WRC, Portugal : Les Hyundai/Michelin en forme / Hyundai/Michelin in good form

The first European gravel round of the 2016 FIA World Rally Championship started with this morning’s shakedown which saw Thierry Neuville claim the best time, ahead of Hyundai/Michelin team-mate Dani Sordo. The Rally de Portugal gets under way later today with a start ceremony in Guimarães and a super-special in Lousada.
The 4.61km shakedown stage for the 2016 Rally de Portugal was located around 40km north of Matosinhos, so most crews completed several passes without returning to the service park.
The test was the same as 2015 and took the form of a bulldozed trail through a pine-tree forest which concluded with several tight corners round a local rallycross track. It offered little interest for the crews, but the many spectators who turned out to watch enjoyed the show.
Ott Tanak (Ford) showed the potential of his new tyres by posting the fastest time at first attempt, before improving by two seconds next time through.
He was soon passed by Hyundai/Michelin’s Neuville and Sordo, however. The Belgian posted a 3m11.3s (exactly the same as last year’s winning effort), while his Spanish team-mate ended up three-tenths adrift, chased by Tanak (3m11.7s) and Kris Meeke (3m11.9s) who is back after a three-month absence from the WRC.
The best-placed Volkswagen/Michelin drivers were Latvala and Mikkelsen who came fifth and sixth, on the same second as Neuville. Hayden Paddon (Hyundai/Michelin) beat Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin) by 0.2s, while Stéphane Lefebvre (Citroën/Michelin) and Kevin Abbring (Hyundai/Michelin) rounded out the top 10, ahead of M-Sport factory pair Mads Ostberg and Eric Camilli.
Pontus Tidemand (Skoda/Michelin) set the benchmark time in WRC2 (3m16.9s), two seconds clear of Teemu Suninen (Skoda/Michelin).
The 50th Rally de Portugal begins with a send-off ceremony in Guimarães, home of the Portuguese nation, followed by a dirt/asphalt super-special at the rallycross circuit in Lousada.
