At 8:02am and 8:05am on Wednesday, January 15, the two i20 WRCs pulled out of Hyundai’s huge service park facility in Gap en route to their first WRC shakedown runs. Thierry Neuville (2m18.4s) and Dani Sordo (2m20.4s) were sixth and eighth fastest respectively.
The next day, it was time for serious business and the N°7 Hyundai (Neuville) left the start fitted with four Michelin Pilot Sport ‘super-soft’ racing tyres plus two studded Michelin Alpin 4 snow tyres in the boot. Dani Sordo had opted for four super-softs and two non-studded snow tyres as spares.
It was still dark when the Belgian – who was running second on the road – started SS1. At the first ‘split’, he was 4.5s up on Sébastien Ogier after 2.2km. The 2013 vice-champion was then caught out by a long icy right-hander, however, and his car smashed into a telegraph pole, spelling Neuville’s fourth Day 1 retirement on the Monte Carlo in as many years.
Meanwhile, Sordo was 12th on SS1, fourth on SS2 and fifth on SS3 to complete the opening loop in third place (+41.5s). The Spaniard started the afternoon’s stages with four non-studded and two studded tyres and was second fastest on SS4, 10.8s behind Latvala. He was then stopped on the next road section by an electrical short-circuit.
“Perhaps Dani could have repaired the problem and re-joined, but it’s not easy to work on a car between stages,” reflected Hyundai Motorsport boss Michel Nandan afterwards. “As for Thierry’s car, the roll cage wasn’t damaged and, despite the work required, he would have been able to re-join had the Monte Carlo allowed the Rally2 ruling.”
“It’s obviously disappointing but the times we achieved were encouraging. We are already looking forward to Rally Sweden. We had a five-day test on snow near Rovaniemi and we’ll have another two days before the start. Sweden demands good traction and stable handling at high speeds,” notes Nandan who was Peugeot Sport’s Technical Director when the 206 WRC claimed its first world class win in Sweden in 2000.
Neuville will be joined there at Hyundai-Shell WRT by Finn Juho Hanninen and the team is expected to announce its crews for the next three or four rounds soon. Neuville and Atkinson could well figure on the list for Mexico, while the possibility of a third car during the latter part of the year is not to be ruled out. Bryan Bouffier could stay on as test driver. Nothing has yet been signed, but there will be plenty of development work to do, since Hyundai Motorsport is also preparing a version of the i20 WRC for 2015.
Mercredi 15 janvier, à 8h02 et 8h05, les nouvelles Hyundai i20 WRC ont successivement quitté l’immense structure Hyundai dressée au parc d’assistance de Gap, pour leurs premiers tours de roue officiels au Shakedown. En 2min18s4 et 2min20s4, Thierry Neuville et Dani Sordo ont signé les 6e et 8e chronos.
Le lendemain, jour de la Saint-Marcel, en voiture ! La Hyundai i20 WRC N°7 de Thierry Neuville a quitté le parc d’assistance chaussée de quatre pneus Michelin Pilot Sport super-soft et deux pneus neige Michelin Alpin 4 cloutés dans le coffre. Dani Sordo avait choisi quatre super-soft et deux pneus neige non-cloutés.
Il faisait encore nuit lorsque Thierry s’est élancé dans l’ES1, en deuxième position sur la route. Le premier temps intermédiaire officiel le plaçait largement 4s5 devant Sébastien Ogier après 2,2 km. Puis le vice-champion du monde s’est fait surprendre dans un long virage à droite verglacé et sa voiture a percuté un poteau téléphonique. Quatrième abandon consécutif le 1er jour du Rallye Monte-Carlo pour Thierry Neuville.
De son côté, Dani Sordo a signé le 12e meilleur temps dans l’ES1, le 4e dans l’ES2 et le 5e dans l’ES3, pour rentrer au parc d’assistance en 3e position, à 41s5 du leader. Reparti avec quatre pneus neige non-cloutés et deux cloutés dans le coffre, l’Espagnol a réalisé le 2e meilleur temps dans l’ES4 (à 10s8 de Latvala) avant d’abandonner sur la liaison suivante en raison d’une panne électrique (problème de coupe-circuit).
Vendredi 17 janvier, à 14h00, il n’y avait plus d’i20 WRC en course. « Dani aurait peut-être pu réparer et repartir, mais il n’est pas évident d’intervenir entre deux spéciales », expliquait Michel Nandan, patron de Hyundai Motorsport, après-coup « Quant à la voiture de Thierry, l’arceau n’est pas touché et si le règlement avait accepté le Rally2, il aurait peut-être pu repartir, même s’il y aurait eu beaucoup de travail. »
« Le bilan est assez décevant bien sûr, mais les performances sont encourageantes. Nous sommes déjà tournés vers le Rallye de Suède. Nous avons effectué cinq jours d’essais sur la neige près de Rovaniemi et nous allons encore rouler deux jours avant le rallye. La Suède demande une bonne motricité et une grande stabilité dans les parties rapides. Amortissement et liaison au sol sont très importants », confie Michel Nandan, qui était directeur technique de Peugeot Sport quand la Peugeot 206 WRC a gagné son premier rallye mondial en Suède en 2000.
Thierry Neuville et le Finlandais Juho Hanninen seront les pilotes Hyundai-Shell WRT au Rallye de Suède. Le team va bientôt dévoiler ses équipages pour les trois ou quatre rallyes à venir. Neuville et Atkinson pourraient faire partie du voyage au Mexique. L’engagement d’une troisième voiture en course à partir de la mi-saison n’est pas à exclure. Par ailleurs, Bryan Bouffier pourrait rester pilote d’essais. Rien n’est signé, mais le travail de développement ne va pas manquer cette année puisque Hyundai Motorsport prépare également l’i20 WRC version 2015.
