Dakar : (Etape 9): Price (KTM) confirme, Sainz nouveau leader chez les autos / biker Price (KTM) safe in front as Sainz inherits Cars lead for Peugeot

The shortened ninth stage of the 2016 Dakar saw Toby Price (KTM/Michelin) and Carlos Sainz (Peugeot/Michelin) post the best times on two and four wheels respectively. The Australian enjoys a strong lead in the provisional Bikes classification following mechanical trouble for Goncalves. The Spaniard now tops the Cars order after team-mate Stéphane Peterhansel’s bad day.
Like Monday’s stage, today’s competitive loop around the northern Argentina city of Belen – including a visit to the notorious Fiambala dunes – placed the emphasis on slick navigation, while extreme heat added to the difficulty.
It notably turned out to be an ordeal for the bikers for whom the test formed the first part of another marathon stage. A high number of two-wheel competitors effectively found themselves in trouble and the organisers decided to truncate the originally-planned 285km stage at Passage Control 2.
Unfazed by the challenge, Toby Price – who was one of the riders to complete the full distance – did his utmost to strengthen his grip at the top of the provisional Bikes standings for KTM/Michelin. His mission was facilitated when his closest rival Paulo Goncalves, who started in overnight second place, had to park his Honda at PC2 after losing a big chunk of time with a radiator issue.
Honda’s Kevin Benavides and Price’s KTM team-mate Stefan Svitko were accredited with the second and third fastest times, more than seven and 10 minutes short of the Australian. The consistent Slovakian is now up to second spot, albeit 24m47s adrift of Price, while Benavides (+33m5s) is provisionally fourth behind Chilean Pablo Quintanilla (+32m14s).
On four-wheels, the predominantly off-road run initially produced a different pecking order to the pattern seen during Week 1 as Dakar rookie Mikko Hirvonen appeared briefly in front before settling for third place (+17s). Fellow Mini driver Rosegaar Van Loon (2nd, +10s), Toyota’s Giniel De Villiers (4th, +38s) and last year’s winner Nasser Al-Attiyah (5th, 2m4s) also seemed to have the edge over the Peugeot stars.
However, they were all ultimately overhauled by Spain’s Carlos Sainz, outright winner of the 2010 Dakar. The Spaniard has even inherited a relatively comfortable lead in the Cars standings since team-mate Peterhansel was delayed by a variety of problems today but is still second overall (+7m10s).
This evening’s gap of only 7m35s to the Frenchman will certainly have awakened third-placed Al-Attiyah’s hopes of gaining a position over the 1,570 competitive kilometres that remain before Saturday’s finish in Rosario, Argentina. The last four stages consequently promise to be pretty nerve-racking for the front-running crews.
The damage suffered by Sébastien Loeb’s Peugeot 2008 DKR on Monday was repaired overnight after the Frenchman dropped to eighth place (+1h5m16s) following a roll near the end of Stage 8.
Even so, the multiple world rally champion was reported to be in difficulty once more today, losing more than hour again to fall further down the provisional order.
