Emotion - Dakar XtreM Adventure powered by Michelin

Emotion, mixed with pride and joy, was running high when the 2013 Dakar’s survivors reached the finish in Santiago after an adventure of some 8,500 kilometres across South America.
C’est avec une grande émotion, mêlée de fierté et de bonheur, que les rescapés du Dakar 2013 sont entrés dans Santiago du Chili après 8500 kilomètres parcourus à travers l’Amérique du Sud.
Like Alonso de Monroy’s troops in 1543, we departed from Lima, Peru, and were welcomed into the city of Santiago, Chile, as heroes. There were no conquistadors amongst us, just competitors and adventurers with a taste for exploring labyrinths of dunes, rios, the Andes Mountains and the Atacama Desert on modern-day steeds: bikes, cars, trucks and quads…
At the end of the event’s final stage, between Santiago and Valparaiso, we could see drivers and riders celebrating, bikers sat in the shade of the acacia trees almost crying, like Italy’s Lorenzo Napodano who had just fulfilled a dream of 30 years, that of reaching the finish of his first Dakar. The fears and joys he had experienced over the last punishing two weeks could be clearly read in his eyes.
After the stage, Ruta 5, which slices through the outskirts of Santiago, set the scene for a joyful procession as the Dakar’s caravan entered the Chilean capital to the cheers of thousands of curious onlookers along the streets and around the service park, near the Club Hipico.
Meanwhile, the Palacio de la Moneda was preparing to host the official finish ceremony on the podium which the competitors crossed after a parade down Avenida Bernardo O’Higgins to Plaza Baquenado, between the San Borja and Cerra Santa Lucia parks, where the city was founded in 1541.
Palacio de la Moneda is one of the finest buildings left by the Spaniards in Latin America, although they stopped minting coins there a long time ago. Today, it serves as Chile’s presidential headquarters and still shows marks of the Republic’s more turbulent past.
It’s a public holiday in Santiago and the sunshine gradually clears the morning fog blown in from the Pacific to show off the rally cars, trucks and bikes at their pristine, glinting best. For the last time, haggard bodies slip into worn race suits. Proudly wearing their Michelin caps, the heroes of this extraordinary competition are ready for the ceremony in front of the Palacio de la Moneda...

Bulgarian customizer Ivaylo Trendafilov from the workshop “Galaxy Customs” built a cool Bobber based motorcycle BMW R1200R 2008. Initially the task was to make a classic motorcycle with elements of retro, but modern enough, especially with regard to mechanics.
Ivaylo Trendafilov and his team redesigned the frame to change the center of gravity and the angle of the fork. As a result, the bike was a little lower and more consistent with the chosen style. It was removed after the front suspension BMW Telelever, in place which put Ivaylo classic adjustable fork.

The customizer used the BMW R71 motorcycle fuel tank. He remade for the fuel pump wiring, and most of all the electronics. Trendafilov use native wheel, but made it more compact. He also set filters K & N, which gives the bike sports features and improve the sound of the engine.

Repsol Honda teases official team presentation

    repsol honda team presentation
Repsol Honda riders Dani Pedrosa and Marc Márquez will be revealing their new Honda RC213V’s on Thursday, January 24th. The 2013 team presentation of the Repsol Honda Team will be held at Repsol’s corporate headquarters in Madrid.
To build up a little suspense ahead of the presentation, Box Repsol released these photo teasers - via their Facebook page - of the two bikes under wraps and locked in a vaguely morgue-like storage space.
“A promise is a promise… so here you have more clues about the surprise we had yesterday at our Campus Repsol. You cannot deny that the clues are more and more specific… We bet that you can sense the shape of the surprise that is hidden from view! ;) was the caption under the photos.
There have been rumors that the Repsol Honda (the Spanish energy company has been HRC’s sponsor since 1995) will be refreshing the orange, red, white and blue livery, but we’ll just have to wait until Thursday to see if it’s true.

    1981 Yamaha XV750 - 'Black Mat Ed'

Most builders using the XV750 as a base for their custom project have usually been inspired by the likes of Classified Moto – who have shown the amazing potential of these previously overlooked donor bikes. Not Tony Mroczek from Poland (yes another one, we are big there). He has been inspired by something completely different. "The inspiration came from Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands movie" he says. "From an early age I've been completely crazy about everything related to Tim Burton’s creation". Tony has also grown up with many different motorcycles. Actually, over the years he has owned numerous Yamaha's and Kawasaki's of every capacity, but now he is enjoying this custom XV he likes to call 'Black Mat Ed' – it's the latest creation to come out of Tonys garage named 'Fabryka Edwarda' or 'Edward's Factory' in english.

Tony started this low-budget project by removing everything off the bike that wasn't necessary. "I wanted to have a lighter bike with a thinner, dynamic look" he says. "That’s why there is no front or rear fender. The only massive, beautifully shaped part of the bike was supposed to be a tank and the front suspension which was taken from a 2001 Yamaha’s R1."

"The upside down forks look massive again and gives very specific, clear and strong character to the bike. The mounting seat has been created from scratch. Custom seat was bought from Harley Davidson and then painted gold. I decided to paint some other parts golden to match the front suspension. But first I had an idea to paint it brazen. I used a golden color because it contrasts really well with black – black frame, wheels, matt tank and other parts. And I think it looks very enigmatic... what I like most."

Tony wanted the exhaust to be modest and not very conspicuous. "But quite noisy" he says. The front rim, brakes calliper and brake plate also came from a R1. All tires are new and Metzeler Marathons. Battery is installed at the bottom of the frame, between two wheels.

Tony decided to leave the stock tank, which has been slightly raised up. The tank isn't quite finished yet though. "I will be painting the tank with Tim Burton inspired artwork, probably associated with Edward Scissorhands and Nightmare Before Christmas stuff."

This young Polish builder is blown away by how much fun the bike is to ride. "It's absolutely amazing to ride." he says. "While riding you feel absolutely free. The engine purrs so nicely. It feels like you are cutting the air with a really sharp knife." Or maybe with a pair scissors?
