Rally dos Sertões: Marc Coma wins SS01 in front of Rodrigues and Goncalves / in car ; Second victory of Overdrive´s Varela/Gugelmin in stage 01.

KTM´s Marc Coma made a solid start in his bid for victory in the Rally dos Sertoes in Brazil on Sunday when he finished fastest in the opening stage of this 2600 km event.

The Spanish rider completed the stage of 216 km, of which 155 km was timed special between Goiania in central Brazil traveling southeast to Caldas Novas in 01:55:28 hours. He finished with a narrow 1:22 minutes ahead of second placed Helder Rodrigues (Honda HRC) of Portugal. Honda-rider Paolo Goncalves, winner of the prologue, was third, two minutes off the leader´s time.

Sunday´s stage required a lot of concentration according to Coma: "It was only quite a short stage but we can say the terrain was quite tricky. You have to pay close attention because there are a lot of animals and fences and other obstacles and also we were flying all the time because there were many jumps. Every time you have to judge how and where to land. I am happy though that we found the good rhythm today," the Spaniard said.

Coma´s official KTM factory teammates were also well placed after the opening stage with Jordi Viladoms of Spain in fourth place 00:02:32 mins off the pace, Briton Sam Sunderland in sixth at 00:04:31 and Ruben Faria finishing seventh only two seconds behind Sunderland. The KTM factory riders compete on the KTM 450 Rally machine.

Coma entered the competition with a six-point lead in the FIM World Cross Countries Rally Championship on Joan Barreda and Goncalves is looking to consolidate that lead this week.

The three times Dakar Rally winner was second in the "Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge", the "Sealine Rally Qatar" and the "Sardegna Rally Race", which has more a characteristic of an enduro event than a classic rally. Factory riders did not compete in the scheduled Round 3 in Egypt (Pharaons Rally) due to the instability in the country at the time.

The 22nd edition of the Brazilian "Rally dos Sertões", the largest off-road competition in Brazil, started with a strong pace on Sunday (24th) in the 1st stage of the dispute between the towns of Goiânia and Caldas Novas.

There were 216 km in total and a special test with 155 km. Among the cars, at the category T1-FIA, the duo Reinaldo Varela and Gustavo Gugelmin (Overdrive Toyota Hilux) were the winners, with the time of 01:50:17 hours.

Cristian Baumgart and Beco Andreotti (NWM Ford Ranger), who had finished second, were punished with five minutes (by losing a waypoint during the displacement) and dropped to fourth overall. Guilherme Spinelli and Youssef Haddad (Mitsubishi ASX) and Marcos Baumgart and Kleber Cincea (NWM Ford Ranger) are in the second and third place, respectively.

"In Sunday's special test, even a kangaroo would want out, the car was kicking so much," said the winner Rainalo Valera. "But it was very good. It was possible to compare our performance with the other competitors. This is only the beginning and we have to be carefully all the time."

Among the 45 cars in the entry list, 44 started the special test this Sunday and four did not finish within the maximum time for the test. Besides the T1 FIA, cars are also disputed in the categories T1 Prototypes, Pró Brasil, Super Production, Production T2 and Production T2 / TR4.

In the Super Production category, the victory on the day was with the defending champions Glauber Fontoura and Minae Miyauti (Mitsubishi Ralliart Brasil). In Pro in Brazil, Mauro Guedes and Neurivan Calado (MS Rally) were the best. Sylvio de Barros Neto and Eduardo Bampi (Mitsubishi Ralliart Brasil) were the winners in the T1 Prototypes. And the duo Wagner Roncon and Joselito Melo Jr. (Dudu Rally Team) won in the Production T2.

Current champion in the truck category, Edu Piano and the co-drivers Solon Mendes and Antonio Carlos de Sales (Ford Racing F4000) were the fastest on the trucks, with the time 02:24:09 hours - even without working brakes.

The trio Kenner Garcia / Rafael Dal Bello / Raphael Bettoni (Ford F4000) were first runners-up with Felicio Tadeu Bragante / Ricardo de Paula Costa / Paco Corder (Ford F4000) in third, and six-time champion Guido Salvini and co-drivers Flavio Bisi and Fernando Chwaigert (Mercedes Atego) in fourth.

On Monday (25th), the competitors depart towards Catalão in the dispute of the 2nd stage of the Rally dos Sertões 2014. There will be 260.36 km in total on the second day (39.54 km of initial liaison, 202.23 km of special and 18.59 km of final liaison).

Between Goiânia and Belo Horizonte, Sertões will cross five more cities. Three will host the rally for the first time: Catalão, Paracatu and São Francisco. Caldas Novas and Diamantina complete the route.

Rallyraid: The new Schlesser customer racer - 4x4 Mercedes instead of buggy.

We proudly present: This is the Schlesser SP01 rallyraid car. Contrary to popular belief it is not a car wich will propel "Le Patron" Jean-Louis Schlesser to new carrier heights, it is the first prototype of more to be built for sale or rent.

The rallycar is intended for those who seek a relatively low cost solution yet capable of winning races on an international level benefitting from the technical know-how of several decades. Surprise: A Mercedes-powered 4x4 instead of a 2-wheel buggy.

The car was designed by Frank Papp and Jean Louis Schlesser, keeping in foreground the concept of simplicity coupled with reliability and speed. "We didnt want to reinvent the wheel... Thanks to the efforts of my great team, we just built a reliable fast car matched by an excellent quality in workmanship," Frank Papp reported.

To ensure on time availability and affordability, many components were developed in house like differentials, steering gear, hydraulic jack system etc. Power is provided by the latest version of the 3.0 liter Mercedes turbo diesel, however a petrol variant will also be available in future models. This is coupled to a 6-speed sequential Sadev gearbox and the whole driveline unit is situated low to the center of the vehicle.

On both sides of the gearbox sit the two sparewheels beneath the driver and navigator seats. 400 liters of fuel fit in a fuel safe tank, equally enough for diesel and petrol engines. Cooling of all the systems is provided by a rear mounted radiator, while the comfort of the racing duo is aided by an off road air conditioning unit.

On the suspension side: Equal length A-arms front/rear and identical uprights make parts logistics simple. The car has completed several tests in France, Italy and Hungary and ran flawlessly, now is eager to win some races. For more informations contact Albert Horn via Email [ahorn@xsport.us ].

    ALPINE-RENAULT A110

    Alpine_A110_Car_1
The Alpine-Renault A110 is remembered for two things, it’s beauty and its extraordinary rally abilities. The model had quite a long life for a sports car, it was introduced by the small French marque Alpine in 1961 and continued production until 1977 – it even saw parallel production lines running in both Mexico and Bulgaria at one point midway through its lifespan.
Alpine was acquired by Renault in 1973 but this was no great surprise, Alpine cars had always used a broad range of parts from the Renault catalogue and the two companies had always been closely aligned – in fact the only significant change to the A110 during this time was that its name went from being the ‘Alpine A110′ to being the ‘Alpine-Renault A110′.
A large part of the car’s success was down to its remarkably light weight, it tipped the scales at ~700kgs/1540lbs (depending on engine choice) which made it perfectly suited for the challenges of European rally stages. The more notable victories of the A110 include the 1971 Monte Carlo Rally, the top 3 positions in the Coupe des Alpes rally of 1969 and the World Rally Championship in 1971 and 1973.
    Alpine A110 Car 10 1480x986 Alpine Renault A110
The model you see here is powered by the popular 81bhp, 1289cc inline 4-cylinder Renault engine with a single Weber carburettor, this fed power to the rear wheel via a 5-speed manual transmission and stopping was achieved using the 4-wheel disc brakes.
Much has been written about the styling of the Alpine A110, there’s little argument that it’s a stunningly beautiful car – the only drawback is that the lightweight fibre glass bodies don’t tend to age well and require careful maintenance to stay in good condition. That said, at least body rust isn’t likely to be an issue.
The design was the work of Giovanni Michelotti, an Italian automobile designer that was perhaps more prolific than any other throughout the 20th century. Michelotti designed for Ferrari, Triumph, Lancia, Maserati, British Leyland, BMW, Scammell, DAF/Volvo, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Reliant, Hino and Matra. If you take a close look at his designs for Triumph – namely the Triumph Spitfire 4 Mark 2 and the Triumph GT6, you’ll see hints of their relation to the Alpine A110.
This particular A110 is being offered for sale by RM Auctions at their London Sale on the 8th of September 2014, its estimated hammer price is between £40,000 to £50,000 – making it a remarkably affordable entry into the Historic Monte Carlo Rally, for those so inclined.

    solid silver Jaguar D-Type sculpture

Collector Studio reveals a 1/5-scale silver D-Type sculpture as part of its line-up.
    Silver Jaguar D-Type Sculpture-02
If crankandpiston.com learned anything from its time on the 2014 Mille Miglia with Jaguar Heritage Racing, it’s that post-war classics Cat insight mob scenes in Brescia, that “Jag-wah, Jag-wah!” is a popular mating call in Siena, a sandwich and a cup of coffee in San Marino can alter the time-space continuum, and that most ’53 C-Types are frequently have AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson behind the wheel. We did not expect, however, that one of the coolest Jags currently roaming the planet would turn up in Canada, be made of solid silver, and would measure just 33 inches in length.
    Silver Jaguar D-Type Sculpture-03
As well as being a magnet for grubby fingerprints, this handsome beast currently resides with automotive memorabilia outfit Collector Studio, although its construction originally began in Stuttgart, Germany. Meticulously replicated moulds ofan actual D-Type were taken at first, into which 7.5kg of pure silver were poured. A tricky enough procedure in itself, the moulds were then shipped to a silversmith in Bristol, England (well, where else…) to be carefully sculpted together, yet more silver being used to seal and smooth over the joints. And we thought replicating six lightweight Jaguar E-Typeswas going to be difficult…
With the Black Walnut trestle attached and ‘Britannia Silver Standard 958’ hallmark affixed, the 95.84% silver 1/5 scaleJaguar began its life anew with a heavy regime of detailing and polishing.
    Silver Jaguar D-Type Sculpture-01
For those of you with your wallets already poised, there are two important points we should mention. Firstly, the silver D-Type sculpture is one of an extremely limited run, so you may need to be quite generous with the zeroes on your chequebook. Secondly, the price – TBC – is quoted as being ‘very expensive’. ‘D-Type in real life’ expensive.
Frankly, a ’53 D-Type with a Brian Johnson behind the wheel would be an easier find for your living room. “Jag-wah!”
