Citroën n’est peut-être plus engagé officiellement en WRC, mais c’est quand même une DS3 WRC/Michelin qui a signé le premier chrono de référence 2016. Le Britannique Kris Meeke a remporté le Shakedown du Rallye Monte-Carlo devant Ogier et Sordo.
La saison 2016 a démarré cet après-midi avec la séance d’essais officielle du Rallye Monte-Carlo organisée sur un nouveau tracé de 3,65 km aux portes de Gap. Cette spéciale dominait la ville et offrait un point de vue époustouflant sur le Massif des Ecrins et la falaise de Ceüse.
Le Shakedown était représentatif du rallye avec un départ très sinueux en montée et une dernière partie très rapide. Mais avec la neige et la terre ramenée sur la route par les premières voitures, la route fut très vite maculée de boue. De fait, les meilleurs chronos ont été réalisés en début de séance.
Et c’est , au volant d’une DS3 WRC chaussée de pneus Michelin Pilot Sport SS5 super-soft, qui a signé un 2min07s2 à son premier tour, 2/10e de seconde devant Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin) et 3s4 devant Dani Sordo qui étrennait la nouvelle i20 WRC/Michelin.
Les chronos n’ont pas été améliorés lors des runs suivants, sauf par les pilotes M-Sport Mads Ostberg et Eric Camilli qui avaient démarré très prudemment. Le Norvégien et le Français ont signé leurs meilleurs chronos lors du 3e run, mais loin du temps de référence.
Thierry Neuville (Hyundai/Michelin) a réalisé le 4e meilleur temps, à seulement 4/10e de seconde de son équipier. Andreas Mikkelsen (VW/Michelin) a devancé Jari-Matti Latvala (VW/Michelin) de 7/10e. Robert Kubica (Ford), Stéphane Lefebvre (Citroën/Michelin), Mads Ostberg (Ford/Michelin) et Hayden Paddon (Hyundai/Michelin) complètent le top-ten.
Le Gallois Elfyn Evans a signé le temps de référence en catégorie WRC-2 (2min17s9) au volant de la nouvelle Ford Fiesta R5 chaussée par Michelin. Il a devancé de plus de 5 secondes Julien Maurin (Skoda/Michelin) et Quentin Gilbert (Citroën DS3 R5/Michelin).
Les pilotes ont multiplié les passages pour pouvoir tester différents pneumatiques (super-soft et neige) une dernière fois avant le grand départ du Rallye Monte-Carlo demain. Après la cérémonie de départ et un changement de pneumatiques à Monaco, les concurrents enchaîneront les deux premières spéciales à partir de 20h18.
Ce premier choix de pneus sera difficile car, non seulement il s’effectuera à une centaine de kilomètres des spéciales, mais surtout quatre heures avant le départ de l’ES2 ! Comment vont évoluer les conditions, là-haut au col du Fanget (1459m) entre l’heure du choix (18h00) et le départ de la nouvelle spéciale Barles-Seyne à 22h11 ?
Citroën is not registered as a factory team for this year’s WRC, but this evening’s shakedown was won by a DS3 WRC/Michelin with Ulsterman Kris Meeke behind the wheel. Ogier and Sordo were second and third.
The 2016 WRC started today with the first shakedown test of year, a 3.65km test that overlooked Gap and provided a breath-taking view of the nearby, snow-capped Ecrins Mountains.
The stage’s profile was relatively representative of what crews can expect this week, with a twisty climb to begin with, followed by a fast final section. However, mud and dirt dragged onto the road by the rally cars soon coated the surface in mud and the fastest times were posted early on.
Kris Meeke emerged as the man to beat in his DS3 WRC equipped with ‘super-soft’ Michelin Pilot Sport SS5 tyres. His time of 2m7.2s on his first pass was two-tenths better than the effort of Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin), while Dani Sordo (+3.4s) was third in the brand new i20 WRC/Michelin.
Only M-Sport’s Mads Ostberg and Eric Camilli, who started particularly cautiously, managed to improve on their third runs, but they were well short of Meeke’s benchmark.
Thierry Neuville was fourth, just four-tenths behind his Hyundai/Michelin team-mate but seven-tenths clear of Jari-Matti Latvala (VW/Michelin). Robert Kubica (Ford), Stéphane Lefebvre (Citroën/Michelin), Mads Ostberg (Ford/Michelin) and Hayden Paddon (Hyundai/Michelin) rounded out the evening’s top 10.
Welshman Elfyn Evans was fastest in WRC2 (2m17.9s) in the new Michelin-equipped Ford Fiesta R5. He was more than five seconds quicker than Julien Maurin (Skoda/Michelin) and Quentin Gilbert (Citroën DS3 R5/Michelin).
Despite the worsening conditions, the drivers continued to try different tyre options (super-soft and snow) one last time before Thursday evening’s start. After the official send-off in Monaco, crews face the week’s first two stages, starting at 8:18pm.
