    Silver Arrows Project

The Silver Arrows Project recreates snapshots of history featuring the Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union’s legendary silver race cars.
    Silver Arrows Project
The legendary silver race cars of Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union have been brought back to life using a combination of original photography and advanced 3D rendering. The Silver Arrows Project set out to capture snapshots in history that could never have been achieved with photographic technology of the time.

THE LEGEND IS BORN – NÜRBURGRING, GERMANY – 3 JUNE 1934
Just hours before the German Grand Prix, the new Mercedes-Benz W25s, painted in national white, are one kilogram over the weight limit to qualify to race. Alfred Neubauer, the team manager, in a last minute stroke of genius, orders the paint stripped off. He solved the problem for the day, and created a silver icon for the ages.

STONED TO LIFE – LASARTE, SPAIN – 22 SEPTEMBER 1935
Luigi Fagioli in his Mercedes W25 positions himself to take over Bernd Rosemeyer’s Auto Union car as they’re pelted by rocks on the Lasarte circuit of the Spanish Grand Prix. Mercedes rocked the rocky course by taking the top three finishes.

LET IT RAIN – BREMGARTEN, SWITZERLAND – 21 AUGUST 1938
Rudolf Caracciola and Manfred von Brauchitsch close in on their teammate, Richard Seaman, as torrential rain falls on the track. Caracciola, once again, proved his right to the title “Rainmaster” by expertly slipping past Seaman on the 11th lap and going on to win the race.

    THE FATHERLAND’S FINALE – NÜRBURGRING, GERMANY – 23 JULY 1939
Rudolf Caracciola victoriously crosses the finish line before a crowd of more than 250,000. This German Grand Prix was the last before the war and Caracciola’s final win.

    BOWLUS ROAD CHIEF

    53 Bowlus Road Chief
The Bowlus Road Chief is possibly the most beautiful caravan (or trailer, if you’re American) that I’ve ever seen, it’s an obvious competitor for the Airstream, which has been the defacto polished aluminium home-on-wheels since the 1930s.
Interestingly, the chief designer of the Airstream was a man named Hawley Bowlus – the same man whose name adorns the caravan you see here. Originally named William Hawley Bowlus was an engineer, designer and aircraft builder who taught Charles Lindbergh to fly and was responsible for building the Spirit of St. Louis – the first plane to fly non-stop across the North Atlantic.

Bowlus was designing trailers long before the name Airstream was ever mentioned, sadly he wasn’t the best at sales or marketing and his original company was floundering before it was taken over by his friend, Wally Byam. Byam came up with the Airstream name and partly due to the marketing, partly due to the looks and partly to do with the fuel efficient design – the Airstream became an icon.
The Bowlus Road Chief is an attempt to take the traditional Bowlus design back to its roots. The beautifully appointed interior is well-matched to the exterior, the design is jaw-droppingly beautiful and the gleaming aluminium is clearly the child of an aeronautical mind.

Each of the aircraft grade aluminium panels in the Bowlus Road Chief is hand cut, each rivet is hand riveted and every step of the construction process is painstakingly executed to ensure maximum longevity. The trailers aren’t cheap at $100,000 each but the long list of appointments and careful attention to detail go a long way towards explaining the price tag.
If you’re heading out on a road trip and want to bolt a genuine Bowlus creation to the back of your truck you can visit Bowlus here. If you love the design and wish it had a steering wheel built right into it, you might want to check out the beautiful Decoliner here.

    A 1939 Lindbergh Travel Trailer

A 1939 Lindbergh Travel Trailer, designed in San Carlos, California, by an engineer of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. This trailer was custom-built for famous aviator Charles Lindbergh, hence its name. Skinned in aluminum to reduce weight and enhance appearance, the trailer boasts two axles, one at each end. The design gave the trailer a great deal of stability when parked for overnight stops and did not require that the tongue be supported on jacks when unhitched from the tow vehicle. Exterior Color: Aluminum, Interior Color: Oak.
