    MotoGP ; Márquez s’assure la pole pour la dixième manche à Indianapolis / Marquez rides to eighth pole of 2014 at Indy

    Marc Márquez entamera la seconde moitié du Championnat du Monde MotoGP™ 2014 en tête de la grille dimanche à Indianapolis après avoir battu Andrea Dovizioso et Jorge Lorenzo en qualifications.

    Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda) sera en pole position pour la huitième fois de la saison dimanche au Grand Prix Red Bull d’Indianapolis, dixième des dix-huit manches de la saison 2014. Le Champion du Monde en titre et vainqueur des neuf premiers GP de l’année a tourné en 1’31.619 pour décrocher la pole haut la main, avec deux bons dixièmes de seconde d’avance sur la concurrence.

    Sur les talons de l’Espagnol quand celui-ci bouclait son meilleur tour, Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) a su saisir son opportunité pour décrocher la seconde position, sa deuxième qualification en première ligne cette année, à 0.225s de la pole. L’Italien soufflait ainsi la seconde position à Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), battu de seulement 0.025s mais de retour sur une première ligne qu’il avait manquée lors des deux dernières manches précédant la trêve estivale, à Assen et au Sachsenring.

    A une demi-seconde de Márquez, Aleix Espargaró (NGM Forward Racing) s’est qualifié en quatrième position, devant Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) et son frère cadet Pol (Monster Yamaha Tech3).

    Ce dernier a devancé Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) de seulement 0.011s et relégué l’Italien à la septième place, en tête d’une troisième ligne que complèteront Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda), qui échouait à sept dixièmes de seconde de son coéquipier, et Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3). Le Britannique a fini sa séance sur une chute en highside et est lourdement retombé sur l’asphalte mais a fini par se relever pour quitter la piste. 
    Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda) sera quant à lui dixième sur la grille de départ, devant les deux pilotes issus de la Q1, Scott Redding (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) et Cal Crutchlow (Ducati).

    Après avoir subi un violent highside le matin, Álvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) a dû se contenter de la quatorzième place, derrière Yonny Hernández (Energy T.I. Pramac Racing) et devant le Texan Colin Edwards (NGM Forward Racing) ainsi que Leon Camier (Drive M7 Aspar), qui réalisait une performance de très bon augure pour sa mission de remplaçant de Nicky Hayden.
    Mike di Meglio (Avintia Blusens) a de son côté pris le dessus sur son coéquipier pour s'installer en dix-neuvième position, sa meilleure qualification de la saison.

    Marc Marquez took pole at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix from Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo, clinching the top spot on the grid at the modified IMS track with a best lap of 1’31.619.
    An eighth pole of the season for Marquez gives him a good chance of continuing his winning run as he seeks a tenth successive victory on Sunday.
    Dovizioso (Ducati Team) produced a good lap towards the end of Q2 to get within 0.225s of Marquez in second, whilst Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) was a quarter of a second off pole as he completed the front row.
    Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) impressed again in fourth, whilst Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) reached his usual target of a top five qualifying position. Aleix’s brother Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3) was provisionally on the front row but was eventually pushed back to sixth.
    Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing), Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) and Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3) will line up on row three, provided Smith is fit to ride after a big high side at Turn 2 in the final minutes of Q2.
    Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda MotoGP) heads the fourth row after topping FP3 earlier in the day. Whilst Scott Redding (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) and Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team) made it through from Q1 to qualify 11th and 12th respectively.
    Substitute rider Leon Camier did well as he rides in place of Nicky Hayden for the Drive M7 Aspar team, qualifying 16th from Q1.
    Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) qualified 14th after surviving a big high side earlier in proceedings in FP3, whilst Broc Parkes (Paul Bird Motorsport) walked away from a Q1 crash and will start 22nd on the grid.

    THE BFG BLAZER

    There are a few vehicles in the Dirt Sports Nation that have achieved iconic status, and without any doubt among them would be the racecar simply known as the BFG Blazer. In 1976 Chevrolet approached Parnelli Jones, wanting to build a state-of-the-art racecar with the hopes of dominating desert racing. Parnelli, fabricator Dick Russell and his designers employed what they had learned from Big Oly along with their extensive road racing experience to create the icon seen here. The second of two Blazers (the first was a shorter-wheelbase, single-seat version), it was radical for its time. Most of trucks of the era were built on production frames with full cabs and strengthened factory parts. The BFG Blazer was a complete departure from this formula, using a full tube-frame chassis, a fiberglass body and exotic one-off suspension components. And, just like Big Oly, a big and thoroughly bad-ass wing topped off the whole creation. Besides being an evolutionary step forward, the Blazer also played a huge role in propelling the careers of two names who were then somewhat unknown. While it might be hard to believe now, BFGoodrich at the time was a new entry into the market with an all-terrain radial tire. Most ran bias-ply tires and viewed the new radials from a new company with loads of skepticism. Frank Vessels was one of the first to run the new BFGoodrich All-Terrain rubber on his more conventional Ford F-100. The Blazer was the next step for both him and BFG, helping to turn both into household names across the Dirt Sports Nation. After being driven by both Vessels and Bob Gordon, the Blazer was purchased by Don Adams, who campaigned it until it was no longer competitive. Like many old racecars, it was put into a corner of a shop and forgotten. That was until long-time racer Cam Thieriot finally convinced Adams to sell it for another run down the Baja peninsula during this year’s NORRA Mexican 1000. To get the racer back to fighting shape, he sent it to Sean Hoglund of YT Motorsports, who went about rebuilding and restoring the almost 40-year-old truck. In homage to the truck’s long and important history, Cam decided to share driving duties with Frank Vessels’ son Kash. For Kash, climbing behind the wheel of the racecar that played such an important role in the life of his father was a unique experience. “The BFG Blazer has been in my memories since I was just a little guy. Every game room picture in my house is of the Blazer. I grew up seeing this Blazer in photos, but had actually never seen it in person until Cam Thieriot brought it back to life with the help of Sean and YT Motorsports,” shares Kash. Bringing it back to life was no easy process for Hoglund and YT Motorsports as the Blazer had seen lots of hard use. Thousands of hours were put in meticulously restoring and rebuilding it in an amazingly quick 60 days. “Sean and YT Motorsports’ exhaustive efforts were amazing,” shared Cam Thieriot. “My off-road racing family and I, and even the whole off-road community, owe him a huge amount of thanks for bringing back this icon.” Indeed, we do.
     BFG-Blazer-A-Arms
    At the time, and even well into the 1980s, the majority of trucks racing used strengthened versions of stock components for the suspension. Showing the forward thinking that went into the construction of the Blazer, Dick Russell and Parnelli Jones built their own independent front suspension. The unique A-arms were actually stamped out of metal with a die and then welded together. Summers Brothers hubs with knockoffs attach to the 11.75-inch rotors (the original design was replicated by Coleman) along with the rebuilt Lockheed four-piston calipers that have been on the Blazer since it was built. Gabriel shocks were originally used to control the eight inches of available wheel travel, but they were replaced by 2-inch diameter Bilstein 5125s for the NORRA Mexican 1000.
     BFG-Blazer-Front-Suspension
    Unique to the front suspension is the addition of a separate pivot that attaches to the torsion bar. With the truck sitting for over 30 years, taking apart the front supension, along with the rest of the truck, was a formidable challenge for Sean Hoglund and the YT Motorsports crew.

    With Parnelli Jones’ extensive road race experience, it is no surprise that the rear suspension originally built Dick Russell features an exotic six-link with a Jacobs Ladder. Similar to the suspension of many Sprint cars, the duo was able to massage it to get a whopping 10 inches of travel. The link heading to the rear of the car that many could easily mistake for an anti-roll bar actually attaches to a torsion bar that provides spring force for the car (the anti-roll bar can be seen mounting to the front of the axle). YT Motorsports, who skillfully rebuilt and restored the Blazer, reported that shock mounts were found almost everywhere, but eventually they settled on three Bilstein 5125 shocks per corner. Nestled beyond all the links and shocks is further exotica in the form of a Parnelli Jones live rear axle that more resembles something from a Sprint car.
     BFG-Blazer-Engine
    Just like many modern Trophy-Trucks, the engine of the Blazer is pushed way back into the cockpit for better weight distribution. Barely clearing the cowl is a K&N air filter sitting atop a 750 cfm Holley four-barrel carburetor. The combination sends mixed air and fuel to a Chevrolet 350 cubic-inch V8 that was built by Tony Oddo Jr. of T.O.E. Performance Products. Not wanting to deal with race fuel, the V8 runs on pump gas and still produces a healthy 430 horsepower. Straight pipes run from the original Cragar headers to produce a beautiful noise. Backing the engine is an Art Carr-built Turbo 400 three-speed automatic.
     BFG-Blazer-Corvette-Radiator
    Hidden behind the shroud is a Corvette radiator to keep the Chevy 350 V8 cool. Like almost everything on the Blazer, the power steering was unique. Built by Tommy Lee, it uses a inboard mounted box along with a steering dampner with an external reservoir.

    With the NORRA rally over, the interior of the Blazer was returned to its original state with no “modern” conveniences such as radios, Parker Pumpers or GPS units. The extensive aluminum work forming the dash and floors that was originally built by Dick Russell was repaired and refreshed by Jake Wreesman of Metallhaus. The desirable Superior Performance Products “The 500” steering was also in good enough shape to restore, while new Stewart Warner gauges and a freshened Art Carr shifter replaced the originals. MasterCraft Safety provided new seats and restraints that keep with the retro theme of the rebuilt Blazer. Other than the small windscreen that got some air off of Vessels, there is very little in terms of driver comfort.

    One of the most recognizable features of the BFG Blazer is its iconic wing. Beautifully crafted from aluminum, it was completely taken apart and rebuilt by YT Motorsports. It is adjustable and was originally powered by a hand crank before switching to hydraulics and finally converted to electric for its run down the peninsula during the NORRA Mexican 1000. While many might think of it as a gimmick, Frank Vessels reported that the big wing did actually work, pushing the rear of the truck down at higher speeds, and Kash confirmed the same experience when he drove it.

    Those with a keen eye can spot the three small housings in the wing for the lights hidden inside it. A lever in the cab raises the KC HiLiTES (originally Cibies) out of the wing and two more lights in the front clip provide plenty of illumination. The body is all original, with the one-piece sides and hood being repainted in the Vessels livery by Anaheim Hills Auto Body with stickers by Sign Pros. It might be hard to believe now, but at the time BFGoodrich was a relatively unknown name in the desert with a radically new radial all-terrain tire. With Frank Vessels and the Blazer playing a vital role in changing that, it is no surprise that the Blazer is still fitted with 33-inch BF Goodrich All Terrains on American Racing wheels.

    MOTO GUZZI V7 STONE BY VENIER CUSTOMS

    The Moto Guzzi V7 Stone is the stripped back version of the V7 model range, Guzzi’s answer to the retro Triumphs, Ducatis and Harley-Davidsons that are jointly leading the modern resurgence in nostalgic motorcycles.
    We’ve seen quite a few well thought out customs based on the V7 platform, that iconic Moto Guzzi V-Twin lends itself to a huge variety of custom motorcycle styles – perhaps none more so that the classic scrambler.
    The V7 Stone you see here was bought new in New York and sent straight to the new Venier Customs garage for a full rebuild. The new owner wanted it to be a capable dual sport that could comfortably seat two people on weekend adventures, he requested proper knobbly tires from Continental, a set of enduro handlebars and a much simplified dashboard.
    The team at Venier Customs set about hand-forming a bespoke aluminium fuel tank for the bike, coupled with a set of aluminium side covers and custom fenders. The stock headlight was discarded in favour of a smaller, more low-key unit that better fit the scrambler style of the finished bike.
    Even those who don’t personally like the scrambler-genre would be hard pressed to find anything to complain about on this build, the attention to detail is extraordinary and we’re already looking forward to seeing the next creation from the talented team at Venier Customs.

    ‘12 Triumph Thruxton – White Collar Bikes

    “Oh come on!” is not a quote from the builder of this custom masterpiece but my own as I gazed across the first images that appeared in my inbox and realised that like my latest build this too was done at home. But whereas I thought I was fairly clever for making a carbon fibre seat for my ride, Ram Ram has literally built this bike from scratch. We both started by searching eBay, but that is where the similarities end and I for one can only stand, applaud and tip my cap to a man who takes back yard builds to a whole new level.

    Hailing from Bandung, Indonesia Ram Ram Januar is the creator of White Collar Bikes, his spare time hobby that turns out some of the wildest rides in the Southern Hemisphere for himself and his friends. Searching for an engine to be the centrepiece of the build Ram Ram turned to everyone’s favourite cyber parts bin, eBay, and secured himself a 2012 Triumph Thruxton 865cc DOHC Twin. But using the factory tubular steel cradle frame was never going to satisfy Ram Ram, so he set about crafting his own from 50mm chunks of T7 aluminium. Following the theme is the aluminium 8mm subframe, rear shock supports and stunning single sided rear swingarm that utilises a Ducati 1098 eccentric hub.

    With such an incredible foundation there would be no corners cut from here on in and parts that can’t be made at home were sourced from such names as Ohlins and Brembo. Clamped by a set of his own handmade triple trees are a pair of Ohlins FG series USD front forks that work flawlessly with the now single Ohlins rear shock. Swinging from the bottom of the Ohlins and brings the whole show to a stop are Brembo mono blocks at the pointy end and a single Brembo in the rear. The levers too are from the Italian red B, while the clip-ons and grips are once again Ram Ram’s own design and build.

    Giving the Triumph heart a little extra zing are a set of, you guessed it, Ram Ram built velocity stacks and his own version of the best of British with the stunning pipes and mufflers that pay tribute to the Triumph’s of old. There’s also no shortage of detail work, the hidden throttle and clutch cables, the custom sprocket cover, the industrial looking billet headlight and the raw alloy foot pegs. Matching the sculpted aluminium look with the right wheels Ram Ram turned once again to Italy and picked up a set of Ducati Diavel hoops wrapped in Pirelli Diablo Rosso rubber.

    But as he tells it, Ram Ram is a man easily bored. So rather than make one tank and seat combo he wanted to be able to change them out at a moment’s notice. So the frame was modified to allow quick changes and then he fabricated, count them, three different tank covers and three seat sections. The tank can be changed between Red Carbon Kevlar, Blue Carbon Kevlar or Black Carbon depending on the look for the day. While the seat options are all beautifully crafted from timber with the latest sporting the Triumph logo and a scalpel tail design.

    So is it any wonder that when his friend Bhaskara walked into his garage mid build he told him this bike had to be his. And not only is Ram Ram an incredible craftsman but a hell of a guy as he agreed to finish the bike and sell it straight to his good mate. The Bhaskara Thruxton is now ripping up the streets of Bandung with Ram Ram in pursuit on one of his other custom creations. Now when work is done for the day and the exhaust notes fall quiet, he returns to his garage and I await the day when I can again stand and applaud a brother from the custom culture talking homemade bike building into a new realm.

    Bonhams’ 10 glorious Ferraris at Quail Lodge

    This will surely be the most astounding collection of cars that Bonhams has ever brought to market when, on 14 August in California, 10 Ferrari classics from the hallowed Maranello Rosso Collection go under the hammer: including a 250 GTO and a 1953 Ferrari 250 MM Berlinetta...
    For Bonhams, RM Auctions and Gooding, it is one of the most important dates of the year: Monterey week, part of the prestigious concours d'elegance in Pebble Beach on California’s west coast. Nowhere else will you see so many multi-million-dollar Ferrari classics in pristine condition, surrounded by buyers with the wealth to acquire them.
    Bonhams will be serving up a special feast to the well-heeled Ferrari community this year at its traditional Quail Lodge sale, when the varied classics on offer include 10 hugely desirable Ferraris from the Maranello Rosso Collection: an ensemble of Prancing Horses from the early 1950s to the early 1980s. As Bonhams co-chairman Robert Brooks commented, “At Bonhams, we’ve had the privilege to present our clients with some very special motor cars and collections, but this is without doubt our most astounding collection.”

    Ferrari 250 MM with Californian history

    In addition to the authentic Ferrari 250 GTO which, if sold, is expected to deliver a new auction record (we are talking $50 million or more), there is also this beautiful Ferrari 250 Mille Miglia Berlinetta on offer. Styled by Pinin Farina, this Ferrari is considered a predecessor of such major icons as the 250 Tour de France, the 250 GT Short Wheelbase and the 250 GTO. The car was delivered new to California in 1953, by Ferrari importer Luigi Chinetti, for its first owner – racing driver Bill Devin. In his first race, Devin promptly took third place with this powerful 3-litre V12 GT. He then handed it over to aspiring young driver Phil Hill, for the car’s second race – in which it swept to first place. Only in the 1980s did the Ferrari return to its homeland, to be owned by the Italian Count Vittorio Zanon di Valgiurata. It didn’t reside there long, however (though long enough to complete the Mille Miglia retrospective – twice), and by the late 1980s the Ferrari found itself in the custody of the Maranello Rosso Museum. Chassis number 0312 MM is expected to realise between 9 and 12 million U.S. dollars.
