2013 MXGP THAILAND
Red Bull KTM Factory riders Tony Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings took control of the races at the first ever MX1 & MM2 GP of Thailand on Sunday leaving this exciting new venue with both red plates in their kits.
Successfully conquering the special new three-race format (MX1, MX2 and Super Final), the lead KTM factory riders have already thrown down the gauntlet to their opponents in only the second GP of the season. Cairoli led superbly from the front on both of his trips to this new track with a masterly display of riding skill and tactics on the KTM 350 SX-F that left riders on the bigger 450 cc bikes little chance to match him.
Herlings, the Dutch teenager who only arrived in Thailand on Friday morning followed up his convincing (by 40 seconds) win in the MX2 race with a fourth place behind MX2 riders Cairoli, Gautier Paulin and Clement Desalle in the hard-fought Super Final. This effectively put him in front of 17 other MX1 riders on the track. It also underlined his personal brand of tenacity and skill, as well as the quality of his KTM 250 SX-F factory bike. Herlings almost made a pass on third placed Clement Desalle in the closing lap of the Super Final but decided to back off and settle for fourth. He will now have to wait for the GPs in Mexico and Brazil for another attack on the bigger machines. In this new race format, being adopted this year only for the four races away from Europe, the top 20 MX1 and MX2 riders advance to contest the Super Final.
The other two KTM factory riders, Ken De Dycker and Jordi Tixier finished fifth and eighth in the MX1 and MX2 classes for valuable points in the championship. De Dycker had a great race in the MX1 outing, finishing second to Cairoli, but he found himself buried in the pack at the start of the Super Final. He did well to recover enough to finish tenth and overall fifth in his class. Tixier was racing with a vicious cut to his chin that required 14 stitches after a nasty crash on Saturday. He finished sixth in the MX2 race and was rated overall eighth in MX2.
The presence of the KTM brand is also being felt in the MX2 class this year with a slew of young riders like Romain Febvre of France, Glenn Coldenhoff of Netherlands and Jose Butron of Spain already delivering impressive results on the KTM 250 SX-F.
Following the GPs of Qatar and Thailand, the factory teams now return to Europe where action will resume on the Easter weekend in Valkenswaard, Netherlands, a track where Herlings and Cairoli are known to excel in its soft sand. Having already laid the foundation for a solid start to their seasons they and their KTM teammates will be looking to garner more points at this popular European race venue.
What the top KTM riders said after the races:
Tony Cairoli: “It was a good weekend for me and I was happy to take both races today. It was a difficult race for everyone because of the heat but you have to manage your energy and know your body, especially for the second motos when you start to get tired. The second race was better for me because the track wasn’t so bumpy and the best part of the weekend is that we got the red plates.”
Jeffrey Herlings: “I had two good starts and I showed after the first race that I am the man to beat this year in MX2. I almost got a podium in the Super Final and I hope that’s going to happen this year. I’ll be working towards that.”

MONSTER’S NEW MACHINE: THE SUPER 86
As the Toyota 86 continues its all-out assault on the automotive world, the latest name to jump into the fray is Pike’s Peak legend “Monster” Tajima. Monster Sport has been brewing up a rather wicked looking hillclimb 86 that you can see in the just-released teaser clip above. No specific info about the “Super 86″ build has been brought out yet, but more updates are promised on the Monster Sport website.
I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say I’m excited to find out what’s beneath that radical looking skin.

Donkervoort D8 GTO homologated across Europe
With 2.5-liter 5-cylinder turbo from Audi
Donkervoort Automobielen has announced the D8 GTO has received European Small Series Type Approval.
With production expected to commence in April or May, the D8 GTO will be available "throughout Europe and beyond", including EU member states, Russia, Switzerland and the Gulf States. This announcement comes after more than one year since the car was revealed. Deliveries will begin next year and already 25 "specially designed" units have been sold.
As a reminder, the Donkervoort D8 GTO is powered by an Audi 5-cylinder, 2.5-liter turbo engine producing up to 400 HP (294 kW) and 475 Nm (350 lb-ft). It enables the 1,653 lbs (750 kg) vehicle to complete the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in three seconds, on its way to a top speed of 158 mph (255 km/h).
Donkervoort was able to keep the curb weight low thanks to a carbon/aluminum/steel tubular hybrid chassis featuring carbon fiber/fiber glass body panels. The lightweight construction will allow the D8 GTO to have a fuel consumption of 10-12 liters / 100 km (24-28 mpg UK).

Michael Schumacher to test Honda Superbike at Valencia
After retiring againMichael Schumacherstill needs to quench his thirst for racing and has taken up karting again, but one of his favourite past times is still riding motorcycles and according to German websiteSpeedweek.de the former multi-Formula 1 champion is going to be involved in a three-day IDM-Dunlop test in Valencia, starting today.
In 2007, Schumacher tested the factory Ducati Desmosedici GP7 and in 2008 and then in 2008 went on to test Carlos Checa’s Ten Kate Honda CBR 1000RR Fireblade and also got a chance to test, what was then BMW’s new S 1000RR at Albacete in Spain and then rodeTroy Bayliss’ Ducati and Noriyuki Haga’s Yamaha and that same year also took part in the KTM Super Duke Trophy in Italy, the 8 hour endurance race at Oschersleben, and also took part in 3 German Superbike races as a wildcard as he was building up experience to compete officially in the 2009 German IDM Superbike Championship.
In 2009 while testing the Holzhauer Honda 1000 CBR Fireblade at Cartagena, the German Formula 1 driver had a huge crash that left him, it was revealed only months later, a serious injury to the seventh vertebra of the neck, a fracture of the first left rib and a fracture at the base of the skull, a hairline fracture on the left side of the skull and two main arteries to Schumacher’s brain was also damaged, which put a stop on his Superbike racing, but not a comeback to Formula 1.
Whether Schumacher’s test at Valencia is just a rich man’s continuing lust for speed and fun, or if the 44-year old driver/rider wants to compete in motorcycle races again remains to be seen.

15 Cool Tents for Chic Camping Vacations
Spending time in the great outdoors is one of our favorite things, if you couldn’t tell from the articles we’ve written on glamping, tents, and ultra-chic campers. A quick look around the web shows that we’re far from the only ones who’ve fallen in love with all aspects of camping, especially when it comes to tent design. The humble tent has gotten a designer upgrade and now comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and styles. Here are some of our favorites.
A perfect tent for bookworms.
Riddle us this: how many clowns fit into the big top tent?
A cheeky message for peeping toms.
This tent reminds us of the blanket forts we used to make when we were very young.
All of these above tents are the work of FieldCandy. Check out their website for even more cool, creative tent designs.
Here’s a classic: the iconic VW Camper Van as a tent. What’s not to love?
Recognize this beautiful camper? It’s Opera, the incredible camper-trailer we wrote about in 2011. This is hands down the most luxurious camper we’ve come across.
This chic igloo is another classic from our archives. BubbleTree, a French company, delivers and inflates these totally transparent igloos to the camping site of your choice. Learn more here.
Is a plastic igloo a little too flimsy for you? Check out I-gloobox designed byGeorgi Djongarski. This super sturdy tent is made of waterproof materials and has thick padding to keep you warm through even the harshest winter.
Not a winter person? Here’s a tent that will keep you cool in the heat of the Mojave Desert. Strawn.Sierralta is a mobile structure modeled on the Joshua Tree plant. It’s made out of recycled PVC pipes.
Meet the Cave Tent. The frame for this tent is made up of “air beams” that inflate in under a minute.
Tent design has been tending towards the eco-friendly in recent years. Orange’s Solar Concept Tent certainly fits the bill. It was designed with the Glastonbury Festival in mind, so it’s equipped with WiFi connectivity, photovoltaic fabric panels, and a light-up function should inebriated festival-goers forget how to get back to their tent (it happens!)
This isn’t a traditional tent, but a very chic gazebo/canopy by design firm Pircher. This one’s called “Fall in Love” and is meant to accomodate 2-people.
A sporty and portable reef tent designed specifically for surfers.
We’re not quite sure of the story behind these tents, but we love the design all the same. Leave a comment below if you’ve got the scoop! We hope you’ve enjoyed this short guide to cool tent design. If camping’s not your bag, don’t forget to check out our collection of modern vacation rentals and small hotels. We’re always open. MT
