The Circuit of Ireland Rally, round two of the 2016 FIA European Rally Championship, promises to provide a thrilling scrap between the ERC’s front-runners and local experts like Craig Breen in a DS3 R5 entered in association with Michelin.
This year’s Circuit of Ireland, which will see a clash between the cream of the European, British, Irish and Northern Ireland rally championships, originally included no fewer than 34 R5 entries (21 Fiestas!).
There is one important non-starter in the class, however, since Russia’s Alexey Lukyanuk has withdrawn following a big crash while testing early this week.
The main challengers are likely to be Craig Breen (DS3 R5/Michelin) and Welshman Elfyn Evans (Ford Fiesta/DMack), with the defending ERC champion Kajetan Kajetanowicz (Ford/Pirelli) waiting to pick up the pieces.
The list continues with the likes of Keith Cronin (DS3 R5), Alastair Fisher (Fiesta R5), Tom Cave (Fiesta R5), Robert Consani (DS3 R5), Frederik Ahlin (Fiesta R5) and David Bogie (Fabia R5).
Like the 2016 ERC’s opener in the Canary Islands, the Belfast-based event is an all-asphalt affair, although here the stages tend to be fast, bumpy and narrow, with numerous blind crests and the omnipresent possibility of rain…
Michelin runners will be able to choose from the R11 (soft), R21 (medium) and R31/32 (hard) versions of the Pilot Sport for groups of up to four stages at a time. The total competitive distance is 209,56km divided into 14 tests, the longest of which is SS3 (‘The Glen’, 31.21km) which visits impressive scenery along the Irish Sea coast.
The main service park for the 85th Circuit of Ireland Rally is at Belfast’s King’s Hall and the event will start after the Qualifying Stage on Thursday, April 7. The rally will end on Saturday evening at Queens University.
