Defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) dominated the first official test session ahead of the 2016 MotoGP World Championship at Sepang, Malaysia. He was the only rider to lap in less than two minutes. Privateers Danilo Petrucci (Octo Pramac Yakhnich) and Hector Barbera (Avintia Racing) were second and third.
After topping the first day’s order with a lap of 2m0.684s, Lorenzo pushed the point home by posting a 1m59.580s at the end of the third and last session today (Wednesday). He was the only rider to squeeze beneath the two-minute mark.
“The times speak for themselves,” he said. “We posted some good laps with our new electronics package on the hard-compound tyres. I’m very pleased with the work that Michelin has done. Enormous progress has been achieved and we are close to the feeling we had last year. I felt comfortable and quick on all three days and we should be even stronger in two weeks’ time at Phillip Island [Australia] where we plan to do race simulation work.”
Pramac’s surprising Petrucci (+0.515s) was second fastest for the privately-run Ducati team and actually topped Tuesday’s timesheet.
Hector Barberá (2m0.387s) was third, again thanks to his time on Tuesday.
Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) was fourth (2m0.556s), almost a second short of his team-mate, but was upbeat after the session. “I’m happy with how the three days went. We tried a lot of things which will help us improve for the next test. We’ve still got plenty to do but Michelin’s engineers have worked well, especially on the front tyre. I tried several other types of tyre which have all progressed, too.”
Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda, 2m0.843s) and Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda, 2m0.899s) rounded out the week’s top six, chased by Scott Redding (Octo Pramac Yakhnich, 2m1.049s), Andrea Iannone (Ducati, 2m1.052s), Casey Stoner (Ducati, 2m1.070s) and Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3, 2m1.107s).
Eleventh-placed Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda, 2m1.161s) had a troubled few days but improved on Wednesday, while Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Maverick Viñales (2m1.244s) and Aleix Espargaro (2m1.623s) were 12th and 13th, ahead of Yonny Hernandez (Aspar MotoGP Team, 2m1.644s), Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati, 2m1.675s), Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3, 2m1.870s), rookie Tito Rabat (Estrella Galicia 0,0, 2m2.328s) and Stefan Bradl (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini, 2m2.372s)
Loris Baz (Avintia Racing, 3m2.541s) survived a nasty fall on the second  day and Michelin decided to withdraw the soft version of its rear tyre as a safety precaution. The damaged cover was sent back to the French firm’s headquarters for detailed analysis.
The riders will reconvene in a fortnight’s time at Phillip Island for the second of the pre-season tests.
