The Glory Days of British Motorbikes N°1,2,3 et 4

But it wasn't all thrills and spills - the motorbike played a key role during World War II and it was army surplus bikes that introduced many to the joy and freedom of motorcycling in the 50s, a period now regarded as a golden age. With its obsession with speed and the rocker lifestyle, it attracted more than its fair share of social disapproval and conflict. Narrated by John Hannah.

Honda CB350 – City of Hate Vintage Motorcycles

OK, maybe we’re slow or something, but apparently African Honey Badgers don’t give a shit. Now we hadn’t heard this before. That’s not to say that they spend their days watching cable TV and smoking weed. Hell no. Besides, their lack of opposable thumbs would make using a cigarette lighter almost impossible. See, these Honey Badgers are apparently renown for being totally and utterly fearless when it comes to fights. Whether it be snakes, birds of prey or even a lion – they’ll take it on without batting an eyelid. Now just imagine the Honey Badger is actually a bike builder named ‘Isiah’ and his fight was getting this bike ready for the 8th Annual Rockers versus Mods show in Dallas…
    17_04_2014_honda_3b350_05
Here’s Mark Roberts, organiser of the Dallas Rockers vs. Mods show. “Much like the honey badger, Isiah Booth of City of Hate Vintage Cycles don’t give a shit. Like his bikes or not, his vision comes from an eclectic background restoring vintage Volkswagens and hammering together small-frame Vespas – and it is a remarkably concise vision. His bourbon-soaked, jovial manner and fart jokes belie the eye of an artist and the hand of a natural-born mechanic.
“His bourbon-soaked, jovial manner and fart jokes belie the eye of an artist”
From a haphazard shop that looks more like a barn find than a business he pulled together bits and bobs from numerous bikes to birth this, including forks from a CB500 and a front drum from an early CB77. The fact this bike was purpose-built to raffle off during the Dallas Rockers vs. Mods rally made for a build-on-a-budget. The money was so tight Isiah stitched the seat cover himself to save a dime.”
    17_04_2014_honda_3b350_02
“The engine was built from three hulks bought on the cheap; the tank came from a Rickman dirt bike that was languishing in the corner; Craigslist CL pipes were also utilized and everything else was fabricated, ground down to fit or created from scratch. The seat, for example, was first shaped out of foam and then laid over with fibreglass, allowing the front to match the tank perfectly, as well as frenching in the tail light. The forks and hubs Isiah personally cleaned, polished and relaced with stainless steel spokes.”

“The entire wiring harness was built from scratch to keep within budget. All of these decisions to expend extra labor to save money were made so he could focus the minuscule budget on powder coat and paint. Extreme Powder Coating hooked up the frame and wheels, Superior Body Works did the paint to Isiah’s exacting specifications, and vintage waterslides were created with the Rockers vs Mods logo in place of the Rickman moniker.”

“And Isiah’s vision resonated with the masses; Dallas’ Rockers vs. Mods sold so many raffle tickets they ran out. Yet Wally Manaugh was lucky enough to have his name scrawled on a blank scrap of paper and walked away with the bike. Well … he didn’t quite walk away with it – he was kind enough to allow City of Hate to take the bike to the City of Hippies (Austin) to have it featured in the invite-only Handbuilt Motorcycle Show put on by Revival Cycles and sponsored by COTA and Moto Guzzi during the second race of the MotoGP season.”
    17_04_2014_honda_3b350_07
Isiah also took the time to give credit where credit’s due. “I’s just like to say ‘thanks’ to all those who helped out with the RvM 8 Raffle bike. Namely Dat Mai, Michael Alton, Ashton Whitley, Mark Roberts, Matt Booth, Dana Morgan Booth, Justin Bowers, Derek at Xtreme Powdercaoting and Cruz at Superior Body Works. Your help was greatly appreciated.”

    JOHNNY ANGEL’S GARA AL CAFE

BMW R80 GARA AL CAFE 1
What is your dream job? A flippant question that seldom requires any thought to deliver an equally flippant answer. Me? A Motorcycle Racer. You? Probably the same. Or potentially a pro bike builder. Meet Johnny Angel, Ex Racer, new Pro Builder. In his 2 and a half year racing career Johnny achieved 64 podiums in 70 races, claiming top spot on the podium 37 times. If you were amongst the 40,000 spectators at Snetterton for the 2007 British Superbike meet you would have witnessed his greatest victory, 1st place in the Superstock class. Now he builds custom motorcycles. Legend.
BMW R80 GARA AL CAFE 2
When financial circumstances curtailed Johnny’s Racing career it was inevitable motorcycles would feature prominently in his next venture. He teamed up with his father who like him was a graphic designer by trade (any other skills Johnny?) to form Johnny Angel Customs. Here they present their third project, hot on the wheels of a pair or XS650 Bobbers, a BMW R80 named GARA AL CAFE.
BMW R80 GARA AL CAFE 3
GARA AL CAFE translates as “race to the cafe” and hints at Johnny’s racing pedigree which the pair aim to instil in their bikes. Based in the Kent village of Hawkhurst the duo set to work on redesigning and improving the venerable R80. The frame, wheels, and shaft drive were stripped and repainted and the existing good condition of the engine was refreshed with a service.

The rear frame was modified and delugged to accommodate the new seat unit that features a removable cowl that hides a pillion pad trimmed to match the white piped brown leather of the primary perch. Repositioned custom pillion pegs hint at the tail sections secrets. Dropped bars provide the cafe racer stance and are finished with classic low slung mirrors.
BMW R80 GARA AL CAFE 5
The new seat along with the tank, battery box, shortened mudguard, headlight mounts and clocks received the full benefits of the graphic design wing of the company, Angel Design & Print. Royal White was the chosen colour, combined with orange and gold flake graphics topped with a coat of lacquer. The white and orange livery and race number 4 recall the bike Johnny rode to victory at Snetterton that glorious day.

Here at the shed we love welcoming a new builder to the stable and wait eagerly to see the development of Johnny Angel Customs. The Ducati Monster concept displayed on their website www.johnnyangelcustoms.com shows that like in his racing career, Johnny is anxious to get to the front of the pack.

You just know if Johnny was riding, this is the only the view you would get of Gara al Cafe…

The Mustangs that never made it

    1966 Mach 1 Concept
Ford's legendary Mustang has remained faithful to the same basic layout for the past five decades. But along the way, Ford's designers have experimented with spin-off models to capitalise on the pony's popularity...
In the gallery above, you'll see the diverse scope of the Ford pensmiths – they experimented with four-door saloons, mid-engined coupés and chopped-roof speedsters. Early in the 'Stang's life, a shooting brake variant was even considered, and is the Classic Driver favourite from this would-be back-catalogue.

Many Ford Mustangs that did make it to production can be found for sale in the Classic Driver Market.
