    Hungarian Baja: Fortin - "A terrific result for Al Attiyah and Overdrive Racing".+ results


    Qatar’s Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah stormed through from second position to snatch a dramatic last stage victory for Overdrive Racing and the Toyota team in the "Hungarian Baja", round seven of the 2014 FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies, on Saturday.

    The Qatari and his French co-driver Matthieu Baumel earned the fastest time on the final special to take outright victory away from Russian Vladimir Vasilyev by the margin of 12:09 minutes. Argentina’s Orlando Terranova finished third, a further eight seconds behind the Russian, after incurring a 12-minute penalty near the end that cost him second place.

    The Polish Team Orlen driver Marek Dabrowski and navigator Jacek Czachor finished eighth overall at the helm of a second Overdrive Racing-run Toyota Hilux, but Adam Malysz and Rafal Marton were sidelined after a third stage accident in the third Overdrive car. Czech driver Miroslav Zapletal was fourth.

    "This was a terrific result for Nasser, Matthieu and Overdrive Racing and particularly pleasing for it to happen so late on," said Overdrive Racing’s team director Jean-Marc Fortin. "Nasser will also be with us at Baja Poland in a couple of weeks and the result keeps his hopes of winning the championship alive."

    After administration checks at the Varasi Sportcsarnak in the historic baroque town of Pápa in Veszprém county, action got underway on Friday evening with a 58.37 km selective section at Kemenes before refuelling, regrouping and the overnight halt.

    Al-Attiyah slotted into second position behind Terranova. His time of 37:26 mins was just 38 seconds adrift of the Argentine and left him well placed to challenge over the four selective sections on Saturday. Malysz held fourth position and Dabrowski was classified in seventh.

    Two revised selective sections of 54.56 km (Erdö) and 96.62 km (Lötér), repeated twice, were on the agenda for Saturday before the prize giving in Pápa. Terranova won the first of the day’s four stages and Al-Attiyah hit back on the second, but Malysz was forced out of the running 20 km from the end of the third stage when the Pole flipped his Team Orlen Toyota on a fast, open stretch of road.

    "It was a right turn but, when we tried to turn the corner, there was a pile of stones and it threw the car. We landed on the roof and then we turned over twice," said Malysz’s co-driver Rafal Marton. "We spent 20 minutes upside down until we were turned back on to the wheels. These was no sense in continuing."

    Terranova took a sizeable lead into the repeat of the two stages on Saturday afternoon, but Al-Attiyah was not to be prevented from taking a superb victory for the Overdrive Racing team. Championship leader Vladimir Vasilyev claimed second after Terranova’s late penalty and Dabrowski reached the finish in eighth place.

    Hungarian Baja: Nasser Al Attiyah overall winner after dramatic fight Saturday.

    At the end: Fireworks. The "Hungarian Baja" result in the cars was decided only at the last kilometers of the race. Dakar Rally winner Nasser Al-Attiyah was struggling with technical problems on the first two stages on Saturday (the first differential of the Toyota was broken), on the last two stages in the afternoon, however, pedal to the metal.

    He promised it and did it - he won the Baja with 04:04:34 hours of X-raid´s Vladimir Vasilyev / Konstantin Zhiltsov (+12:09 mins) and their team-mates Orlando Terranova / Bernardo Graue (+12:17).

    It is true that as a result, Al Attiyah and his navigator Matthieu Baumel were more in the air on the last stage than on the ground, co-driver Baumel later said, sometimes he closed his eyes and ducked his head because they went so fast. The top speed was 173 km/h, and knowing the military area is really something.

    "I pushed the gas as I could, almost flew," Nasser Al-Attiyah said. "We could not have gone faster, we put everything on one page. It was a hell that one minute or two at the finish, when we waited for Terranova to arrive to the finish line, after that the calculation wasn’t going easy as well. But in the end result has born: We won."

    The overall leader of the World Cup, Vladimir Vasilyev could also stand up to the second step of the podium. At the last stages he was no more risking, since they were still far in front and behind the rivals. „Of course we wanted to win, but in terms of the overall we gained valuable points, which we are very pleased about" said Vasilyev.

    The Mini’s factory driver Orlando Terranova, however, was not in despair, he even said the more the track was drying, the more he enjoyed the race. "I'm not disappointed... Nasser is the star, I'm just a newcomer compared to him. I has an exiting battle with him. Why could he pass us? At the last stage we fell asleep a little," said Terranova. By the time they got to the last checkpoint they had already lost twelve minutes, most likely because of helping their teammates.

    The best Hungarian duo was Imre Fodor / Márk Mesterházi, the Hungarian Champion title defender (Ford Ranger), who after the first round came in the fourth place in the absolute. Fodor had a big grin on his face, but he was reserved: "I dont want to celebrate early, the hens are counted at the night, do not want to rush anything."

    And how he was right at the very next stage he got a flat tyre, which costed him several minutes. Despite this, he remained the best among hungarians – he came sixth to the Finish podium. "I feel good about performance, we could work out our disadvantage because of the puncture. We are at a close level with the world’s best racers, which I'm very happy about," said Fodor at the finish.

    Immediately behind him came Antal Fekete, who currently leads the Hungarian championship’s overall points, and for who was very important the best possible position, because the Hungarian competition is a triple point multiplier.

    "I really enjoyed the race, it was such a huge challenge to compete with the best racers of the world. It was important that we brought the car in one piece to the parc fermé. The Hungarian championship was also important because of the triple multiplier. I'm happy with the result. It feels good to to stand on the second step of the podium, next to Al-Attiyah in our category. I will always preserve this picture," said the Hungarian.

    The competition ended late evening on Saturday with the Award Ceremony, next to the Sports Hall in Papa – with the flaming torches mentioned above.


    Dakar Rally 2015: Great Wall to copy Local Motors Rally Fighter for the Dakar?.

    "The Chinese are coming" we heard some years ago in the Dakar Rally. After the 'Landwind-flop' in 2006 (both cars had to retire very early), some other Chinese manufacturers like 'Chery' and 'Great Wall' tried to reach the finish-line of the Dakar Rally - mostly based on Nissan cars of European teams like Dessoude from France.

    Later Great Wall was the first team which re-started the 'Project Dakar' with an own team, fully factory-support from China and the all-new Great Wall Haval/Hoover rallycar (based on a X-raid BMW X3CC) - and became successful, especially with European drivers like Carlos Sousa from Portugal (had to retire in 2014) or Christian Lavielle from France (finished 8th in 2014).

    After the Dakar Rally 2014, Great Wall announced a new rally-car for 2015, with a new concept, new technology - and fully constructed in China (so no X-raid copy)... as a long-term project. For a long time we didn´t hear anything from China (only that Sousa retired from the Team) - now the Blog [ CARNEWSCHINA.COM] reported some interesting news. We cannot say if the news are trustable, because even the Blog - officially based in Beijing - is registered in Germany and eventually based in Holland. But the story sounds interesting, so let us call it 'rumors'.

    The Blog is not especially talking about the Dakar-project, but about a eventually new Great Wall car from China, which could be perfect for the Dakar. Especially after Peugeot announced their start with the new 'Buggy-Monster'.

    "Patent drawings showing a new concept car currently under development at Haval. The concept is expected to debut on the Guangzhou Auto Show in December. The vehicle appears to be a sporty two-door 4×4 rally car in pretty much the same fashion as the famous Local Motors Rally Fighter," the Blog reported - and released some first graphics, which definetely looks like the 'Rally Fighter', an US-based project of the Company [ LOCAL MOTORS ].

    The US-AOL-Blog [ AUTOBLOG.COM ] and [WORLDCARFANS.COM ], obviously from Finland, also got the story - and the main content is clear: China is again to copy a car from a western manufacturer...

    Autoblog.com wrote: "Believe it or not, a Chinese automaker has actually filed to patent this clone of the Rally Fighter, a high-riding off-road sports car made in Arizona. Though the form and proportions clearly ape those of the Local Motors vehicle, the detailing appears to be different enough to stand apart."

    For Worldcarfans.com the story is more or less clear: "Chinese automaker Haval is preparing a Local Motors Rally Fighter lookalike set to come out towards the end of 2014."

    Really? Well, it is not unusual that Chinese manufacturers are copying cars from famous or interesting international brands. But the 'Local Motors Rally Fighter'? The car looks great, but until now it hasn´t any big success... We will see what will happen at the Guangzhou Auto Show in December. Only rumors? Or only a nice marketing gag, installed by Local Motors itself? Whatever, we have a nice story - and you something to think about ;-)

    Honda SS Custom Motorcycle
    Some of you may remember EVE, it’s a custom motorcycle we featured a few months ago when the first renderings were released by the team at Bandit 9 motorcycles. It was planned that 9 EVEs would be built to customer specification, each would look remarkably similar but the engine size would vary from 90cc to 125cc.
    With pre-order pricing starting at $4,600 USD, it’s not surprising that the 9 EVEs sold out very quickly. Deliveries were made to the USA, Canada, Belgium, England, Malaysia, Abu Dhabi and the bikes home city of Saigon, Vietnam. The clients included CEOs, artists, directors and even royalty – although further details on that haven’t been forthcoming.
    As you can see from the images here, EVE is a captivating motorcycle with steam punk influences and a collection of very clean lines. It’s wonderful to see custom motorcycle garages expending time and effort on these smaller capacity bikes, personally I’m a huge fan of sub-500cc motorcycles and even though it may get me expelled from the cafe racer club – some of the most fun I’ve ever had on two wheels has been on Vespas, Honda Cubs and Lambrettas.
