    1981 Yamaha XV750 - 'Black Mat Ed'

Most builders using the XV750 as a base for their custom project have usually been inspired by the likes of Classified Moto – who have shown the amazing potential of these previously overlooked donor bikes. Not Tony Mroczek from Poland (yes another one, we are big there). He has been inspired by something completely different. "The inspiration came from Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands movie" he says. "From an early age I've been completely crazy about everything related to Tim Burton’s creation". Tony has also grown up with many different motorcycles. Actually, over the years he has owned numerous Yamaha's and Kawasaki's of every capacity, but now he is enjoying this custom XV he likes to call 'Black Mat Ed' – it's the latest creation to come out of Tonys garage named 'Fabryka Edwarda' or 'Edward's Factory' in english.

Tony started this low-budget project by removing everything off the bike that wasn't necessary. "I wanted to have a lighter bike with a thinner, dynamic look" he says. "That’s why there is no front or rear fender. The only massive, beautifully shaped part of the bike was supposed to be a tank and the front suspension which was taken from a 2001 Yamaha’s R1."

"The upside down forks look massive again and gives very specific, clear and strong character to the bike. The mounting seat has been created from scratch. Custom seat was bought from Harley Davidson and then painted gold. I decided to paint some other parts golden to match the front suspension. But first I had an idea to paint it brazen. I used a golden color because it contrasts really well with black – black frame, wheels, matt tank and other parts. And I think it looks very enigmatic... what I like most."

Tony wanted the exhaust to be modest and not very conspicuous. "But quite noisy" he says. The front rim, brakes calliper and brake plate also came from a R1. All tires are new and Metzeler Marathons. Battery is installed at the bottom of the frame, between two wheels.

Tony decided to leave the stock tank, which has been slightly raised up. The tank isn't quite finished yet though. "I will be painting the tank with Tim Burton inspired artwork, probably associated with Edward Scissorhands and Nightmare Before Christmas stuff."

This young Polish builder is blown away by how much fun the bike is to ride. "It's absolutely amazing to ride." he says. "While riding you feel absolutely free. The engine purrs so nicely. It feels like you are cutting the air with a really sharp knife." Or maybe with a pair scissors?

    SATÈN, THE SEVENTIES STYLE

    SATÈN, THE SEVENTIES STYLE
    HEADBANGER MOTORCYCLES
OFFICIALLY UNVEIL SATÈN, THE SEVENTIES STYLE SINGLE-CYLINDER,
    AT THE MOTOR BIKE EXPO
HEADBANGER, INSPIRED BY THE SEVENTIES, DISTILS THIS SPIRIT INTO A NEW ENDURO MOTORCYCLE,
    WITH A 600CC SINGLE-CYLINDER, AIR-COOLED, CARBURETTOR-EQUIPPED ENGINE.
A COOL, BRISK MOTORCYCLE, EVOKING ITS NAMESAKE, THE FRANCIACORTA DOCG SPUMANTE!!

As previously announced, 2013 opens with the winds of change blasting through Headbanger, so the Verona exhibition - the Motor Bike Expo - will allow the first genuine Italian Custom Factory to showcase all its new products and ideas for 2013, but also to beckon all enthusiasts – the press and the public – to enter a special world animated by tons of passion and creativity, eager to blow your mind.

That’s precisely what Headbanger does, surprise, breathing life into a new project, which makes a thundering stage entrance in Verona, reinterpreting the classic enduro motorcycles of the seventies, with a 600cc air cooled, single cylinder engine, rigorously equipped with carburettor, simple, straightforward, fun: raise your glasses to the HEADBANGER SATÈN!

SATÈN was conceived almost by chance, originating from the request of a Headbanger bike owner, in love with the bike and the brand philosophy, who wished he could flank his HB V-Twin with a single cylinder motorcycle, built by hand, with painstaking detail; a ‘special’, reminiscent of the bikes back in the Seventies, which equally embodied all the Headbanger core values!

Headbanger rose to the challenge, creating over the course of several weeks this new motorcycle, dedicated to all aficionados. SATÈN owes its name to a special DOCG wine, produced in the Franciacorta region – also the site of the Factory – where all the brands motorcycles are born. Therefore, it is dedicated to all those who refute banality and appreciate and share values such as simplicity, healthy ignorance(which for HB, means no electronics, fuel injection nor software) and freedom, but also lovers of sixties and seventies’ music and of sheer fun, and who yearn for an essential, light, enjoyable motorcycle, ideal for urban contexts and dirt tracks alike.

Until today, its production motorcycles were characterized by big American twin-cylinders, based onsoftail and hardtail frames, so Headbanger is paving the way with a motorcycle with decisively different technical features, which is however crafted with the same painstaking detail and quality, in the pure HB style!

SATÈN has a different heartbeat; it’s a single-cylinder air-cooled 600cc engine equipped withcarburettor, electronic ignition and kick-starter, 5-speed gearbox, foam air filter and HB 2 in 1 exhaust. The mechanics feature a single-beam frame split square tube oil/steel/aluminum, adjustable Paioli suspensions (USD forks with shock absorber compression and extension adjustment), Ø 330 mm front disc brake and HB Beringer 4 piston front brake caliper, Ø 250 mm rear disc brake with HB brake caliper.

SATÈN is equipped with 17” wheels, mounting a 120-70 tyre at the front and 160-60 at the rear (both street and heavy tread tyres can be mounted!!!). It’s a sleek machine at only 90cm from the ground and weighs in at less than 140 kg. The capacious 12 liters fuel tank gives it a good range.

The stylistic accents of SATÈN stand their ground too, including a hand-crafted leather saddle as the rear tail made in raw aluminium, special Headbanger footrests, stencil Headbanger graphics and a raw metal paintjob, enhancing its lines.
The technical and stylistic features of SATÈN, including such details as the understated handlebar controls, render this new addition to the Headbanger family a genuinely unique bike.

SATÈN will retail at a tentative price of 9,000 euro.

BMW Z4 GTE set for 2013 ALMS

    BMW Z4 GT3
BMW Motorsport has developed the Z4 GTE which will compete in the 2013 American Le Mans Series.
Team RLL has been using a BMW M3 in the ALMS' GT Class for the last four years, managing to achieve a first place overall in 2012. This year they will be switching to the Z4 GTE which "has everything it needs to continue the success story", according to BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt.
Based on the Z4 GT3, the GTE version was developed specifically for ALMS and this year will be further tweaked ahead of 2014's ALMS / GRAND-AM merger. It will be driven by Bill Auberlen, Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller, but Hand will compete in only a portion of the season because he has a contract with BMW in DTM. Whenever he won't be available, John Edwards will take his place behind the wheel.
In addition, Maxime Martin is also set for a full season with BMW Team RLL, while Uwe Alzen and Joerg Mueller will take part in long-distance races such as Petit Le Mans and Sebring.

    THE VOLKLINGER S14 SILVIA

Satomi Nakawatase’s S14 is unlike any Silvia you have ever seen before. The car has evolved over the last couple of years from an interesting military themed project into something that words can literally not describe. The last time I saw it, Satomi had replaced the side glass with metal sheets and made a removable tank-like cover for the windscreen. What really makes this ichi-yon special however is that it’s driven and drifted on a regular basis, not just a bizarre creation to wow people at shows. McLaren preparing to celebrate their 50th anniversary

McLaren preparing to celebrate their 50th anniversary
McLaren has announced the company will celebrate their 50th anniversary on September 2nd, 2013.
Originally launched in 1963 as Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd, the company will celebrate the occasion by using a 50th anniversary logo on everything from their shirts to the new MP4-28 Formula 1 that will debut on January 31st. McLaren also intends to host a variety of "unique events and celebrations" throughout the year.
According to McLaren Chairman Ron Dennis, “McLaren’s history is long and storied, but McLaren’s legacy is harder to define – and that’s because it’s still being vividly written every day by the dedicated men and women who work at the McLaren Technology Centre. Bruce McLaren wrote the beginning of the story, and the legend is going to continue for many years to come. I’m only a chapter, not the book, and I want other people to come in and write their own chapters as time goes by."
Over the years, McLaren has made a name for itself with a variety of high-performance models. Their entry into Formula One began in 1966 and they have gone on to win more races (182) than any other constructor. McLaren also employed a number of notable drivers including Alain Prost, James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Lewis Hamilton and Ayrton Senna.
In the United States, McLaren dominated the CanAm series by winning five successive championships and 43 different races. The company also built cars that won the Indy 500 in 1974 and 1976.

Paolo Simoncelli launches Squadra Corse Sic 58 team

On Saturday evening, for the second consecutive year the Buon Compleanno Sic (happy birthday) event took place to remember the late and still very much missed Marco Simoncelli who would have turned 26 on January 20th.
The event was organized by the Marco Simoncelli Foundation and held at the 105 Stadium in Rimini with all proceeds of the evening going to help the Foundation carry out their charity projects. Almost 5000 people turned up for the event including friends like Mattia Pasini and Valentino Rossi.
The event also was used to present the new “Squadra Corse Sic 58” team that will see two young riders Kevin Sabatucci and Mattia Casadei race in the Italian PreGP championship (for 13 to 16-year olds) on Honda machines with San Carlo as their sponsor and Fausto Gresini supplying the technical support, but more importantly the team will be run by Paolo Simoncelli.
The initial idea of forming a racing team honouring Simoncelli’s name came from his former MotoGP crewchief Aligi Deganello (now with Aprilia in WSBK’s) and Aldo Drudi back in March 2012, who both thought that Paolo Simoncelli could really help in the formation of talented young riders.

Tara Browne's 1965 AC 289 Sports by Binder, Edwards & Vaughan

It is all too easy to proclaim a car 'a work of art’. In the case of the 1960s triumvirate of applied artists Douglas Binder and Dudley Edwards, and their manager/agent David Vaughan, pieces such as the ‘Tara Browne AC’ were worthy of exhibition in a London gallery.

Known collectively as ‘BEV’, Binder and Edwards applied psychedelic hand-painting techniques to cars, buildings and furniture. The completed piece of art was a combination of their painting process (the choice of colour and design) applied to an object. Their design, only when juxtaposed on to the unique shape of the subject, became the completed piece.
Working in the mid-1960s, the group was fronted by the extrovert, but not always easy to handle, Vaughan (late father of the actress Sadie Frost) while Binder and Edwards conceived and completed the works.

Edwards was inspired by the artwork of the world of showmen and fun fairs. Together with Binder, he liked to combine sharp edges with smooth gradations: “I feel the effect is somewhat akin to the chords played by Thelonious Monk,” he told Classic Driver.
Having worked on furniture and wall murals, BEV then considered applying the concept to cars, first on a 1960 Buick Electra Convertible. As Edwards recalls, the group “didn’t expect anyone to take the risk of having their cars painted without first seeing an example.”
Cars or furniture, the process was the same: a few coats of gesso sanded down to a “glass-like finish” then the colour (household gloss paint mixed with ‘Flamboyant Enamel’) applied by hand.

Guinness heir The Hon. Tara Browne (who was to introduce Binder and Edwards to The Beatles) commissioned BEV to give his newly acquired AC 289 Sports ‘the treatment’. (This car, a 289, was British-built with a 427-type body and chassis and – for legal reasons – could no longer be called a ‘Cobra’.)
The dazzling AC was exhibited at the Robert Fraser Gallery in Mayfair and became the subject of a photo-shoot by Lord Snowdon there and on Primrose Hill, North London, for both ‘Paris Match’ and the American magazine ‘Look’.
Pathé News described the AC thus: “It isn’t a car at all, it’s a painting. The art world is playing a new game with synthetic and flamboyant enamels, combining 1930s-style décor with pin-table pop art. This is art on wheels.”

Edwards spent some time in the passenger seat of the ferocious AC. “At that time it was probably the closest feeling to a dragster that one could have on our roads. The top speed was not impressive... but the acceleration: WOW.
“You could hear every piston... the engine would be rocking the car from side to side... you were pinned back into your seat like an astronaut experiencing g-force at take-off. It was a very masculine machine, no frilly bits inside – all engine surrounded by bodywork that, compared to most cars, was like tin foil.”
Browne was to achieve worldwide fame after he died, aged 21, at the wheel of his Lotus Elan and was immortalised in the Beatles song ‘A Day in the Life’.
Edwards and Binder went on to paint Paul McCartney’s ‘Magic Piano’ and to create murals on many 1960s shop fronts, including ‘Dandie Fashions’ and ‘Lord John’. Edwards then painted murals in the houses of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.
And the AC 289 Sports? Marque expert Trevor Legate tells us that a few years ago the car was still registered in the UK and is now painted... wait for it... metallic burgundy.

The sun was setting fast as the bikes began the arduous climb out of the Sarlacc pit. The deep sand had levied a burdensome tax on the majority of the Tigers’ bearing surfaces. But they soldiered on, knowing that salvation would only come upon reaching the distant checkpoint. A journey that started weeks ago in the urban confines of Portland city limits had taken both riders, bikes, and gear to the very limits of endurance.
Here on this lonely dune, amidst the straining motor, rapidly dropping temperatures, and darkening skies, they learned to live again. This was Portland to Dakar, and it would take everything. www.RideIcon.com/PortlandToDakar

It was an ugly task that Team Icon laid at the feet of our Tiger 800s. To complete our ‘Portland to Dakar’ challenge, we asked the near impossible: miles of asphalt, vertical faces of rock, endless stretches of soft sand and deep snow, and more water landings than a Pacific campaign. The term dual-sport failed to even remotely describe our journey, which is why we chose the Tiger 800XC. The fully adjustable seat and bars, large operational range, and oversized generator for electrical auxiliaries made long miles in the saddle no problem, while serious off-road credentials such as a 21″ front wheel, muscular motor, stout suspension, and a burly frame delivered us from the aforementioned evils of our passage.
