WSBK : Sykes wins 7 lap sprint race at Laguna / Sykes s’impose dans un sprint de 7 tours à Laguna

Action all the way in second US WSBK race.

 

The second WSBK race at Laguna Seca was as hot on track as the air temperature as after 25 exciting laps, Sykes claimed the race two win.

From the start it was Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) who once again grabbed the holeshot into turn one and as the packed field sorted themselves out around the first few turns it was Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) and race one winner and team mate Marco Melandri who slotted himself into second and third ahead of the fast starting Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki).

Guintoli applied the pressure immediately and after following the reigning champion for a couple of laps made his move, taking the lead into turn 6 on lap 5 only to lose it immediately as Sykes fought back. Melandri also seized the moment to take advantage of an off line Guintoli to move into third as the battle at the front now raged between six riders after Davide Giugliano (Ducati SuperbikeTeam) and Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia) looked to get in on the act.

Lap 11 saw the red flags shown after Alex Lowes suffered a spectacular crash at the Corkscrew. The British rider was taken to the medical centre for further checks.

After a short delay the race was restarted over 7 laps with grid positions decided by the race positions prior to the stop. That meant Sykes was still on Pole with the Aprilia duo of Melandri and Guintoli alongside. Row two for the restart saw Laverty, Elias and Giugliano.

When the race resumed the action was fast and furious but after only one completed lap the red flags were out again as Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia) crashed out on the start and finish straight.

However and at the third time of asking the race distance was completed with Sykes taking the win ahead of Guintoli and Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) who completed the podium places after Marco Melandri crashed out of the lead followed a short time later by Davide Giugliano who had been charging through the field.

Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki), Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia) and Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) rounded out the top six whilst in the EVO category the best classified rider was once again David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team) who finished a respectable 8th overall.

Parti en pole position pour une seconde course de 25 tours au Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) est parvenu à conserver l’avantage dans le premier virage devant Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) et son coéquipier Marco Melandri, vainqueur de la première course, ainsi que Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki). 

Guintoli a tout de suite essayé de mettre la pression sur le Champion du Monde en titre et a brièvement pris la première position dans le cinquième tour avant d’être repris par Sykes puis par Melandri, alors que Davide Giugliano (Ducati SuperbikeTeam) et Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia) étaient en embuscade juste derrière les leaders.

La course a été interrompue par drapeau rouge dans le onzième tour suite à la chute d’Alex Lowes dans le Corkscrew. Suite à cet incident, la course a été relancée pour 7 tours mais a de nouveau été arrêtée, dès le deuxième tour, en raison de la chute de Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia), qui est tombé sur la ligne droite du circuit californien et a percuté le pit-wall. 

Le Français était heureusement conscient à son arrivée au centre médical, suite à laquelle les autres pilotes ont repris leurs positions sur la grille pour un troisième départ, pour un nouveau sprint de 7 tours.

Sykes a alors réussi à s’imposer devant Guintoli et Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team), qui a pris la troisième place devant Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) et Elias alors que Melandri et Giugliano étaient tour à tour partis à la faute alors qu’ils luttaient pour le podium.

Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) a pris la sixième position, devant le premier pilote de la catégorie EVO, David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team), qui a marqué un important nombre de points en finissant huitième. Jérémy Guarnoni (MRS Kawasaki) a de son côté terminé onzième, derrière Alessandro Andreozzi (Team Pedercini) et Leon Camier, remplaçant de Claudio Corti au MV Agusta Reparto Corse.

Sykes repart de Laguna Seca avec 39 points d’avance sur Guintoli tandis que Rea passe à la troisième place du classement général, à 55 points du Champion en titre et avec deux petites longueurs d’avance sur Baz.

WSBK : Melandri s'impose dans la 1ère course de Laguna Seca / Laguna race one win goes to Melandri

Aprilia réalise le doublé avec Sylvain Guintoli, deuxième devant Tom Sykes.

Marco Melandri a remporté sa troisième victoire de la saison lors de la première des deux courses de la journée à Laguna Seca, où se déroule la neuvième manche du Championnat du Monde eni FIM Superbike 2014. Le pilote de l'Aprilia Racing Team a profité d'une erreur de Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team), qui était en pole, dans le Corkscrew pour s'emparer de la première position dès le premier tour et a ensuite mené jusqu'à l'arrivée.

Son coéquipier Sylvain Guintoli a fait tout son possible pour le suivre mais a dû se contenter de la deuxième place, devant le Champion du Monde en titre.

Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team) a été victime d'un highside dans le deuxième tour, alors que les trois premiers pilotes creusaient déjà l'écart sur Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike Team), promu à la quatrième place suite à la chute du Gallois.

A la mi-course, le record du tour établi en 2013 avait déjà été nettement battu et les trois leaders, grâce à un rythme exceptionnel, disposaient d'une confortable avance sur leurs concurrents.

A l'approche du dernier tiers de la course, Guintoli continuait de mettre la pression sur Melandri tandis que Sykes se contentait d'un rôle de spectateur et apercevait au loin l'Italien finalement faire le break pour décrocher sa troisième victoire de l'année.

Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team) a pris la quatrième place devant Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia) et Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team), qui complétait le Top 6 malgré une sortie de piste en début de course.

David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team) a remporté la victoire dans la catégorie EVO en terminant dixième devant Niccolo Canepa (Althea Racing Ducati) et Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia).

Leon Camier a quant à lui pris le point de la quinzième place pour sa première course avec le MV Agusta Reparto Corse, derrière Jérémy Guarnoni (MRS Kawasaki).

Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) a été contraint à l'abandon, tout comme Ayrton Badovini (Team Bimota Alstare), Aaron Yates (Team Hero EBR) et Peter Sebestyen (Team Toth BMW).

After 25 thrilling laps, Marco Melandri has won the opening race of the day at Laguna Seca.

Starting from Pole Position it was Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) who initially took the holeshot into turn one ahead of the Aprilia Racing Team duo of Marco Melandri and Sylvain Guintoli who both passed the reigning champion at the end of lap one after Sykes made a mistake at the Corkscrew.

Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team) crashed spectacularly from 4th on lap two as the leading three began to edge away from the fast starting Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) who was promoted to 4th after the Ducati rider’s departure.

By quarter race distance the circuit lap record set in 2013 had been smashed and the top three riders had a comfortable gap over the chasing pack.

As the race entered the final third, the tense battle at the front intensified as Giuntoli applied the pressure to his Italian team mate with Sykes watching the action unfold in front of him before the Italian broke away.

At the flag it was a rather spread out affair with Melandri taking the win, his 3rd of the season ahead of Guintoli and Sykes who claimed the final podium place.

Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team) finished a solid 4th with Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia) and Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) completing the top 6.

In the battle of the EVO riders it was David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team) that took the honours coming home in a solid 10th with Niccolò Canepa (Althea Racing Ducati) 11th and Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia) 12th.

Leon Camier (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) was classified 15th and took the final championship point on his debut for the Italian team.
Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) was a notable retirement as were Ayrton Badovini (Team Bimota Alstare), Aaron Yates (Team Hero EBR) and Peter Sebestyen (Team Toth BMW).
