Kris Meeke (Citroën/Michelin) est en route vers sa seconde victoire en Championnat du monde des Rallyes FIA. Avant la dernière étape du Rallye du Portugal, le Britannique compte plus de quarante secondes d’avance sur les VW/Michelin d’Ogier et de Mikkelsen.
Leader avec 31s9 d’avance sur Ogier (VW/Michelin) hier soir, Kris Meeke (Citroën/Michelin) avait doublé son avance à l’issue de la première boucle du jour après avoir remporté les trois spéciales matinales. Le Britannique, qui bénéficie de piste balayées depuis le départ, comptait 1min02s9 à la pause-déjeuner de Matosihnos.
Le pilote Citroën/Michelin a ensuite contrôlé les VW Polo R WRC/Michelin d’Ogier et de Mikkelsen qui s’entredéchiraient pour les accessits. Le Norvégien a remporté deux spéciales d’affilée pour revenir à 3s1 de son équipier Sébastien Ogier qui a attendu la pluie toute la journée ! Elle a fini par arriver, quand il terminait la dernière spéciale. Il devrait pleuvoir demain, mais Sébastien n’ouvrira plus la route...
Sur le podium provisoire hier soir, Dani Sordo (Hyundai/Michelin) a perdu le rythme aujourd’hui et pointe à la 4e place. Son équipier Thierry Neuville a dû se retirer en raison d’une panne d’essence dans l’ES11.
Eric Camilli (5e, Ford/Michelin) a vécu une nouvelle bonne journée - un 3e meilleur temps dans l’ES10 – contrairement à son équipier Mads Ostberg (7e) qui a concédé beaucoup de temps ce matin (différentiel cassé). Retardé par sa direction assistée hier, Jari-Matti Latvala (VW/Michelin) est remonté à la 6e place.
En WRC-2, Pontus Tidemand (Skoda/Michelin) avait brièvement perdu les commandes dans l’ES14, avant de récupérer la première place à l’issue de l’étape. Le Suédois compte 32s d’avance sur le Péruvien Nicolas Fuchs (Skoda/Michelin). Elfyn Evans (Ford/Michelin) avait repris la 2e place avant de sortir de la route dans l’ES12.
Chez les Juniors, Martin Koci (Citroën/Michelin) est leader devant Simone Tempestini et Terry Folb.
Kris Meeke (Citroën/Michelin) seems to have done enough to earn the second FIA World Rally Championship victory of his career. With one day remaining, the Ulsterman has a cushion of around 40 seconds over VW/Michelin’s Ogier and Mikkelsen.
Meeke began the day by doubling his overnight lead over Ogier (VW/Michelin) to complete this morning’s stages a minute clear of the world champion thanks to three stage victories and helped by the fact that he has benefited from swept stages since the start.
This afternoon, the Citroën/Michelin driver concentrated on managing from in front, leaving VW’s Ogier and Mikkelsen to battle for second spot. The Norwegian won two stages to close to within 3.1s of his French team-mate who has spent the day hoping for rain. It started to fall just as he was completing Saturday’s final test. The forecasters say it will rain again on Sunday, but Ogier will no longer be first on the road.
Dani Sordo (Hyundai/Michelin) has lost his footing on the podium but is still fourth, while Belgian team-mate Thierry Neuville was side-lined when he ran out of fuel on SS11.
Eric Camilli (5th) had another good day which included the third-best time on SS10. In contrast, his Ford/Michelin team-mate Mads Ostberg (7th) conceded a big chunk of time this morning with a differential problem. Jari-Matti Latvala (VW/Michelin) has bounced back to sixth after being betrayed by his power steering on Friday.
In WRC2, Pontus Tidemand (Skoda/Michelin) briefly relinquished the lead on SS14 but managed to recover top spot by the end of Leg 2. The Swede is now 32s clear of Peru’s Nicolas Fuchs (Skoda/Michelin). Elfyn Evans (Ford/Michelin) appeared in second place during the day before a crash on SS12.
The Junior leader is Martin Koci (Citroën/Michelin), chased by Simone Tempestini and Terry Folb.
