WRC ; FRIDAY IN FRANCE: OGIER REIGNS IN CORSICA

SÉBASTIEN OGIER DOMINATED FRIDAY’S OPENING LEG OF THE CORSICA LINEA - TOUR DE CORSE TO LEAVE HIS RIVALS FLOUNDERING ON THE MEDITERRANEAN ISLAND MOUNTAIN ROADS.

A peerless performance from the FIA World Rally Championship leader on the first all-asphalt encounter of the season enabled him to build a 33.6sec lead in his Ford Fiesta over a frustrated Thierry Neuville.

Like everyone else, Neuville had no answer to Ogier’s pace as the Frenchman won the first three of four twisty and narrow speed tests near Bastia. Such was his mastery that Ogier drove around a handling problem which threatened to spin his car at tight hairpins.
He won both passes through the long 49.03km La Porta - Valle di Rostino by a massive 10sec and said: “We pushed hard all day, it’s a great start. I was surprised with my time in the first stage as it wasn’t perfect. I had the same kind of oversteer I had in the first round in Monte-Carlo.”

Ogier’s task was simplified when arch-rival and WRC legend Sébastien Loeb crashed his Citroën C3 out of second place in the second test.
The nine-time world champion, competing in the second of three guest appearances, carried too much pace into a left corner 400 metres after the start and dropped into a deep ditch.
Esapekka Lappi denied Ogier a clean sweep of stage wins with victory on SS4

Brake problems hindered Neuville this morning and although the Belgian climbed to second, he was powerless to halt Ogier. “I didn’t feel completely confident in the car. We have to accept we can’t beat him, but must stay positive and keep the other guys behind,” he said.

His Hyundai i20 ended 5.1sec ahead of Kris Meeke, who suffered intermittent intercom problems in his C3. Ott Tänak was fourth, the Estonian a further 5.5sec adrift after fighting handling problems at the rear of his Toyota Yaris.
Esapekka Lappi ended Ogier’s hopes of a clean sweep by winning the final test in a Yaris. His success promoted him to fifth, 0.3sec ahead of Elfyn Evans, who quickly gelled with 2003 world champion co-driver Phil Mills, deputising for the injured Dan Barritt.

Dani Sordo was seventh, and the last of a trio covered by less than a second. Finland’s Jari-Matti Latvala lacked confidence in his Yaris in eighth, but held off Andreas Mikkelsen by 4.2sec.

The Norwegian lost time with a spin and a brief trip into a ditch this morning, issues compounded by understeer when he tried to raise his pace this afternoon. Bryan Bouffier completed the leaderboard in a Fiesta.

Saturday’s second leg is the longest, with six stages totalling 136.90km. Three morning tests are repeated in the afternoon as the event visits the northernmost Cap Corse tip of the island for the first time since 1995.

PRE-EVENT FAVOURITE JAN KOPECKÝ LED WRC 2 AT THE CORSICA LINEA - TOUR DE CORSE AFTER FRIDAY’S OPENING LEG – BUT IT WAS FAR FROM EASY FOR THE CZECH STAR.

He held a 20.9sec advantage in his Skoda Fabia R5 over Yoann Bonato after four tough speed tests on twisty and narrow asphalt roads in mountains near Bastia.
He won two tests but was kept honest by Stéphane Lefebvre, who topped the times on the other two special stages in an impressive debut for Citroën’s new C3 R5 car.
Had brake problems not cost the Frenchman more than a minute in the opening stage, Kopecký’s job would have been far tougher.
He led by 2.2sec at the midpoint, but his second stage victory in the marathon 49.03km test from La Porta to Valle di Rostino stretched the gap over Bonato in another C3.
Stéphane Lefebvre recovered from brake failure in SS1 to finish Friday in fourth in WRC 2

“It was tricky this morning but the conditions were better this afternoon,” said Kopecký, winner of the opening round in Monte-Carlo. “I tried to push a lot more in the afternoon and worked to try to find the best possible balance on the car.”
Ole Christian Veiby was third in a Fabia, 47.9sec behind Bonato. The young Norwegian spun twice and his advantage over a recovering Lefebvre was only 2.5sec with two more pursuers hot on his heels in a close battle for the final podium place.
Local hero Pierre Louis Loubet lost time with a spin but the Corsican was 6.9sec adrift of Lefebvre in a Hyundai i20, while Fabio Andolfi was 8.4sec further behind in another Fabia.
The opening stage ended the hopes of Sweden winner Takamoto Katsuta, who crashed his Ford Fiesta R5, and also brought a premature end to Nil Solans’ day.
Nicolas Ciamin dropped four minutes after crashing and damaging a wheel, while a sticking throttle later caused more heartache for the Frenchman. Also in trouble was Lukasz Pieniazek who lost seven minutes after hitting a wall.
