JAGGED X RACING’S PRO PRODUCTION POLARIS RZR IS A JAGGED LITTLE THRILL

Photographers: Boyd Jaynes
In just a few short years, UTV racing has exploded both with Baja and in the Best in the Desert events. It’s the fastest growing segment and we’re not too surprised in that “cars” such as the Polaris RZR are fun to drive, fast and reliable.
There’s also a ton of parts to be found for them, especially in the suspension area, so taking them to the next level is relatively easy to do. Most of these suspension pieces bolt on and with the horsepower output of the stock RZR one can build a pretty competitive rig easily and relatively cheaply and go racing, or just have big fun with friends on the weekend.
Then there’s the cars like Brandon Schueler’s Jagged X Racing 2014 Polaris XP 1000. Built entirely at Jagged X Racing of Phoenix, AZ., this RZR has undergone extensive modifications to make it legal to run in the Pro Production UTV class for both SCORE and Best In The Desert racing series. The frame is constructed using the required structural components (i.e. the entire main center section) from original Polaris Chassis as per class rules. The stock cage is cut away and another one built by Jagged X using all Chromalloy tube and plate to their specifications.
Another rule is that the stock suspension mounting points remain, so the Jagged X front control arms are 2-inches longer and wider than the stock Polaris units and were designed in association with Cutting Edge Manufacturing in Phoenix using solid works CAD and precision laser cutting and forming. The front spindles are also a collaborative effort between Jagged X and Cutting Edge while stock RZR brakes are used. The front shocks are Walker Evans 2.5 custom Needle Valve single coil overs that have been equipped with Eibach springs.
The rear trailing arms are also Jagged X/Cutting Edge units, and again, it’s a combination of Walker Evans and Eibach for the shocks though these units are Walker Evans 2.5’s that use piggyback style reservoirs. In another effort to ensure reliability, Summers Brothers axles replace the stock units.
Wheels and tires are another area where parts availability has taken off for UTV’rs. The custom 15x6-inch OMF Performance beadlock wheels are downright trick as they feature three-piece billet centers and have inner stiffening rings. The tires are BF Goodrich KM 2 Mud Terrain (30x9.50x15) but we know that BFG now produces their Baja KR2 for UTV’s as well.
Jagged X figures that the Polaris Pro Star 1000 fuel injected OH cam parallel twin engine is fine (and reliable) as it is, so they only add a set of Muzzy Performance mufflers and a UMP air cleaner equipped with a Donaldson paper element. A Ron Davis aluminum radiator, mounted up high keeps things cool. Polaris says the engine produces 110 horses, which is nothing to sneeze at. Besides, the Jagged X team figures to make the best of them with their suspension mods.
Again, the rules state that certain factory body panels with required but the aluminum doors and roof are Jagged X units, as are the various other panels. The blue base paint was sprayed by CR Designs of Phoenix, while the vinyl graphics were applied at Wolf Designs in Queen Creek AZ.
Vision X Lighting is used as their 40-inch XPR LED light bar is placed above while a 12-inch XPR LED bar has been installed into the bumper. The required LED safety lights are placed into a box at the rear of the top and a small KC HiLites LED unit also faces to the rear.
Inside is all the pieces that one would expect from a racecar: Sparco Evo II seats with Simpson 3-inch, 5-point harnesses, a Joe’s aluminum steering wheel, a PCI Race Radios Elite intercom & Icom system and a huge Lowrance GPS unit. Many parts, such as the shifter and gauges are stock Polaris units, but the gauge sits in a custom aluminum dash that Jagged X fabricated. They also modified the stock wiring harness to cleanly include all of the many additional electrical pieces, such as the PCI Dual Air fresh air system.
This car is the 5th Generation of RZR that Jagged X Racing has built specifically for desert racing and all are built to compete at the highest level. They’ve succeeded as with Schueler as driver, he has 6 Best in the Desert Championships and over 20 wins since 2007 to show for it. Jagged X has had a car on the podium in every BITD Series Championship since the UTV class inception. They won the SCORE UTV championship in 2013 and was second in 2014. Jagged X driver Matt Parks also earned the Toyota milestone award in 2013 and 2014 for completing every mile in the SCORE series.
That means that Team Jagged X is also consistent, which is huge as the old saying “you can’t win if you don’t finish” should be rule one for every team. It shows that Jagged X knows how to build a RZR to make it both fast and to last.
We were able to get shots of this RZR HP 1000 as Schueler and the Jagged X team was prepping for the Baja 500. We realize that this months Masterpiece in Metal is completely different that any we have ever featured, but the UTV craze is one that we both acknowledge and applaud in that it’s bringing in fresh blood to our sport. And that’s enough for us to take notice.
We asked Polaris which of their factory backed teams we should be watching, and they said this one.
The Jagged X Racing A-arms were fabbed in conjunction with Cutting Edge Manufacturing, as were the hubs. A set of Walker Evan 2.5 piggyback reservoir coil over shocks provides a stable ride.
Progressively wound Eibach springs puts the spring in… the Walker Evans 2.5 coil over shocks.
The 15x6-inch OMF Performance wheels are trick, three-piece billet units that even have internal stiffeners. The BF Goodrich KM 2 Mud Terrain tires (30x9.50x15) may not be trick per se, but they do their job exceptionally well.
Taking stock and making it better is the theme of this Pro Production racer, and items such as Summer Brothers axles and Jagged X Racing suspension components are key to making it work.
Another collaboration between Jagged X and Cutting Edge are the trailing arms, which are made from Chromalloy plate and TIG welded for strength.
Proving that great things come in small, though wide, packages is the Jagged X Racing Pro Production RZR XP1000.
Jagged X custom fabricated the aluminum dash and then filled it with the basic race cockpit fare such as a huge Lowrance GPS unit, a PCI Race Radios Elite intercom & Icom system and the stock Polaris main gauge. A Joe’s aluminum steering wheel provides a good grip while adding as little weight as possible.
Desert races are long and grueling, so this RZR uses Sparco Evo II seats with Simpson 3-inch, 5-point harnesses to make the drive a little more comfortable.
The custom, Jagged X Racing-made aluminum dash houses both the stock Polaris gauge as well as various switches, lights and buttons.
Producing 110-horsepower, the 1000cc Polaris Pro Star fuel injected OH cam parallel twin engine is completely stock, and we don’t mean that in a bad way. Reliability means never having to say “we DNF’d.”
A UMP air cleaner canister utilizes a Donaldson paper element while the SPAL fan equipped Ron Davis radiator keeps the RZR cool.
Muzzy’s has long been known for producing performance mufflers and exhausts, and we’re sure that they get out all the horses that the 1000cc RZR can produce.
An ATL dry brake fuel inlet connects to the spec legal fuel cell.
If you’re going to have a scoop, you may as well have one with a little style.
Jagged X Racing has shown that it has the experience and talent to build a RZR that’s capable of winning championships.
