Ogier’s 30th world class victory makes him the second-most successful driver in WRC history, level with Marcus Grönholm. The record (78) is still with Sébastien Loeb, however. France has gone back ahead of Finland in terms of wins by nationality (175 vs 174).
Jari-Matti Latvala claimed his 50th WRC podium finish but still hasn’t managed to win two events in a row.
This year’s Rallye Deutschland was the fastest since 2002. Ogier won at an average speed of 104.1kph.
Thierry Neuville’s co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul started his 50th WRC event in Germany. His first was the 2007 Rallye Monte-Carlo in a Mitsubishi alongside Luc Dewinter.

A workshop in Trier on the subject of promoting the WRC was attended by all the championship’s organisers, plus a delegation from South Korea.
One of the two diesel-engined BMW 120s entered for the ADAC Rallye Deutschland crashed nastily on SS18 ‘Stein&Wein’. Alexander Herrmann and Olivier Steinmacher were taken to hospital.
Toyota has a habit of introducing new competition cars at Rallye Deutschland (Yaris R1, GT-86, etc.). This year, it revealed a ‘rally-prepared’ Toyota Mirai which served as VIP car. It runs on emissions-free hydrogen and its motor is accredited with an output of 150hp for a range equivalent to that of a petrol car.

Is this what would happen if Koenigsegg made a motorcycle?

Koenigsegg’s design team is known for its wild creations – but Russian one-man design consultancy Burov Art has gone one better, creating a concept motorcycle that incorporates the Swedish manufacturer’s signature design cues…

Contemporary, with a hint of classic

The stubby-tailed superbike is Burov’s interpretation of Koenigsegg’s design language, were it to be translated into two-wheeled form. However, despite the modern appearance of the cars that leave Koenigsegg’s airport-based factory in Ängelholm, Burov’s bike has thrown in some old-school references – no doubt inspired by the current popularity of café racers. Its traditional rear shocks are highlighted in a contrasting colour, and the headlight arrangement is a nod to the past. What’s more, although it’s a figment of one man’s imagination, you can guarantee there would be a rather potent engine encased in that ‘wrap-around’ fairing were it ever to become a reality.

    PORSCHE 944 ACROSS AFRICA

15,000 miles the hard way in a German sports car.
A metallic ping resonated from beneath the 23 year old Porsche as it made its way through the darkness. It wasn’t immediately clear as to what had created the cryptic sound and it took a few minutes for Ben to realize the extent of what had happened.

A year in the planning, it was now a mere seventeen days until Ben Coombs and Laura Reddin would set off for Africa in a Porsche 944. They decided it best to include a second car so Ben’s friend, Brummy, purchased a Mitsubishi Shogun 4×4 and was joined by Louise and Tom. The group would set out together for three months (Libby, another close friend would also join the the group for a stint).

Moments later surrounded by a torrent of steam and smoke, Ben grudgingly opened the hood breathing life into his fears. Under mysterious circumstances, the crankshaft pulley bolt worked itself free from its post and had rattled about the engine bay a bit before ultimately liberating itself from the automobile all together. By the time he heard the sharp ping of metal striking concrete it was already too late. What Ben didn’t know at the time was that the oil pump pulley lies behind the crankshaft pulley and relies on this very same bolt to stay engaged on the woodruff key. Without it, the pulley slides off of the keyway, the oil stops flowing, and within seconds the engine is reduced to beer can fodder. This would be the end for engine number one and a sign of things to come.

Unfortunately for Ben, that single loose bolt had set the theme for the entire “African Porsche” adventure where breakdowns would be commonplace and a long string of minor setbacks added to a long, disheartening list of challenges he would face.

Fortunately, he had the foresight to purchase a used, albeit rough around the edges, Porsche 944 to supply spare parts for the journey. This car would now supply the new heart for the severely wounded African Porsche. He had no way of knowing what condition the motor was in or if it would even start. With only seventeen days remaining until departure, he pressed on.

[Fun fact of the day: On the Porsche 944’s with the 2.5 liter engine, the oil journal on the crankshaft barely provides enough oiling to feed the bearings for the cylinder two connecting rod. By the time you realize the oil pressure is low, it’s already too late, the damage is done and the bearings are cooked. An experienced machine shop can modify the crankshaft to provide increased oil flow, but this requires an expensive rebuild.]

Despite the poor timing of such a catastrophic occurrence, and much to the surprise of his friends (and, even more so, himself) he was somehow able to coordinate the necessary help to accomplish the seemingly impossible task of resurrecting the Porsche in time. Sadly, instead of a sense of relief, Ben now found himself diffident. The engine failure had sewn the seeds of doubt planted by nearly every person he dared to share his idea with. He now had tangible reason to question the Porsche’s worthiness to cross the African Continent. Despite these reservations, he pressed on with the vehicle modifications.

In an effort to better absorb the rough roads that lie ahead, and to provide a spot more ground clearance, the suspension was swapped in favor of one with increased ride height -to this former Porsche mechanic, it appears to be the factory suspension that came on the U.S. spec model 944’s. Whether it was to pacify the USDOT’s bumper and headlight height restrictions at that time, or Porsche’s answer to our less than stellar road conditions, the exact reason Porsche produced a taller suspension for the U.S. escapes me at the moment. To avoid sleeping on the ground in unfamiliar areas, Ben also constructed a roof rack and sleeping platform to accept a ground tent that could be quickly deployed -an important feature since camping was planned for nearly every night of the trip. He and Laura would have to ease their way into the tent via the hood careful not to damage the windshield on the ascent. With vehicle prep complete, and Ben quietly stressing over the low probability of the Porsche completing the journey, the group set out for Cape Town.

His fear of failure continued as he and his travel companion, Laura Reddin loaded the car for the long haul. This was in no small part due to the glowing oil pressure light that remained illuminated from the time the donor motor first sprang into life. The warning light seemed to taunt Ben, constantly reminding him of what it was capable of. It’s as if the Porsche knew what lied ahead and boldly protested in bright red silence. The car’s sentiment was arguably justified.

Founded in 1931, Porsche has a long history of producing top notch sports cars. It wasn’t until the introduction of the Cayenne in 2002 that the words “Porsche” and “off road” were spoken in the same breath. No doubt, history buffs will be quick to point out the Porsche 959 rally car that won 1-2 in the 1986 Paris-Dakar; although a great feat of engineering at the time, it wasn’t exactly a road car. So what possessed Ben to take this near antique sports car 13,500 miles across Africa; a country known for having some of the most inept infrastructure on the planet?

Screen Shot 2015-06-01 at 10.09.31 AMScreen Shot 2015-06-01 at 10.08.46 AM

I can’t speak for Ben’s sanity or whether or not he was simply powerless against the mighty gravitational pull that many travelers experience toward the African continent, but what I can tell you is that he did it. He managed to traverse the 15,000 miles from London to Cape Town …in a Porsche. I don’t want to give too much away. You can find out more about the challenges he and his friends faced in his book, Survival of the Quickest: Across Africa. In a Porsche. You can also follow Ben’s latest undertaking to which he calls “Pub2Pub”, where he plans to visit the northernmost pub on the planet and subsequently bounce from pub to pub working his way down to the southernmost pub on the planet. His goal is to not only visit interesting pubs, but to do so in style.

Ben describes the intentions of Pub2Pub:

“…– the AfricanPorsche Expedition and V8Nam – were shaped primarily by the practicalities of touring the globe in a sports car, Pub2Pub will be different.  The all-important practicality will be fused with stylishness, making Pub2Pub the ultimate expression of just how debonair travel can be if you think outside the backpacking box.  Everything from the clothes we wear to the car we drive will be chosen as for its ability to bring a unique, classical elegance to the trip, making it different to any road trip that’s gone before.  Very different.  Basically….” ~Ben Coombs, Pub2Pub

    INGLORIOUS MOTORCYCLES CX500

Inglorious Motorcycles CX500 1 THUMBSelfish motorcycles definitely have their benefits. Café racers look great with a hand rolled seat hump, flat trackers slide across the dirt better without ballast and wheelies are far less daunting when there’s only one pair of butt cheeks in line for a skin graft. But sometimes going for a ride with your other half on the back can be just as rewarding. As long as they aren’t one of those grippy, fidgety types.
Last year Sam from Inglorious Motorcycles in Essex had completed a CB400 Superdream and after a photo shoot, seehere, he lent the bike to a surf & lifestyle shop, Coast in Poole. Where upon it caught the eye of guy on the lookout for a new ride, he called Sam and the two met, next to said CB and chatted over multiple coffees about a potential sale. The deal breaker was the guy’s girlfriend, she wanted to join the fun and ride pillion, so the CB with it’s selfish solo seat was left in the shop window. Sam left with a smaller fistful of dollars than he’d anticipated but even better, a handshake and ideas for a fresh commission build.
Inglorious Motorcycles CX500 2For two-up riding a bit more welly was required but Sam was under instruction to source a donor that suited the favoured Comstar wheels, a CB750 would have been the obvious choice but there was no getting away from the customer’s desire for a twin cylinder sound track so the tried, tested and much modified CX500 was to be Sam’s canvas. With them being in plentiful supply a Plastic Maggot in good condition arrived at the Inglorious MC’s Essex HQ a few days later.
Inglorious Motorcycles CX500 3Being a 1980 vintage this CX had suffered from the over zealous manufacturing efficiency drive that had plagued motorcycle manufacturing with heavy, rough castings and pressed steel frames with a dizzying array of tabs. Best thing to do with these is chop ’em off and weld in a new one, so that’s what Sam did. Saddles are somewhat of a speciality for Sam, he prefers to use proper cow rather than the fake stuff. The thick, ribbed leather cover is hand dyed to a mahogany tone and stretched over a custom base, let’s hope the chap’s missus appreciates her bit.
Inglorious Motorcycles CX500 4Rather than trying to bury a tiny battery somewhere and suffer from a lack of cranking amps, Sam fabricated a box to house a decent sized battery and associated electrickery. A matching brown leather strap stops any electrons escaping.
Inglorious Motorcycles CX500 5The engine, transmission and Comstars were treated to a coat of the black stuff after a meticulous rebuild, with a few choice components lightly polished for contrast. The customer had initially wanted an all black tank, and who can blame him, CXs look great with a matt or gloss paint scheme. Greg from Black Shuck Kustom up in Norwich requested a degree of artistic licence and added his trademark stipple effect, diagonally across the front half of the tank. An Inglorious logo in brass was discreetly incorporated before laying down multiple coats of clear.
Inglorious Motorcycles CX500 6The final job was to set the clipons in position, complete with matching grips, and await the customer’s arrival for the big unveil.
    Inglorious Motorcycles CX500 7
Sam told us “Overall I’m really pleased with how the build turned out, the bike has changed enough to make it stand out, but not so to forget its original form. That V-twin really sounds superb with its lightly baffled exhausts, and even though it’s on hot rod tyres, handles pretty sweet too. The customer whose name I won’t reveal was over the moon with it, remarked that he didn’t expect it too look that good, I’ll take that as a compliment”.

Snapshot, 1962: The Kennedys in shades at the America’s Cup

At the 1962 America’s Cup, an Australian yacht, ‘Gretel’, was entered for the first time. Looking on from their own yacht are President Kennedy and his wife – and most notable are the First Lady’s sensational 60s sunglasses…
For an East Coast president from a first-class family such as John F. Kennedy, sailing is de rigueur. So, it’s hardly surprising that the presidential couple are among the spectators at the 1962 America’s Cup, watching the grand regatta with great interest. Earlier that week, John F. had given a legendary speech at a gala dinner, in which he had highlighted the relationship between humans and the ocean, and welcomed the first challenger from the Southern Hemisphere to the race. Today is a more casual affair, however: JFK wears a navy blue sweater with the obligatory American Optical Saratogas, while Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy is dressed entirely in white, from the sandals to the sun protection. Ultimately, Gretel was beaten by Weatherly from the renowned New York Yacht Club.
