    Márquez remporte le Superprestigio DTX /Marquez ends 2014 with Superprestigio DTX win / Lorenzo triomphe en endurance à Abu Dhabi /Lorenzo triumphs in Abu Dhabi endurance event

    Marc Márquez a conclu l’année avec une superbe victoire au Superprestigio DTX samedi soir à Barcelone. Le Champion du Monde MotoGP™ s’est imposé devant Jared Mees, Champion en titre de l’AMA Grand National, et Kenny Noyes.

    Pas moins de dix Champions du Monde de différentes disciplines étaient réunis en piste samedi soir au Palau Sant Jordi de Barcelone pour la seconde édition du Superprestigio DTX, une compétition de dirt track qui s’est conclue sur une finale de 12 tours à laquelle participaient les meilleurs pilotes des catégories Superprestigio et Open.
    Dans le premier virage, le Français Thomas Chareyre et Márquez ont perdu du temps dans une collision avec d'autres pilotes tandis que Kenny Noyes, le vainqueur du FIM CEV Repsol Superbike, prenait l’avantage. L’Américain a néanmoins été battu par Márquez et Mees en fin de course mais montait sur le podium du Superprestigio pour la deuxième fois. 
    Gerald Bailo, Dani Ribalta, Oliver Brindley, Bradley Smith et Chareyre complétaient le Top 8 de la Superfinal. L’Américain Brad Baker, vainqueur de la première édition du Superprestigio et Champion de l’AMA Grand National 2013, avait été contraint au forfait après s’être luxé l’épaule gauche en tombant lors des essais libres. Esteve Rabat et Álex Márquez, les Champions du Monde Moto2™ et Moto3™, participaient aussi à l’évènement, tout comme Scott Redding ou encore Johann Zarco.

    Marc Marquez has ended a spectacular year in style by winning Saturday night’s Superprestigio DTX in Barcelona. The MotoGP™ World Champion came out on top following an entertaining battle with Jared Mees, the reigning AMA Grand National Champion, as Kenny Noyes completed the podium.
    A star-studded line-up consisted of no less than ten World Champions from various motorcycle disciplines around the world, with the competition being split up into the Superprestigio and Open categories as well as featuring talents of the future in the Junior tier. At the end of the night, eight top riders from across Superprestigio and Open went to battle in the 12-lap Superfinal, with proceedings taking place in Barcelona’s Palau Sant Jordi for the second time within the space of a year.
    Contact into the first corner saw France’s Thomas Chareyre taken down in a multiple-contact collision which also involved Marquez, as FIM CEV Repsol Superbike Champion Kenny Noyes took advantage to seize the lead. As the race neared its closing stages, the Barcelona-based American was overhauled by both Marquez and Mees who proceeded to go head-to-head. To the delight of the Catalan crowd, it was Marquez who came out on top around the 200-metre dirt track lap by just 0.298 seconds, with Mees and Noyes completing the top three; this marked Noyes' second consecutive rostrum result in the event, coming through a Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) round just as he had done in the January edition.
    The rest of the top eight was rounded out by Spaniards Gerald Bailo and Dani Ribalta plus Great Britain’s Oliver Brindley and Bradley Smith (Smith having won two of his earlier heats), while Chareyre recovered to eighth place. Last year’s winner Brad Baker (2013 AMA Grand National winner) was ruled out of action earlier in the day, having dislocated his left shoulder in a practice crash. The event also featured Moto2™ and Moto3™ title winners Tito Rabat and Alex Marquez, as well as Scott Redding who was making his debut in the Superprestigio.

    Jorge Lorenzo takes class win in Abu Dhabi

    Jorge Lorenzo pilotait une Ferrari 458 GT3 Challenge Evo samedi dernier à Abu Dhabi, sur le circuit de Yas Marina, pour une épreuve d’endurance de 12 heures. Le double Champion du Monde MotoGP™, qui portait son numéro 99 et les couleurs de Monster Energy, s’est imposé dans la catégorie ‘Gentleman’ avec le team Kessel Racing et ses équipiers Liam Talbot, Marco Zanuttini et Jacques Duyver.
    « C’était une expérience incroyable et nous avons même gagné dans notre catégorie, » a déclaré Lorenzo, qui a fini 18e au classement général. La première place a été prise par Michele Rugolo du team AF Corse, qui a bouclé 315 tours et évoluait aussi avec une 458 GT3.

    Driving a Ferrari 458 GT3 Challenge Evo, the double MotoGP™ World title winner demonstrated his four-wheel skills once again to come out on top in the ‘Gentleman’ category of the event. Carrying his 99 livery and with the backing of Monster, Lorenzo triumphed for Kessel Racing, accompanied by teammates Liam Talbot, Marco Zanuttini and Jacques Duyver.
    “It was an amazing experience and we even won in our category,” said the Spaniard rider, who finished 18th in the overall standings. The outright winner was Michele Rugolo, who completed 315 laps for the AF Corse team, also driving a Ferrari 458 GT3.

    Monster Energy: Ballistic BJ Baldwin Recoil 2 - Unleashed in Ensenada, Mexico

    ‘72 BMW R75/5 – Tattoo Custom Motorcycles

    We are happy to introduce a new writer at the ‘House of Burning Pipes’. Marlon Slack is our latest recruit and we’re happy to have him on board for the ride.
    Tattoo Custom Motorcycles have taken this 1972 R75/5 – a traditional, commuter-style bike – and turned it into a neat scrambler with a few particularly nice, subtle touches. There’s quite a few boxer engine custom bikes kicking around these days, but it wasn’t always the case. Eight years ago I sat in the café attached to Deus Ex Machina and between bites of breakfast and the occasional superior scowl I tried to throw at the Deus clientele, the side doors opened and a mechanic wheeled in a BMW R65, propping it up in a window display that overlooks the cafe. Behind me an older guy looked up at the motorcycle with a scowl. ‘Please,’ he groaned, ‘we’re trying to eat.’

    For years the BMW R-series with its suitcase-like engine and inoffensive styling was never considered a particularly suitable bike to customize. They were always a well-regarded motorcycle in their time – they were functional, reliable and had a strong following from men who had moustaches (before moustaches were cool) tweed blazers (before tweed blazers were cool) and names like ‘Donald’ (er…). But for the most part BMW boxers were considered pretty boring and quite ugly.

    In the last ten years things have changed. Old boxer twins are now highly sought after in the custom scene for their reliability and simplicity – as well as the huge amount of collective knowledge that has accumulated over the years from people like Don (RIP).

    Some of the changes made by Tattoo Moto are pretty clear at first glance. The rear subframe been chopped and raised and a single seat fitted. Mikuni carburettors replace the questionable stock Bing units, a Danmoto GP Extreme exhaust has been fitted and cone filters replace the standard airbox. Importantly, the beautiful slab-sided ‘toaster’ tank still wears its original emerald green finish.

    One thing that warms my heart when looking at this particular scrambler custom is that the suspension has actually been modified appropriately. It has 15” long Ohlins shocks at the rear and Racetech springs and emulators installed in the front forks. While it isn’t going to win any motocross races, these modifications, coupled with the capable Continental Twinduros means this scrambler would actually handle moderately well off-road.

    But some of the neatest things about the bike are a little more subtle – the workshop name on the side of the engine case, Brooks bicycle grips on Renthal bars and the use of Motogadgets M-lock wireless start system. Small things like these help set it well apart from many other BMW customs that are appearing at the moment, most of which are put together using little more than an angle grinder, a value pack of Plasti-dip and considerable amount of misplaced ambition.

    2003 Harley Sportster – Mandrill Garage


    China is a funny country in a not so funny way. While most countries generally think motorcycles are a viable way to cut traffic congestion and reduce pollution in cities, the Chinese are going the other way. They have started to ban motorcycles in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai (plus another 200 cities across the country). These strict laws by the government are having a huge impact on bike manufacturers like Harley-Davidson who thought the new found wealth of the Chinese would make it an easy market to increase their sales. How wrong they were. There are however a number of small custom shops who are defying logic and opening custom garages because it’s what they love doing. One of these is a freshly opened shop calledMandrill in Beijing. Mandrill is the love child of Lin and a few of his like minded friends, who are determined to keep the motorcycle culture alive and have a place that bike enthusiasts can hang out. Their first build is this compact Harley Sportster café racer which has been built over the last couple of years and given the name ‘Red-Eye Bitch’ because of the many late nights it took to build her in their spare time – they all still have day jobs to pay the bills.

    The story starts a couple of years ago when Lin found a 2003 Sportster frame and engine that was for sale by a friend. Being quite rare in China he decided to snap it up and then went about trying to find other parts to complete the build. Another Chinese law that doesn’t make it easy buying parts for an ‘older bike’ is that if a motorcycle has been on the road for longer than 11 years then it has to be scrapped.  Of course, you can buy collectable bikes, but you just can’t ride them on the streets.

    Lin started by ditching the stock tank and purchasing a curved whale tank from Benjie at BCR. Mandrill then went about fabricating that stunning custom exhaust which flows seamlessly from the front to the back.

    Mandrill made some modifications to the frame and made the proportions even more sporty. Lin also replaced the bulky stock battery with a much more subtle lithium battery. They also upgraded the bike with some custom rear sets and hand made oil tank. To finish the build off, Lin’s friend Tang painted the bike in green with racing stripe and number.

    The guys at Mandrill are so happy with the way this Harley turned out. We love their commitment building these bikes when they know they are fighting an uphill battle with a government hell bent on eradicating motorcycles. We are told that to buy a motorcycle licence (A-Licence) that lets you ride in the CBD now costs $15,000. That’s a lot more than most people spend on their bike. Would you ride a motorcycle if your licence cost more than your machine?

    This 1961 AJS 18 CS was equipped with a surfboard mount in preparation for Wheels & Waves 2014, and is now for sale via German dealer Premiummotorrad. According to the vendor, it’s in good condition and has been fully documented since 1976.
