    EHINGER KRAFTRAD ‘SNOW RACER’

    Snow motorcycle
Ehinger Kraftrad is a small German workshop based in Hamburg that builds intriguing vintage Harley-Davidsons. Run by Uwe Ehinger and Katrin Oeding, it’s called
‘Kraftrad’ rather than the usual ‘Motorrad’—because Motorrad generally means mass-produced goods. Whereas Ehinger Kraftrad specializes in very limited scale, high quality production.
    Snow motorcycle
Uwe Ehinger’s background is in racing, and this classy ‘Snow Racer’ is inspired by 1930s race bikes. The heart of the Snow Racer is a story in itself: it’s a 1946 U model engine fitted with 1936 VLH cylinders, giving a capacity of 80ci. The bottom end has been completely overhauled, with new bearings and refined balancing. The heads are from a 1948 ULH, reworked to improve performance and provide better cooling.
    Snow motorcycle
Further mods include tweaked camshafts, a Dell’Orto carburetor, and an unrestricted 30s-style exhaust system. (“It serves more as a directional guide for exhaust fumes than a means for reducing noise,” Ehinger notes wryly.)
    Snow motorcycle
A modified Baker 6-speed transmission was placed in the rigid frame. And then Ehinger developed a custom coupling for the primary drive, with a matching clutch basket. The brakes are also custom: the specialist manufacturer Behringer created one-off hubs for the Snow Racer’s 21” and 19” wheels, and inboard brakes were installed. Then Ehinger fitted a Harley VL fork—equipped with a custom triple tree—and in a moment of inspiration, a modified Yamaha TY80 gas tank.
    Snow motorcycle
The Snow Racer is a runner, and not a show bike. Ehinger Kraftrad’s other builds are just as unusual, but like this one, they’re eminently rideable too. Head over to the company’s very stylish website to discover more.
With thanks to Brian Awitan of Imogene + Willie.

Marco Melandri on top on final day of testing at Jerez

    WSBK 2013 Jerez test
On the second and final day of World Superbike testing at Jerez de La Frontera, the rain that had hampered testing from last Saturday to Monday as expected finally left the Andalucian track and the teams were finally able to get in a decent day of work, before heading to Phillip Island next month for another two test sessions (February 14-15 and February 20-21) ahead of the first round of the 2013 season scheduled for February 24th.
Marco Melandri with his 63 laps rose to the top of the timesheets and stopped the clock in 1’40″758, a little more than a tenth of a second of second faster (0.103s) than Davide Giuliano on his second day with the Aprilia RSV4 - who was fastest yesterday in the wet - and the two Italians were the only riders to lap under the 1.41 barrier.
Aprilia factory rider Eugene Laverty was third fatest even though he suffered a harmless crash as did his new team mate Sylvain Guintoli who concluded the test in 6th behind Suzuki’s Leon Camier and Pata Honda’s Jonathan Rea (yesterday Pata Honda had electronic issues). BMW Italia’s new rider Chaz Davies was 7th and almost a second off pace from Melandri, while further down on the charts were Leon Haslam (+1.653) and Jules Cluzel (1.877) and debuting Ivan Clementi who more than 4 seconds off pace with his satellite BMW.
Just like yesterday, Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes and Loris Baz didn’t use transponders, but apparently Sykes was lapping in the low 1.40s.

Kaw-ster Cafe Racer from Slovakia by Roman Juris

Kaw-ster cafe racer from Roman Juris of Slovakia

ZR7 used as the base for the build
The Kneeslider is fortunate to have a lot of readers from all over the world and sometimes they send us photos about a motorcycle they've built, but, though the information is all there, I have to rely on Google translate to sort it all out, and that's what I was working with here, a Kawasaki ZR7 based cafe racer from builder Roman Juris of Slovakia. Translation difficulties aside, it's a beauty.
Everything was disassembled, the rear sub frame was redesigned and rebuilt and now mounts a new cafe racer style tail section, the standard front forks were replaced with inverted forks from a Monster, the single sided swingarm, likewise, is Monster sourced and replaces the standard Kawasaki unit. The seat, so often an afterthought on cafe racers, where the builder glues on a thin slab of foam, is instead a gorgeous work of brown upholstery that fits the tail section perfectly.

Not the usual cafe racer slab of foam
The paint scheme, strongly resembles the Ala-Verda, a beautiful British Racing Green and gold pinstripe combination that complements the build.

Kaw-ster cafe racer ready for body work
The Kaw-ster is definitely very well executed and the result of Roman's work is a classic cafe racer with the right stance and obvious good looks. Nice work, Roman!

    ATJ Project's '83 Honda CB400 Café Racer

I'm here to tell you something that I now know beyond a shadow of a doubt. ATJ Project's main man, Adam Jasiński, is one persistent, determined son-of-a-bitch. Looking back through the records, he first contacted us in early September of 2012 with photos of a bike he'd just finished. We liked it and asked if he could get us some decent photos of. He said yes, and then spent the next five months battling with cameras, lights, SD cards and our tachyon-sized attention spans trying desperately to impress us. I swear at one point I actually forgot who he was and introduced myself to him a second time. But he soldiered on and on and on until finally, when the moon was aligned in the third house of Sagittarius and an albino dog in China barked three times, he managed to wow us with the photos you see before you. Adam, I'm here to say thanks. Thanks for persisting. And thanks for putting up with our fussiness. If you're in Poland and looking for a custom bike, I can guarantee you this is the guy that will go the extra mile. Or month, as the case may be...
Here's Adam - and not a moment too soon. “A few words about us first. I am Polish and came from a family with a strong motorbike history. Everything was started by my father (again with the Dads - Andrew). He was a four-time Motocross champion in my country. So bikes were always in our garage. My older brother Tom and me started our adventure on 2 wheels when we were only 6 or 7 years old. Now I can say that we love really vintage bikes.”
“One day we saw a café racer in a movie, and this was the moment when we decided to try and make such a bike. We bought a destroyed Honda CB400, disassembled it, cut the frame, hand made the seat, painted the tank etc. Finally the project turned out very good. Then came second bike, a Yamaha XS650, and a third...”

Note the detailing on the rear-view mirror
“Here's a few words about bike. It's a Honda CB 400 from 1983. We have painted it in a "Gulf" style. The frame is cut, the rear is converted to café, and painted silver. We hand made the seat with blue thread, the boards (not sure if he means the pegs or the heat shields - Andrew), and the rear fender which is trimmed in brown leather. The tires are modern street ones, and the exhaust is straight-through.”

Cool beyond a shadow of a doubt
“We made a Facebook fanpage. We put news, style photos, our ideas, and new projects up there. Maybe in the next year we would like to try make ATJ-Project our latest local business.”
“A few days ago we bought 3 honda CB400s and a Yamaha DT250 from 1978, so in 2-3 months we will have lots of new projects. We can't wait for the spring to start built bikes. Thanks for looking.”

    The 'Hippie' Porsche 917-021

Only just eclipsed by the marque’s first-ever victory at Le Mans, a sensation of the 1970 24-hour race was Martini Racing’s psychedelic long-tail Porsche 917. So popular was the purple/green/white car that other race organisers said: “Please bring us the hippie”...

‘Porsche 917-021’, the subject of a new book by Jacques Breuer and Raymond Collignon, tells the story of the other 'hippie' Porsche 917K, its time racing in the 1970 World Championship of Makes and subsequent life as a road (!) and historic racing car.
In recent years, it has been painstakingly restored by Mecauto (as you can see below) for current owner Vincent Gaye. With a brand-new chassis, rebuilt engine and dazzling Martini & Rossi paint scheme, 917-021 returned to La Sarthe for the 2012 Le Mans Classic.
Turning the clock back to 1970, it was Martini Racing’s Hans-Dieter Dechent who offered ‘his’ (actually a factory car) 917-043 for Porsche’s recently appointed designer, Anatole Lapine, to decorate.

Departing from the planned white-with-red ‘script’, Lapine penned the swirling ‘hippie’ design, first laying purple and then matt fluorescent green on factory-fresh white Porsche paintwork. The work was completed over the Le Mans week, using some 1,500 spray cans.
“When it was finished, nobody could move their index fingers any more,” recalled Dechent. Porsche’s Ferdinand Piëch, the man behind the 917 project, was less impressed. “You know, a race car just has to be white,” he remarked drily.

Weeks later, the organisers of the Watkins Glen Six Hours wanted their own ‘hippie’ 917. With the works Le Mans long-tail back at Stuttgart, Martini Racing took over the Finnish AAW team’s 917-021 Kurz and the Franco-Dutch pairing of Larrousse and Van Lennep (below) raced in ‘hippie’ colours to ninth place one day, sixth the next. It was subsequently repainted yellow/red in another psychedelic design, this time for AAW’s long-term sponsor Shell.

You can see from the photographs how accurately the restorers followed the original. And this car remains the sole original ‘hippie’ 917, as the factoryLangheck 917-043 was converted to a 1971-spec car for the Gulf racing team’s Le Mans entry and subsequently scrapped by a ruthless Porsche management.

Scrapped?! Man, it’s enough to make you cry.
