Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin) a remporté son troisième Rallye de Suède et sa seconde victoire consécutive cette saison. Le Néo-Zélandais Hayden Paddon (Hyundai/Michelin) et le Norvégien Mads Ostberg (Ford/Michelin) complètent le podium. Seconde victoire consécutive cette année pour le Gallois Elfyn Evans (Ford Fiesta R5/Michelin) devant les deux pilotes officiels Skoda/Michelin Pontus Tidemand et Esapekka Lappi.
Le Rallye de Suède 2016 a été marqué par des conditions météo particulièrement clémentes dans le Värmland et le Finnskogen en Norvège qui ont contraint les organisateurs à annuler plus d’un quart du parcours et à re-surfacer les spéciales après les reconnaissances.
Leurs efforts ont été récompensés car, avec le retour des températures négatives pendant le week-end, ce rallye a finalement pu avoir lieu et a offert un beau spectacle.
Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin) a rapidement pris les choses en main en remportant les trois premières spéciales, alors que deux des candidats à la victoire, Jari-Matti Latvala (VW/Michelin) et Thierry Neuville (Hyundai/Michelin) avaient déjà perdu tout espoir sur des ennuis de transmission. Puis Andreas Mikkelsen (VW/Michelin) a effectué une petite touchette, et Kris Meeke (Citroën/Michelin) a cassé une suspension sur une pierre.
Le Français comptait donc déjà une belle avance à l’issue de la première journée. Mais le lendemain, handicapé par sa première position sur des pistes recouvertes de neige fraîche, Sébastien Ogier a dû attaquer fort pour contenir les assauts d’Hayden Paddon (Hyundai/Michelin) qui évoluait en 7e position. Le pilote Volkswagen/Michelin a pris une option définitive sur la victoire dans le second passage de Vargasen et remporte sa 3e victoire en Suède, sa 34e en Mondial, assortie des 3 points de bonus.
Derrière, Hayden Paddon a sans doute été l’homme du Rallye de Suède 2016. Pour sa 3e participation, il a remporté deux spéciales et est parvenu à s’extirper d’un groupe de cinq pilotes en bagarre pour les places d’honneur vendredi soir. Rapide et régulier, Mads Ostberg (Ford/Michelin) termine pour la 5e fois sur le podium pour sa 10e participation à ce rallye.
Andreas Mikkelsen (4e, VW/Michelin) a commis deux petites fautes de pilotage, et Ott Tanak (5e, Ford) complètent le top-five. Ils devancent l’Espagnol Dani Sordo (Hyundai/Michelin) retardé d’une minute samedi matin. Henning Solberg (Ford/Michelin) a conclu son rallye à la 7e place devant l’Irlandais Craig Breen (Citroën/Michelin).
Après une brillante victoire à Monaco, le Gallois Elfyn Evans a de nouveau imposé la Ford Fiesta R5 Evo/Michelin au Rallye de Suède, dominant tous les pilotes nordiques, et en particulier les représentants officiels de Skoda/Michelin, Pontus Tidemand (2e) et Esapekka Lappi (3e) qui a privé Anders Grondal du podium dans l’ultime spéciale.
Rally Sweden was won for the third time by Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin) who remains unbeaten this season. He was joined on the podium by New Zealand’s Hayden Paddon (2nd, Hyundai/Michelin) and Norwegian Mads Ostberg (3rd, Ford/Michelin). Elfyn Evans (Ford Fiesta R5/Michelin) collected his second WRC2 victory of the season, ahead of Skoda/Michelin’s Pontus Tidemand and Esapekka Lappi.
This year’s Rally Sweden was marked by untimely mild weather in the Värmland and Norway’s Finnskogen regions. The conditions compelled the organisers to cancel more than 25 percent of the originally-planned competitive distance and they had to regrade the stage surfaces after recce.
Their efforts were rewarded when the temperature fell below zero degrees for the weekend and spectators were finally treated to an entertaining show.
Ogier (VW/Michelin) lost no time taking control by winning the first three stages while rivals Jari-Matti Latvala (VW/Michelin) and Thierry Neuville (Hyundai/Michelin) fell back with transmission woes. Andreas Mikkelsen (VW/Michelin) lost time with an ‘off’ and Kris Meeke (Citroën/Michelin) suffered suspension failure after hitting a rock.
Ogier’s handsome overnight lead after Day 1 came under threat the next morning when he was forced to run first on the road in fresh snow. He had to push hard to ward off pressure from Paddon who was seventh into the stages. However, the Volkswagen/Michelin star took a decisive step towards his third Rally Sweden victory, and his 34th world class win in total, by posting a strong time on Saturday’s ‘Vargasen 2’. He also pocked the three Power Stage bonus points on Sunday.
It was Paddon who perhaps produced the performance of the rally, though. The Hyundai driver won two stages on Saturday to distance himself from the pack of five drivers who had been battling for podium honours on Friday. The speed and consistency Ostberg (Ford/Michelin) paid off once more as the Norwegian finished in the top three for the fifth time in 10 attempts at this rally.
Mikkelsen was fourth for VW/Michelin) despite two costly errors and Ott Tanak (Ford) rounded out the top five. Dani Sordo (Hyundai/Michelin) was sixth after being delayed by a minute on Saturday morning, while Henning Solberg (Ford/Michelin) was seventh, chased by Craig Breen (Citroën/Michelin).
After his assertive WRC2 success in Monaco, Evans steered his Ford Fiesta R5 Evo/Michelin to another class win in Sweden. He finished clear of Skoda/Michelin’s Nordic experts Pontus Tidemand (2nd) and Esapekka Lappi (3rd) who squeezed past Anders Grondal on the very last stage.
