DOMINANT L'ANTICHAMBRE DU WRC AU NESTE RALLY FINLAND, ESAPEKKA LAPPI A OBTENU SON PREMIER SUCCÈS EN WRC 2 CETTE SAISON.
Leader de la première à la dernière spéciale au fil des quatre journées disputées dans les forêts, Esapekka Lappi devançait Teemu Suninen dans un doublé finlandais. Les deux Skoda Fabia R5 étaient séparées de 41.7s à l'arrivée.
Lappi posait les fondations de son triomphe dès la première journée complète dont il remportait neuf des onze spéciales avant de contrôler les deux derniers jours.

Vainqueur des deux manches précédentes en Italie et en Pologne, Suninen devait gérer dimanche la pression de Pontus Tidemand, l'équipier de Lappi chez Skoda Motorsport. Séparés de seulement 3.8s avant la dernière spéciale, le Suédois partait à la faute dès les premiers kilomètres.
Ses malheurs permettaient à Elfyn Evans de prendre le troisième rang. Le leader du classement général s'était rapidement hissé en deuxième position avant qu'un problème de direction assistée sur sa Ford Fiesta R5 le fasse rétrograder en sixième place. Remontant progressiment, il conservait ainsi la tête du WRC 2 pour deux points face à Suninen.
Bien placé pour finir quatrième, l'Estonien Karl Kruuda abandonnait dans la Power Stage après avoir heurté une botte de foin et ainsi endommagé le radiateur de sa Fiesta R5. Celle d'Henning Solberg héritait de sa position en dépit d'un souci similaire à celui d'Elfyn Evans le dimanche. Quentin Gilbert se classait cinquième au volant de sa DS 3, suivi par Marius Aasen.
Pierre Louis-Loubet n'avait pas pris le départ de la dernière étape après une sortie samedi tandis que Hiroki Arai, pilote de développement Toyota Gazoo, menait sa Fiesta R5 à l'abandon après un accident pour sa première en WRC.

He led Teemu Suninen to a Finnish 1-2 having led from start to finish of the four-day forest road event. His winning margin was 41.7sec, both drivers at the wheel of Skoda Fabia R5 cars.
Lappi laid the foundations for victory in Friday’s first full day of competition. He won all but two of the 11 speed tests and measured his pace through the final two days.
Suninen, winner of the previous two rounds in Italy and Poland, came under intense pressure from Lappi’s Skoda Motorsport team-mate, Pontus Tidemand, during the final leg. They started the final stage separated by just 3.8sec but the Swede rolled early in the test.
His demise promoted Elfyn Evans into third. The series leader ran second for much of the early part of the rally before a power steering problem in his Ford Fiesta R5 relegated him to sixth. He steadily regained ground and kept his championship lead by two points from Suninen.
Karl Kruuda was on course for fourth but the Estonian retired in the final stage, hitting a hay bale and damaging his Fiesta's radiator. Henning Solberg inherited the position in a Fiesta R5, despite power steering issues today. Quentin Gilbert finished fifth in Citroën’s DS 3 with Marius Aasen completing the top six.
Pierre Louis-Loubet did not restart this morning after going off the road yesterday while Toyota Gazoo development driver Hiroki Arai retired after crashing his Fiesta R5 on his WRC debut.
