ERC : Le championnat démarre aux Canaries / action to begin in the Canary Islands

Following Rally Latvia’s postponement until September, the 2016 FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) will finally kick off with Spain’s Rally Islas-Canarias where Mads Ostberg (Ford Fiesta R5/Michelin) will be looking to build on his third place in Mexico last weekend.
The 2016 ERC will get under way in the sunshine of Gran Canaria, the golden beaches of which have attracted Mads Ostberg back for the Rally Islas-Canarias after he discovered the island during a holiday in Las Palmas last year.
The M-Sport driver, who is second in the provisional WRC standings after back-to-back podium finishes, travelled directly to Gran Canaria from Leon to take on the ERC’s cream in a Ford Fiesta R5 equipped with customer Michelin tyres, namely the Pilot Sport R11, R21 and R32 which took the top prize at January’s Rallye Monte-Carlo.
Although asphalt isn’t the Norwegian’s favourite type of surface, and despite the fact that the event is new to him, he should still give the reigning ERC champ Kajetan Kajetanowicz (Ford Fiesta R5) and Russia’s Alexey Lukyanuk (Ford Fiesta R5) a good run for their money.
The 16-strong R5 entry also features Las Palmas driver Luis Monzon (DS3 R5/Michelin), a two-time Spanish champion and three-time winner of his home rally. Other top challengers are likely to be Robert Consani (Peugeot 208 T16) and Federico Della Casa (DS3 R5).
The 13 asphalt stages range from 14 to 25km in length and call for a near-circuit driving style. The surface is quite abrasive and the possibility of unstable weather could make tyre choice complex.
Thursday morning’s Qualifying Stage will be followed by the first stage on Friday morning. The rally ends on Saturday afternoon in Las Palmas (Plaza de Canarias).
