La deuxième manche du Championnat du monde d’Endurance FIA 2016 a été remportée par l’Audi/Michelin N°8 de Di Grassi/Duval/Jarvis, vainqueur avec deux tours d’avance sur la Porsche N°2. Tous les ténors ont connu des ennuis mécaniques, sans parler de quelques collisions. Nouveau succès de Ferrari/Michelin en LM GTE Pro.
Si les 6 Heures de Spa-Francorchamps sont souvent perçues comme une simple séance d’essais avant les 24 Heures du Mans, cette course fut bien plus que cela cette année.
Tout d’abord, qui aurait pu prédire une météo aussi clémente sur les Ardennes belges ce week-end où, d’ordinaire, le temps est si capricieux. La température de piste a grimpé aux alentours de 50°C, ce qui a forcé les teams à modifier leurs stratégies.
Cette course a été marquée par une cascade d’incidents parmi les top-prototypes. Porsche et Toyota ont longtemps mené l’épreuve, mais la Porsche N°1 (porte-moyeu) et la Toyota N°5 (moteur) ont perdu les commandes. La victoire est finalement revenue à l’Audi R18 e-tron quattro/Michelin N°8 de Di Grassi/Duval/Jarvis, tandis que Brendon Hartley (Porsche N°1) a signé le meilleur tour en course (1min58s431), à 0s459 de son meilleur chrono en 2015.
A sept semaines des 24 Heures du Mans (18-19 juin), les teams LM P1 ont le temps d’identifier les avaries techniques dont ils ont souffert ce week-end et y remédier pour cette épreuve quatre fois plus longue que les 6 Heures de Spa !
La course fut plus limpide en LM GTE Pro, du moins pour Ferrari/Michelin. L’écurie AF Corse avait placé ses deux 488 GTE en première ligne et la N°71 a remporté sa seconde victoire d’affilée. Un nouveau doublé Ferrari était en vue mais la N°51 a connu une casse moteur à moins de dix minutes de l’arrivée !
Journée mitigée aussi pour Ford. La N°67 a terminé à la 2e place devant l’Aston Martin N°97, mais Stefan Mücke est violemment sorti de la piste sur la N°66 à une heure de l’arrivée.
Victoire de l’Aston Martin N°98 (Dalla Lana/Lamy/Lauda) en LM GTE Am devant la Ferrari 458 N°83. L’Alpine A460-Nissan N°36 s’est imposée en catégorie LM P2 après un dernier dépassement brillant. Les quatre premiers se tiennent en moins de six secondes après six heures de course.
Les concurrents du FIA WEC vont désormais retrouver les autres teams invités aux 24 Heures du Mans 2016 lors de la Journée Test le 5 juin. Peut-être en saurons-nous un peu plus sur les forces en présence, mais on semble se diriger vers une course très ouverte dans la Sarthe.
Round 2 of the 2016 FIA Endurance World Championship (FIA WEC) was won by the N°8 Audi/Michelin of Di Grassi/Duval/Jarvis who completed the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps with a two-lap cushion over the N°2 Porsche. None of the top teams were spared technical trouble – not to mention a good few collisions – but the Ingolstadt make will be glad to be the first team to thwart its Stuttgart rival since this same race in 2015. There was success again for Ferrari/Michelin in LM GTE Pro.
If Belgium’s round of the FIA WEC is widely seen as a dress rehearsal ahead of the Le Mans 24 Hours, it is hard to know what to make of today’s clash in the Ardennes Mountains.
To begin with, who could have predicted the exceptionally fine weather we had all weekend at Spa, a circuit which – wrongly or rightly – is popularly associated with poor weather?
Bright sunshine effectively saw the track temperature soar to around the 50°C mark at one moment, a value rarely recorded here at this time of the year and one which presented the teams with an unfamiliar enigma concerning race strategy.
That said, today’s race is more likely to be remembered for the cascade of incidents that struck all the factory prototypes. Porsche and Toyota both spent long spells in front, but victory ended up in the hands of the N°8 Audi R18/Michelin of Di Grassi/Duval/Jarvis, while Hartley (N°1 Porsche 919 Hybrid/Michelin) bagged the fastest race lap (1m58.431s), 0.459s short of his best effort here in 2015.
In the seven weeks that remain until this year’s Le Mans (June 18/19), all the LMP1-H teams will now be eager to identify the reasons for their different technical issues and, more importantly, respond with cures in time for the calendar’s showpiece which lasts four times as long as the clash at Spa!
The scenario was much more straightforward in LM GTE Pro, at least as far as Ferrari/Michelin was concerned. AF Corse’s two new 488 GTEs qualified in first and second places and the ‘pole’-winning N°71 car collected its second straight victory. It looked like another one-two result was going to happen until Bruni/Calado’s N°51 machine was cruelly halted (engine) with less than 10 minutes to go.
It was a day of mixed fortunes, too, for Ford. Its N°67 GT/Michelin encouragingly picked up the silver medal ahead of the N°97 Aston Martin, but Mücke suffered a frightening crash in the N°66 machine with around an hour remaining.
Aston Martin took the LM GTE Am victory with its N°98 Vantage (Dalla Lana/Lamy/Lauda), ahead of the N°83 Ferrari F458 Italia.
LMP2 honours were secured by the N°36 Alpine A460-Nissan of Menezes/Lapierre/Richelmi thanks to a last-gasp passing manoeuvre after a particularly tense scrap between a handful of potential victors. The top four were covered by less than six seconds at the chequered flag!
The FIA WEC regulars will now reconvene with the other teams invited to contest the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours for the official pre-Le Mans Test Day on June 5. Perhaps that will provide us with a clearer picture of how the different players compare, but it looks like we are heading for a very open race this year in La Sarthe!
