Alexey Lukyanuk has secured victory in the Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés, starting the 2016 FIA European Rally Championship season how he ended 2015.
After taking the lead on SS9 earlier on Saturday, Lukyanuk carried a 32.3s lead into the final stage, SS13 Valleseco 2, where he beat Kajetanowicz to the best time by 0.4s.
“It’s incredible to be honest,” said Lukyanuk, winning a second straight ERC event after his Valais victory. “The competition was so hard. We did a lot of mistakes yesterday and this helped us today. It is super and I am really proud for my team and my sponsors.”
Kajetanowicz added: “It was unlucky but we are really happy, it was a good rally for us. OK we had a problem in the morning and of course we like to win like always, but we can’t win always. Congratulations to Alexey because it was clever driving.”
Local hero Luis Monzón has finished on the podium, repeating his result from the ERC’s last visit to his home islands in 2013. Fellow Spaniard Jonathan Pérez was fourth while Robert Consani takes fifth after struggling with brake problems throughout.
Wojciech Chuchała has won ERC2 for Subaru Poland Rally Team. While he’s dominated his class, he had just 1.1s in hand over compatriot Jarosław Kołtun in sixth overall going into the final stage, but Kołtun was 18 seconds slower in the end after having to stop to replace a tyre.
Péter Ranga snatched second place in ERC2 on the final stage, after Giacomo Scattolon had held the place since the start of the rally.
Łukasz Habaj has taken victory in ERC3 in his Rallytechnology Peugeot 208 VTi R2 after leading the class throughout. Click here for live results.
