    Garage Project’s W650

The guys at Garage Project Motorcycles downunda may seem to be relatively new kids on the block when it comes to building, but I love their bikes, their attitude and they way they tell it.
They’ve always been inspired by neighbors, Deus ex Machina but I think their work stands up for itself, and even the story of their first build shows an attention to detail and quality – as well as good taste - that needs no comparisons.
Like Deus they chose the custom-builder’s favourite; the W650, as their first project.
The build started back in August 2009 with the intention of creating a flat tracker with modified frame, custom exhaust and tank, revitalised engine, upgraded suspension and brakes, rebuilt wheels and a head-turning paintjob – complete with pinup babe.
What followed was all of that, and a whole lot more motorcyle goodness.
The blog on their own site tells the story in full detail, with photos showing thieir inspiration, and even what they were trying to avoid, so if you like what you see here, do them a favour and go check out their blog for yourself.
Meanwhile this is the finished bike, and I think it’s a beauty, mate.
    Don’tcha just love carbs!

V8 SUPERCAR: Bright Sparks Record Testing Day

A V8 SUPERCAR testing session that turned into a shootout for the day’s quickest time has been watched by nearly 18,000 people today at Sydney Motorsport Park.
The stunning crowd of 17,600 – a record for any pre-season official V8 Supercar test day - braved intermittent showers this afternoon to watch Brad Jones Racing duo Jason Bright and Fabian Coulthard complete a one-two sweep of today’s running and topple the circuit practice in the process.
A highlight of the day was a packed start-finish straight as thousands of fans had a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with their favourite drivers or cars during the lunch break – but the on-track action was just as scintillating.
This afternoon’s session resembled the last 10 minutes of a qualifying session rather than a test day.
Driving his Team BOC Commodore, Bright topped today’s running with a 1m28.9655s lap that was comfortably underneath Craig Lowndes’ previous record of 1m29.2493s.
Coulthard, second, also dipped under the existing benchmark in his sister BJR entry, trailing Bright by just 0.0402s after more than six hours of total running today.
Intermittent rain showers made this afternoon’s session more of a challenge for teams and drivers, several teams only getting minimal running in between showers.
Today’s results will be a pleasing result for the hard-working Albury based team who were far from the first in getting their next-generation V8 Supercars to the circuit – their first car only getting its first shakedown early in January.
Holden’s dominated this afternoon’s running with David Reynolds and Mark Winterbottom making progress for the Factory Ford team, Pepsi Max Crew FPR, and cracking the Top 10.
As he did earlier in the day, Rick Kelly ended a promising day for Nissan Motorsport in fifth place driving his Jack Daniel’s Altima. Overall, today’s top-10 featured seven Holdens, two Fords and Kelly’s Nissan.
Regardless of today’s activities – be they testing race packages or going for outright speed - it remains clear that Triple Eight Racing will continue to be a force in V8 Supercars and may in fact have strengthened their arsenal this year.
A total of five cars built by the Queensland-based team filled the Top 10 overall, including both Red Bull Racing Australia entries piloted by Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup.
Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport drivers Dean Fiore (4th) and South Australian rookie Scott Pye (6th) were highly impressive in their plain-white VF Holdens, whilst Jonathon Webb’s Tekno Autosport VF was 10th.
Shane van Gisbergen – inside the top 10 this morning on his first ‘official’ run in a Holden – ended the day 12th quickest overall.
German driver Maro Engel was the quickest of the Erebus Motorsport Mercedes AMG trio, finishing the day 14th in his #9 SP Tools Racing entry.
The impressive sportscar and GT ace had run well inside the Top-10 earlier in the afternoon sessions, before being shuffled down the order as the quick times came towards the end of the day.
Slade (20th) and Holdsworth (24th) only gained limited laps this afternoon with Engel doing the bulk of the running but proving he has what it takes to succeed in V8 Supercars.
Whilst several V8 teams will now concentrate on preparations for the Clipsal 500 Adelaide in two weeks, several have plans for private testing between now and the season opener.
25 cars of the 28 that will start the season opener ran today; Nissan Motorport electing to test Todd Kelly and Michael Caruso next week in Victoria.
Dick Johnson Racing is yet to confirm a second driver though it is understood the team has their selection down to three candidates.
The Clipsal 500 Adelaide will be held between February 28-March 3rd.

AN EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW OF THE MCLAREN P1

McLaren’s P1 is getting closer and close to the final production version following its dramatic reveal at last year’s Paris Motor Show. Over the following months, new images have been slowly trickling out of the McLaren Technology Centre, taunting us with more and more little details.
Getting access to the car itself seemed virtually impossible – but Speedhunters were recently granted exclusive access to the P1 at McLaren’s base in Los Angeles before it left to go on its world tour.
McLaren’s LA showroom was closed down for the night, though it still clearly displayed the treasures within. But we were interested in what was out back…
At McLaren’s nearby storage facility, the P1 was guarded by a whole platoon of MP4-12Cs waiting to be delivered into the hands of expectant customers.
The 12C is hardy a staid looking car, but in the company of the exotic P1 it has to be said they seemed almost pedestrian!
It’s all in the lines of course. The bodywork of the P1 looks like it’s been draped over the car in gaseous form and then solidified into this sinuous, curvaceous shape.
I now find it unbelievable to think that it was the rear that I initially didn’t appreciate.
I think it was the F1-style extreme downward and inward tapering of the main body compared the large outboard fenders. Now, it’s my favourite part! It’s the combination of the curves with the rounded-off geometry of the rear end…
…and the way that the LED tail-lights gracefully trace their way around the inner edge of the wheel arches. It’s just stunning – and pure sci-fi.
The P1 gets more attractive each time I see it, especially in this kind of diffused light. The deep orange is achingly attractive, and serves to highlight the raw carbon components.
Everything about the P1 screams McLaren attention to detail and bespoke craftsmanship.
From the integration of the McLaren ‘swoosh’ icon into multiple areas of the body, like the obvious headlights…
…or the less obvious rear intakes.
There isn’t a straight line on the car. It’s a continuous riot of swooping and arcing carbon, moulded into these organic shapes.
The stretched hexagon-pattern grille over the rear accentuates the modern feel of the car – this is definitely not a car looking to the past for inspiration.
The deep cut-outs along the door-line hint at the serious aero power that’s going on though, over and under the skin. Downforce numbers are likely to be huge, and there are rumours of racecar-beating laptimes in testing.
The rear wing sits tucked away at the back, perfectly flush with the bodywork when not deployed.
The gull-wing doors hinge out and up on two pivots, with this being the roof-mounted part that extends the reach of the doors and makes for easier access. With the big cut-outs and outboard panels, the doors are wide old things…
Carbon is embedded in the DNA of the P1, from the monocoque outwards. Obvious ancillaries like the mirrors are expected, but even the window surrounds are also raw, unpainted composite.
The hexagon motif returns on the grille for the upper central brake light in compressed form.
And how about the bespoke McLaren-embossed rubber mounted on this P1?
The P1 is all about extreme performance: a KERS package will boost power to near 800hp, and pushrod suspension, adaptive dampers, hydraulic anti-roll control and advanced traction control in combination with the aerodynamics will keep all four wheels of the P1 firmly on the ground.
The interior was off-limits during our visit, as the cockpit was still being finalised. Some dash and interior shots have now been released, and further obsessive details put in the public domain – particularly the ones to do with weight saving. The cockpit carbon fibre has had its top layer of resin removed to save precious kilograms and interior carpet is only an option!
The P1′s official production car debut will be at next month’s Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland – I can’t wait to see the final evolution of this stunning car before it goes on general sale.
