The Kalahari Discovery

SafariGard’s rolling product showcase—dubbed the Kalahari Edition Discovery II—was long the drool-worthy envy of Land Rover owners from all over. It disappeared some years back when SafariGard closed it’s doors, with rumors flying that it had been parted out and would never be seen intact again. One evening during last year’s Prescott Rally I was enjoying a few beers and swapping stories with Martti, the sort of stories those of us suffering “Disco Fever” know only too well. As we left the pub later that night there it was: parked right next to my Discovery was the Kalahari, alive and well. When I heard he was bringing it out again for this year’s rally I arranged to do a photoshoot and spend some time appreciating his nicely outfitted ride.

The Kalahari was already well prepared by SafariGard with lift kit, bumpers, winch, recovery points, rock sliders, skid plates, snorkel, and a custom roof rack. Since purchasing the truck, Martti’s performed a long list of upgrades and preventative maintenance including a 4.6L motor swap from a Range Rover and the all-important center diff lock:

Future planned upgrades include an improved cooling system, Perfect Switch dual battery control with self-jump feature, and Currie Antirock front sway bar with custom disconnects.

It’s nice to see the Kalahari Discovery in a good home, and I look forward to seeing it again out on the trail.

KEVILS SAPPHIRE

Demand is a tricky thing. I learn’t in economics class that one can plot such a thing on a rather boring looking graph, and that a man called Jean-Baptiste Say invented a law which stated; if Kevils Speed Shop keep building gorgeous bikes then people will queue up to buy them. Jean is dead, and French, but I think he was onto something.

Kev also offers two-wheeled tailoring to the stars of Hollywood. With a back up tank and tail, in NATO green, this bike with feature in the next Daniel Radcliffe, Morgan Freeman and Michael Cane film; Now You See Me II, in cinemas summer 2016.

The colour chosen for this build was from the modern BMW car range, a shade savoured for the sporty and range-topping M-series. Now, those of you with small people will know that any mention of the simple verb for water in a chilly, solid state has Santa’s elves running for cover, so Kev Hill (need we say, boss of Kevils?) ignored the Bavarian nitwit in the paint naming department and instead opted for Sapphire as the moniker for this build. Conjuring a more serene and opulent image.

The donor in this case was a 1984 R80, which received the customary and undignified Kevils strip-down. With a Beemer laid bare assessment can be made as to how deep the rebuild needs to go. But Kev doesn’t buy shitters so ordinarily a bounty of new parts puts most subjects back into action. Although this example was in good order, a full nut and bolt, ground-up restoration was carried out. Michael Cane and Morgan Freeman are far too old to be bump-starting recalcitrant old motorcycles and Daniel Radcliffe isn’t old enough to know what a carburettor is, so reliability on set was key.

The bike is Kevils signature style café racer fitted with parts straight from their own stock shelves. R&D over the last few years has resulted in more modern fabrication efficiencies, Jean-Baptiste would be very impressed. The stainless 2-into-1 low level stainless exhaust system with upswept stubby can, mudguards, seat unit and saddle are KSS items available to shed builders across the globe.

Mikuni carbs are a regular upgrade on custom R-series, a proven formula that delivers crisper throttle response and a releases spritely ponies from the Boxer motor, rather than the stubborn mules of the standard setup. Raask rear sets ensure the extra pep is enjoyed from a sportier position.

Drag bars are a no nonsense option, visually they are clean and a darn sight more comfortable that cramped clipons. A billet fluid reservoir with braided hose a slick interruption to the uncluttered cockpit. A Motogadget Motoscope Pro touch screen speedo sits neatly above the Halo LED headlight and matches the curves nicely.

The frame was powder coated metalic silver to give the matt blue a bit more pop, which works well the majority of the components being silver. Black Hagon shocks, barrels, heads and timing cover in coated with a textured black finish punctuate the light palette.

Yamaha XJR1300 Racer

The XJR1300 is back! Yamaha’s search for innovation has led to collaborations with the world’s most talented custom bike builders, including Deus Ex Machina who created the beautiful Eau Rouge and provided inspiration for the XJR1300 Racer.

The carbon cowling and front fender, racer tank and clip-on bars show off the air-cooled engine. The riding position is focused, with a narrower, more forward sportier feel. A shorter tail adds to the muscular silhouette with the narrower front tank.

Peugeot a dévoilé les couleurs des 2008 DKR/Michelin qui seront engagés sur le prochain Rallye Dakar (3-17 janvier). Par ailleurs, Overdrive et HallSpeed ont confirmé l’engagement de dix Toyota Hilux, dont un pour Yazeed Al-Rahji.

Après des milliers de kilomètres d’essais parcourus en couleur carbone, Peugeot a enfin dévoilé la livrée de ses trois 2008 DKR à moins de 50 jours du départ du Dakar 2015. Sans grande surprise, elles seront aux couleurs de Red Bull. Total et Michelin figurent également en bonne position. Pour le « confort » de l’équipage, le toit a été volontairement peint en blanc, une couleur qui conduit moins la chaleur que le noir par exemple.

Pour ce retour au Dakar, l’objectif de Peugeot est d’aller le plus loin possible avec un maximum d’humilité. Conforté dans ses choix techniques, le constructeur français fait preuve d’ambitions mais aussi de beaucoup d’humilité. Les trois autos n’embarqueront pas avec le reste du convoi fin novembre. Elles s’envoleront pour Buenos Aires mi-décembre après une ultime séance d’essais au Maroc avec Stéphane Perterhansel, Carlos Sainz et Cyril Despres.

La concurrence fourbit ses armes également. Côté Toyota, on annonce pas moins de 10 Hilux engagés par les structures Overdrive et HallSpeed, avec l’ancien vainqueur Giniel de Villiers en capitaine d’équipe. L’Argentin Lucio Alvarez, le Néerlandais Bernard Ten Brinke et le Français Christian Lavieille allient vitesse et expérience. Le Saoudien Yazeed Al-Rahji va disputer son premier Rallye Dakar.

Côté X-Raid, on parle de neuf Mini ALL4 Racing/Michelin avec le vainqueur sortant Nani Roma et l’ancien lauréat Nasser Al-Attiyah. Orlando Terranova ainsi que le Polonais Krzysztof Holowczyc feront partie de l’aventure. L’équipe allemande vient de remporter une nouvelle Coupe du monde des Rallyes Tout-Terrain FIA avec Vladimir Vasilyev et Konstantin Zhiltsov.

Le départ du Rallye Dakar 2015 sera donné le 3 janvier à Buenos Aires. Retour et arrivée dans la capitale argentine le 17 janvier.

Peugeot has unveiled the livery of the Michelin-equipped 2008 DKRs which will contest the 2015 Dakar (January 3-17). Meanwhile, Overdrive and HallSpeed have confirmed the entry of 10 Toyota Hiluxes, including a car for Yazeed Al-Rahji.

After covering thousands of testing kilometres with a carbon finish, and with 50 days remaining until the start of next year’s Dakar, the three 2008 DKRs have broken cover in their definitive colours. Unsurprisingly, they will feature the branding of Red Bull, while other partners Total and Michelin are also clearly visible. To optimise crew comfort, the roof has been painted white which absorbs less heat that black.

For its Dakar comeback, Peugeot’s humble target is to go the farthest distance possible, but that doesn’t mean the French carmaker doesn’t nurture higher ambitions for the event, especially as it is pleased with the technical choices it has made for its new challenger (2WD).

The three cars will not leave for South America by sea along with the rest of the hardware at the end of November. Instead, they will be flown out to Buenos Aires in the middle of December after one last test in Morocco with Stéphane Peterhansel, Carlos Sainz and Cyril Despres in attendance.

Its rivals have been busy preparing for the event, as well. Toyota, for example, has announced the participation of no fewer than 10 Hiluxes to be run by operations like Overdrive and HallSpeed, with former-winner Giniel de Villiers standing out as ‘team captain’. Argentina’s Lucio Alvarez, Dutchman Bernard Ten Brinke and Frenchman Christian Lavieille also combine speed with experience, while Saudi Arabian Yazeed Al-Rahji is contesting the rally for the first time.

X-Raid is talking of nine Michelin-equipped Mini ALL4 Racings for a line-up that includes Nani Roma, former winner Nasser Al-Attiyah, Orlando Terranova and Pole Krzysztof Holowczyc. The German squad recently claimed the FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup again in association with Vladimir Vasilyev and Konstantin Zhiltsov.

The 2015 Dakar is due to start in Buenos Aires on January 3 and finish back in the Argentine capital on January 17.

KEN BLOCK'S GYMKHANA SEVEN: WILD IN THE STREETS OF LOS ANGELES

SÉBASTIEN LOEB AVEC LA DS3 WRC AU RALLYE DU VAR !

Il y a quelques semaines, Sébastien Loeb avait annoncé sa participation au prochain Rallye du Var (27-30 Novembre) avec Séverine Loeb à ses côtés. Sa monture n’avait en revanche pas été confirmée…

C’est désormais le cas. Pour son premier rallye depuis le Rallye du Condroz 2013, le nonuple Champion du Monde retrouvera la DS3 WRC. La voiture sera directement exploitée par l’équipe Citroën Racing.

A bord de la DS3 WRC, Sébastien s’est imposé à 16 reprises avec Daniel Elena en mondial : 5 fois en 2011, 9 fois en 2012 et 2 fois en quatre apparitions en 2013. Il a également remporté les Rallye du Chablais et du Condroz avec Séverine l’an dernier. Ensemble, ils ont déjà gagné le Rallye du Var, en 2009, mais c’était alors avec la Citroën C4 WRC.

Volkswagen : 12 victoires en une saison !

Volkswagen a battu un nouveau record en WRC, celui du plus grand nombre de victoires en une saison, un record qui appartenait jusque-là à Citroën avec 11 succès en 2005 et 2008. Volkswagen a aussi égalé le record de 8 doublés détenu par Peugeot depuis 2002.

Sébastien Ogier et Julien Ingrassia ont offert à Volkswagen Motorsport un 12^e succès cette saison à l’issue du Wales Rally GB. Le précédent record était de 11, établi par Citroën en 2005 et en 2008. Jusqu’en 2005, c’est Lancia qui détenait ce record en WRC avec 10 victoires remportées en 1988. VW a aussi égalé le record de 8 doublés en une saison réalisés par Peugeot en 2002.

Avec cette 23^e victoire à l’occasion du Wales Rally GB 2014, Volkswagen n’est plus qu’à un petit succès de la marque allemande Audi et pourrait rejoindre Mitsubishi (34) en fin de saison prochaine. Depuis janvier 2013, la VW Polo R WRC/Michelin a gagné 22 rallyes sur les 26 qu’elle a disputés, et remporté 345 des 486 spéciales qu’elle a parcourues (197 sur 249 cette saison).

Côté pilote, Sébastien Ogier a remporté son 24^e succès mondial et égale le record de Tommi Mäkinen. En une seule saison, Seb Ogier a dépassé des pilotes comme Biasion, Mikkola, Alén, Auriol et Kankkunen. L’an prochain, il pourrait doubler Colin McRae (25), Carlos Sainz (26) et Marcus Grönholm (30) pour se positionner derrière Loeb (78).

Sébastien Ogier a aussi offert le 22^e titre Pilotes à Michelin depuis la création du championnat en 1979. Jari-Matti Latvala et Andreas Mikkelsen complètent le podium du championnat Pilotes 2014. C’est la première fois depuis 1987 et 1988 que trois pilotes d’une même marque monopolisent le podium du championnat.
