We have no intention of taking about the world champion’s absence at every one of the nine rounds he will miss this season, but it has to be said that the service park at Léon’s vast Poliforum exhibition centre – and especially Citroën’s spot – feels a little strange without the Frenchman.
Just think: when Hirvonen, Latvala, Sordo, Ostberg, Ogier and Atkinson took part in their first world class rally, Loeb was already a works driver at the top of the ladder. As a result, none of these drivers has known anything but Loeb’s reign, while Citroën Racing’s more experienced engineers and mechanics started their WRC career’s working with the Alsace-born driver.
Didier Clément, who will now look after Dani Sordo’s DS3 WRC, was Loeb’s engineer since the 2002 Rallye Monte-Carlo which marked the beginning of an incredible adventure for both of them: “A page has turned, you’ve just got to accept it,” he says.
Jacky, the French driver’s ‘tyre man’, has prepared and cared for hundreds of tyres for the nine-time world champion: “Of course it feels weird. To tell the truth, when I sent the tyre-fitting order-slip to Michelin, I forget to replace ‘Loeb’ with ‘Sordo’.”
At the back of Citroën’s hospitality area, the champion’s name still shows on the board next to the fridge that announces the crews’ meal times. “That way, it’s like he’s with us,” smiles Will from the catering team. “There were less people around in the kitchen this morning; Seb and Daniel were always around at coffee time… Apart from that, though, it’s business as usual. Out of habit, I made some spicy toasted sandwiches today, but I’m not sure anyone will eat them. The Finns prefer omelettes…”
The team’s PR lady Marie-Pierre, who has looked after Seb for a decade, accompanying him to 115 post-rally press conferences, agrees that the atmosphere feels bizarre: “I just sent him a text message to tell him I was looking for him near the coffee machine, but the word is that we might see him in Argentina…”
“Just look at the facts: Seb and Daniel have been champions since I joined the team!” observes the team’s physio Marc, who has been responsible for waking the crew of the N°1 Citroën during events every day since 2004. “We tended to dine together at a meat restaurant every Monday. Last Monday, I ate alone.”
“We all had our own routines with Seb,” notes Citroën Racing boss Yves Matton who joined the ‘Reds’ in 2002, at the time of Loeb’s debut. “Some things are bound to change. This morning, for example, we all left the hotel on time! Seriously, though, our ‘statistics’ will change without Seb and Daniel. We know that. On paper, we will need to learn to win less. During my team talk here, I told everyone to stay motivated and work together to help our drivers in their bid to win the Manufacturers’ title and to continue to merit the nickname ‘Red Army’.”
Evidemment, on ne va pas parler de l’absence de Loeb sur les neuf rallyes qu’il va manquer cette saison, mais il faut bien reconnaître que le paddock du WRC – et surtout celui de Citroën - se sent un peu orphelin dans l’immense Poliforum de Léon.
Rendez-vous compte : quand les Hirvonen, Latvala, Sordo, Ostberg, Ogier, Atkinson ont disputé leur tout premier rallye mondial, Sébastien Loeb était déjà pilote officiel et jouait les premiers rôles. Tous ces pilotes n’ont connu que l’ère et le règne Loeb en WRC. Idem chez Citroën Racing où les plus anciens ingénieurs et mécaniciens ont débuté en Mondial aux côtés de Loeb.

Jacky, « tyre-man » de Loeb, a préparé et géré des centaines de pneumatiques pour le nonuple champion du monde : « Ca fait drôle, bien sûr. D’ailleurs, quand j’ai envoyé les bons de montage chez Michelin, j’avais laissé le nom de Loeb sur la fiche au lieu de Sordo. »
A l’arrière du stand Citroën également, le nom de Loeb figure toujours sur le panneau du timing des repas affiché près du réfrigérateur. « Comme ça, il est encore un peu avec nous », sourit « Will », le taulier de la cantine. « Il y a beaucoup moins de monde en cuisine ce matin. Avec « Seb » et « Danos », c’était toujours l’effervescence à l’heure du café ou à l’apéro. Sinon, c’est un rallye comme un autre. Par habitude, j’ai préparé des croque-monsieur épicés, mais je ne suis pas sûr qu’ils soient mangés. Les Finlandais en sont toujours à l’omelette… »
Pour Marie-Pierre, la responsable com’ du team qui a chouchouté « Seb » pendant dix ans, ce week-end est un peu particulier aussi : « On s’y est préparé, mais ça fait bizarre. Je viens de lui envoyer un sms pour lui dire que je le cherchais à la machine à café », nous a avoué celle qui a accompagné « Seb » à 115 conférences de presse d’après-course ! « Et puis on se dit qu’il va revenir en Argentine… »
« C’est simple : « Seb » et « Danos » sont champions depuis que je suis là », annonce modestement Marc Germain, le physio du team, qui a réveillé l’équipage n°1 tous les matins de rallye depuis 2004. « Les lundis soirs, on avait pour habitude d’aller manger une viande au restaurant. J’étais seul lundi, alors je lui ai envoyé un texto. « Seb » m’a répondu : « amusez-vous bien dans votre hangar ce week-end ! » Je lui ai dit : « Amuse-toi bien à tourner en rond avec ta McLaren ! »
« On avait nos petites habitudes avec « Seb », explique Yves Matton, le boss de Citroën Racing, qui a rejoint les Rouges en 2002, aux débuts de Loeb. « Les choses vont changer. Tiens, par exemple, ce matin, on est partis à l’heure de l’hôtel ! Plus sérieusement, Sans « Seb » et « Danos », les stats vont être différentes, c’est évident, on le sait. On va apprendre à potentiellement moins gagner. Mais dans mon briefing de départ, j’ai dit aux gars de rester unis et motivés pour aider nos pilotes dans la conquête du titre Constructeurs et rester fidèles à l’image du surnom de l’équipe, « l’Armée Rouge ».
