with a fantastic third place to earn the team their first podium in the Endurance World Championship. The achievement marks a successful end to a week that has also seen a string of triumphs at the Isle of Man TT for regular team members on duty at their namesake event.

Stand-in riders Michael Laverty, Jason O’Halloran and Ryuichi Kiyonari rode a faultless race from start to finish with ultra-consistent lap times throughout. The 2012 ABS-equipped CBR1000RR and the slick Honda TT Legends pit stop crew did not miss a beat; a change of rear break calipers all that was needed to complete the 8-hour duration.

In the top-five from the early stages, the Honda TT Legends climbed as high as second before settling into third position as the race progressed. A late charge from reigning World Champions SERT was repelled to cement a place on the podium as the chequered flag dropped against a backdrop of the Qatar night sky.

The 2012 Isle of Man TT came to a close today with the already postponed Senior race being cancelled for the first time in the event’s 105-year history. A course inspection by race control and rider representatives, including Honda TT Legend John McGuinness, deemed the race unsafe to go ahead due to poor weather conditions.

I think it was the right decision to cancel the race today. I’d love to be here tomorrow waiting for the sun to shine so we can race, but that's not an option and for me, the track just wasn’t quite right. Racing my favourite bike here, starting at the front and possibly winning races is the best thing in the world, but I’m also really nervous about riding the big bikes in patchy and damp conditions. It’s disappointing for everybody but tomorrow’s another day and we’re already looking forward to next year.
