    YAMAHA’S YARD BUILT












    SuperMoto : Thomas Chareyre (TM-Michelin) remporte le Grand-Prix d’Italie


    En s’imposant lors de la première manche et en terminant deuxième de la seconde, Thomas Chareyre (TM Racing Factory – Michelin) remporte le Grand-Prix d’Italie à Cremona, quatrième épreuve du Championnat du monde FIM SuperMoto.
    Auteur de la pole position, Thomas Chareyre conserve l’avantage au départ et mène la première course de bout en bout sans jamais être inquiété. Le Français rallie l’arrivée avec une avance de plus de sept secondes.
    Derrière, Ivan Lazzarini (L30 Racing – Honda),  qui évolue devant son public, et le champion du monde en titre, Mauno Hermunen  (SHR - TM – Michelin) s’échangent la deuxième place en début de la course mais l’Italien s’en empare définitivement au quatrième tour. Le Finlandais est alors bousculé par Adrien Chareyre (Aprilia Fast Wheels – Michelin) qui se hisse à la troisième position au cinquième tour. Quatre tours plus tard, Hermunen réussit à revenir sur le Français et à reprendre la troisième place.
    Adrien Chareyre termine quatrième devant Marc Reiner Schmidt (KTM) qui effectue ses premiers pas en championnat du monde cette saison.
    La seconde manche est nettement moins disputée. Mauno Hermunen signe le holeshot et ne va plus lâcher la tête jusqu’au drapeau à damier. Derrière, peu d’évolutions, les trois positions suivantes se sont figées dès le départ. Thomas Chareyre se classe deuxième devant son frère Adrien. Michelin signe son quatrième triplé de la saison. Yvan Lazzarini finit quatrième.
    Seule la cinquième place a donné lieu à un duel entre Marc Reiner Schmidt et Pavel Kejmar (833 Racing Team – Husqvarna) qui tourne à l’avantage du Tchèque.
    Au classement général, Thomas Chareyre accentue son avance de deux points sur Hermunen. Il compte désormais huit points supplémentaires. Ivan Lazzarini s’empare de la troisième place aux dépens d’Adrien Chareyre pour un point. Pavel Kejmar complète le Top 5 provisoire.

    A century of cycling

    Over two summer days, Saumur – a small historic town 100 kilometres south of Le Mans – is transformed into a ‘paradise of the boneshaker’ for the Anjou Vélo Vintage. Cyclists from across the Continent (and beyond) bring their vintage bicycles and matching outfits to celebrate a glorious epoch, in which the primary mode of transport had two wheels – and basketfuls of baguettes and champagne attached to each end. Much like London’s Tweed Run, men with artfully twirled moustaches and three-piece suits admire women with airy floral dresses as they gather with their 20th Century velocipedes, Penny Farthings and fashionable fixies.

    Four tours of varying lengths and difficulties cover the ancient province of Anjou’s most beautiful routes, with stops along the Loire to sample the products of the local vineyards (or take a nap in a meadow of flowers).

    Gasolina was founded by Todd Fell, who bought his first bike, A Harley 125, in 1952, and he still rides every day. He moved to Guanatajuato, Mexico, in 1996 to retire. He found a local boot maker to make him some cafe racer boots, and a business was born.
    Gasolina are sold in UK by premier custom builders The Foundry. They can be bought off the shelf, or made to order in a number of different colours and sizes, with literally hundreds of combinations.
    The Autobahn is a handsome hi-rise boot with a three strap configuration designed for comfort and adjustability. The tube of the boot is adjustable and can accommodate a broad calf.

    The boot has a thick exterior 1.8 – 2mm floater leather shell with a rough natural texture, and a soft ‘glove’ lining. The stitching is in black. The leather is vat dyed, so the leather absorbs the colour, resisting scuffs and wear.
    The Autobahn has a completely sewn Goodyear welt construction that means the soles can be repeatedly resoled. The boots come with genuine rubber sole that provide excellent grip.
    They can be worn over leathers or under leathers, and look great with jeans. They are a comfortable boot that can be worn both on and off the bike.

    Gasolina boots are manufactured in Guanajuato, Mexico in small batches with great attention to detail, with no assembly line. These are a high quality, robust but comfortable boot that are surprisingly inexpensive considering the quality.

    PRODUCT REVIEW – DAVIDA NINETY TWO HELMET COSMIC FLAKE STARS AND STRIPES

    After seeing the Cosmic Flake Stars & Stripes Complex Flake design on display at The Bike Shed III event, I took the plunge and ordered it in the Ninety Two shell.
    A lightweight open face helmet weighing just over 1100g, the Ninety Two is Davida’s smallest profile helmet, manufactured to the highest quality control required by British Safety Standard certification BS 6658: 1985 Type B. Made with a fiberglass composite shell reinforced with Kevlar, a polystyrene shock absorption liner with additional protection around the ears and a detachable leather lined interior trimmed with fabric, the Davida Ninety Two is a modern safety product which also combines traditional styling.

    The Ninety Two has been especially designed to be a close fitting helmet to give a quieter ride and prevent lift at speed. This fit is achieved by making the helmet width below the ears slightly narrower than at the temples. It feels tight to start with, but pulling the helmet as open as I can whilst putting on, and easing it into place, it provides a secure and comfortable fit. Removing the lid needs the same technique.
    The Ninety Two comes in three shell size and six helmet sizes XS 53-54, Small 54-56, Medium 56-58 Large 58-60, Xl 60-62 XXL 62-64 and is produced in all the styles as standard.
    The metal flake paint is deep, sparkly and vibrant, and sings in the sunlight. The design in unashamedly reminiscent of Easy Rider with a hint of Evel Knievel. I ordered mine without studs or stickers. The business for any Peter Fonda wannabes.

    Shanks start out as high quality gloves from a remaining nameless reputable manufacturer. At the MotoStuka workshop they undergo the “treatment”. “Shanked” and finished out with waxed thread, they’re then conditioned with a balm made of locally sourced natural materials. This age-old recipe waterproofs the leather and gives it a distressed rich copper finish. Every glove is unique in color and feel, but  “ALL get more beautiful with every mile!”.

    These are a great looking, back to basics glove, produced with care and attention by a biker every bit as eccentric as the bikes he rides.

    Oak Street shoes and boots are constructed from renowned Horween Chromexcel leather. Chromexcel undergoes 89 separate processes taking 28 days and utilizing all five floors of the Horween facility in Chicago. Over the past 100 years very little has changed in the formula. Food-grade beef tallow, cosmetic-grade beeswax, marine oil, chrome salts, tree bark extracts and naturally occurring pigments are combined. The mixture is then applied using heat, steam pressure, the hands of craftsman and time. This ultimately yields a soft, supple and durable leather.
    These are a great boot. They’re not armoured, so if you’re looking for a premium level of protection, these aren’t for you. But if your looking for a handsome, hardwearing and practical boot that serves other functions as well as riding your bike, then you’d be hard pushed to find better.     If you’re not interested in looking like a Marquez wannabe at the traffic lights on the South Circular, but want a pair of leather trousers to protect you in the unfortunate circumstance of an off, then Aero’s Heavy Front Quarter Horsehide jeans would be a wise option.

    You wouldn’t leave your bike out to rust taking a battering from the elements so why would you let your watch be subjected to the same punishment? After all, most watches tell a story, handed down through generations, adorned daily and to most people a trusty companion, it’s only fair that you show them the same treatment.
    The guys behind leading watch blog, Worn & Wound had the same thought and set to work designing a watch roll inspired by classic American outerwear and luggage, with rugged good looks and ease of use being paramount.

    James Bond inspiration – the ‘Goldfinger Aston’ for sale


    This car’s history is far more intriguing than ‘merely’ a car used in the filming of a James Bond movie. For this actual car, says Coys, was the real-life inspiration for Ian Fleming’s decision to swap 007’s Bentley for an Aston Martin, albeit a DB Mark III, in his seventh Bond novel, Goldfinger.

    Sifting through the evidence

    Here is the evidence: the Aston Martin DB 2/4 Mk I Vantage, chassis number LML-819, was delivered new on 4 July 1955 to the Honorable Sqdr. Ldr. Phillip Ingram Cunliffe-Lister DSO, best known for his heroic RAF service during WWII – as a Spitfire fighter pilot and the Commanding Office of a Mosquito Bomber Squadron. But it was Ingram Cunliffe-Lister’s father who had more of a James Bond persona. Coys tells us that he was Lord Swinton, the 1st Earl, a close confidant of Winston Churchill and head of MI5 and the Security Executive during WWII. 
    More to the point, he was Ian Fleming’s boss.

    Parked at the studios

    Fleming would have had plenty of opportunity to become acquainted with the car, as it was often parked at Hope Bay Studios in Kent, where the author – a nearby resident – located the HQ of Sir Hugo Drax in the Bond novel Moonraker. And in case you still doubt the car’s place in Bond history, the new Aston Martin was used by Ingram Cunliffe-Lister to compete in international rallies and hence it was fitted with such ‘extras’ as reinforced steel bumpers, concealed lockers, a heavy-duty anti-interference ignition system, driver’s seat connections for two-way radio (or a homing device) – and a Halda Speed Pilot… gadgets which appeared on Bond’s car in the Goldfinger novel. Though not in the film, of course, where he famously drove a DB5.

    Inspiration for the Goldfinger Aston Martin

    Even without this compelling history, a DB 2/4 Mk I Vantage is a glorious car to own but, with this example’s extensive history file highlighting the evidence that it was the inspiration for the Goldfinger Aston Martin, it is a unique object of desire.
    The 1954 Aston Martin DB2 in question will be auctioned in Coys' upcoming Blenheim Palace sale on 12 July 2014. It can currently be found in the Classic Driver Market.
