    Zoute Grand Prix 2012

The Zoute Grand Prix and Concours d’Elegance 2012 was held 4-7 October on the coast of Belgium.

Now in its third year the Zoute Grand Prix has firmly settled itself on the Belgian Classic car scene as a force to be reckoned with. For three days in the first weekend of October, there’s a big mix of classic, modern and a luxury lifestyle scene in the posh coastal city of Knokke-Zoute.
What started out as a two-day rally has grown into a full blown car weekend with fifteen high-end car manufacturers present, the original classic rally, a Concours d’Elegance and, new for 2012, a GT Tour for modern sports cars.

With 160 cars at the rally, the coastline and shopping streets were filled with displays of the latest Range Rovers, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Bentleys and so on and the rest of the town got an overload of owners who decided to show up with their modern hardware as well.

MotoGP Motegi: Dani Pedrosa takes over in FP2

The second free practice at the Twin Ring track at Motegi was an affair between Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo, the Repsol Honda rider posted the best lap in 1.46.088 to clear the Yamaha rider by 0.102s but Pedrosa was on soft tires while Jorge Lorenzo posted his best time on hard tires, as did Andrea Dovizioso who jumped to third with his last flying lap and was just 0.092s from his factory counterpart.
Stefan Bradl moved up to fourth place with his satellite Honda also in the final minutes of the session and both Dovizioso and Bradl demoted Valentino Rossi to fifth after the Italian took a momentary third place. The Ducati rider was six tenths adrift, but it was one of his better sessions in the dry and his best time was on a used tire.
Ben Spies also moved up the chart in the finale to take sixth just 0.066s ahead of still-not-fit Casey Stoner who did another 14 laps this afternoon, but he seems to be lamenting chattering on his RC213V. Alvaro Bautista was 0.005s behind Stoner, while Cal Crutchlow was uncharacteristically down in 9th, but from sixth to ninth the riders were separated by a mere 0.070s.
Closing out the top ten was Nicky Hayden, but the American is suffering from a radius fracture to his right wrist. Yamaha wild card rider Katsuyuki Nakasuga once again finished ahead of satellite Ducati rider Hector Barbera, while Aleix Espargaro was faster than Karel Abraham who suffered a crash as did Randy de Puniet.

Dani Pedrosa was the second quickest rider at Honda’s home circuit and he was just 0.141 slower than his title rival and sandwiched between another Yamaha rider Andrea Dovizioso who was third fastest with his satellite M1.
Casey Stoner’s return to action after his ankle injury was immediately problematic as his Honda had technical issues after a just a few corners on his first outlap and he had to park it against one of the barriers, but the Australian was up to speed despite having missed the last three rounds by taking the fourth best time on his penultimate lap. Stoner did 12 laps testing his fitness on the difficult ’stop-and-go’ circuit.
Ben Spies was fifth followed by his Yamaha counterpart Cal Crutchlow. Nicky Hayden was the fastest Ducati rider with his seventh spot and he is riding with fractured radius picked up after his Aragaon crash and he was the last rider to be within a second from Lorenzo. Honda satellite riders Stefan Bradl and Alvaro Bautista were 8th and 9th respectively, while Valentino Rossi who was expecting to be more competitive at the Japanese circuit was a lowly tenth and more than 1.2 seconds off pace.
Katsuyuki Nakasuga, Yamaha’s wildcard riding under the YSP racing banner was 11th fastest ahead of Ducati satellite riders Hector Barbera and Karel Abraham who were accusing more than 2.5 seconds from Lorenzo and were just a tenth faster than Aspar CRT riders Aleix Espargaro and Randy de Puniet. Espargaro suffered a harmless crash early in the practice.
Roberto Rolfo debuted with Speed Master taking the place of Mattia Pasini and was 20th and ahead of returning Avintia Blusens rider Ivan Silva who was back after David Saloms’s very brief stint in MotoGP.
