Victorieux en 2014 et quatre fois vainqueur du Dakar, Marc Coma (Red Bull KTM Factory Team – Michelin) est le principal favori de l’édition 2015 avec le départ de son grand rival Cyril Despres chez Peugeot Sport. Cependant, l’Espagnol devra affronter l’armada des pilotes Honda qui souhaite renouer avec le succès.

Deuxième en 2012 derrière Cyril Despres et forfait en 2013, Marc Coma a réalisé un retour gagnant en 2014 en s’imposant pour la quatrième fois. En remportant avec brio la difficile cinquième étape entre Chilecito et Tucuman, l’Espagnol s’était assuré de la victoire finale. Il avait ensuite contrôlé et enchainé un sans-faute jusqu’à l’arrivée à Valparaiso (Chili).

Entouré de son fidèle porteur d’eau, Jordi Viladoms, deuxième en 2014, et du nouveau venu au sein de l’équipe autrichienne, Sam Sunderland, annoncé comme l’étoile montante de la discipline, Marc Coma, champion du monde en titre des Rallyes Raid, vise à nouveau la plus haute marche du podium pour sa 12^ème participation. « La saison a été presque parfaite, victoire au Dakar et titre de champion du monde. Je me suis prouvé que j'avais toujours la même envie de gagner et je viens sur le Dakar avec ce même état d’esprit » souligne Marc Coma. « Il y a quatre ou cinq pilotes qui peuvent prétendre à la victoire mais l’adversaire le plus dangereux c’est la course où il faut rester concentrer jusqu’à l’arrivée. »

Parmi les prétendants à la victoire, on retrouve Joan Barreda (HRC Rally – Michelin), auteur du plus grand nombre de victoires d’étape en 2014 en s’imposant à cinq reprises. Rencontrant des problèmes d’essence lors de la cinquième étape, Barreda, en tête du rallye, avait laissé filer plus de 40 minutes au profit de Coma et avait ainsi largement hypothéqué ses chances de victoire finale. Il avait rallié l’arrivée en septième position, son meilleur résultat sur le Dakar, chutant lors de l’avant-dernière étape alors qu’il occupait la deuxième place au général.

Leader de l’équipe Honda, Barreda ambitionne la victoire pour sa cinquième participation. Il pourra compter sur le soutien de ses coéquipiers, Helder Rodrigues, Paulo Goncalves, Jeremias Israel et Laia Sanz.

Troisième en 2014, Olivier Pain (Yamaha Factory Racing Team Yamalube– Michelin) fait également parti des candidats à la victoire. Sixième en 2013, le Français s’est révélé être un challenger confirmé. « Après avoir terminé successivement 28^e, 16^e, 9^e, 6^e et enfin 3^e du Dakar, mon objectif est clairement de décrocher en 2015 ma première victoire sur ce rallye mythique. »

Son coéquipier, Michael Metge, désormais libéré de son rôle de porteur d’eau de Cyril Despres, poursuivra son apprentissage pour sa quatrième participation en tentant de s’immiscer dans le Top 10.

Comme sur les deux éditions précédentes, les changements de moteur seront pénalisés, 15 minutes pour le premier changement, 45 pour le second et 2h00 pour le troisième et les suivants. Les motards devront affronter deux étapes marathon sans assistance pour rallier l’arrivée à Buenos Aires. Le vainqueur 2015 devra donc ménager sa monture et déjouer les pièges du parcours long de 9 295 km.

The chief favourite for victory on next month’s Dakar is Red Bull KTM Factory Team/Michelin’s Marc Coma, four-time winner of the event, including the 2014 edition. Arch-rival Cyril Despres has switched to four wheels with Peugeot Sport, but the Spaniard will face an armada of glory-hungry Honda riders.

After coming second behind Despres in 2012, Coma did not contest the rally in 2013, but bounced back to claim victory for the fourth time in 2014. The defending cross-country champion laid the foundations for his success by winning the fifth leg from Chilecito to Tucuman before surefootedly managing his lead until the finish in Valparaiso, Chile.

This time round, he will benefit from the assistance of loyal team-mate Jordi Viladoms (2^nd in 2014) and the Austrian squad’s new recruit, rising star Sam Sunderland.

“The 2014 season was almost perfect for me,” he says. “I won both the Dakar and the world title, which proved that I still have the winner’s instinct. I see four or five riders capable of coming first but the biggest threat will be the rally itself – it will be important to stay focused all the way to the finish.”

Coma’s biggest rivals include Joan Barreda (HRC Rally/Michelin), winner of five stages last January. He dropped more than 40 minutes with a fuel-related problem on Day 5, however, but survived to finish seventh overall, his best result on the Dakar to date from four attempts, despite a fall on the penultimate leg while in second place.

Honda’s number one representative will be able to count on the support of team-mates Helder Rodrigues, Paulo Goncalves, Jeremias Israel and Laia Sanz.

Olivier Pain, who was sixth in 2013 and third in 2014, is another potential victor. “I have finished higher and higher up the order each year and my sights are clearly on first place this time,” admits the Yamaha Factory Racing Team Yamalube/Michelin rider.

His team-mate Michael Metge, whose fate is now no longer tied to that of Cyril Despres, will continue his apprenticeship of the gruelling rally in his bid to celebrate his fourth participation with a top-10 finish.

As in 2013 and 2014, all engine changes will result in a time penalty: 15 minutes for the first change, 45 minutes for the second and two hours each for any subsequent swaps.

The bikers face two marathon legs with no outside servicing en route to the end of the 9,295km marathon in Buenos Aires.

A TT fan who makes her own nude Isle of Man calendar has been named among the ‘Hottest Women of the Week’ by men’s mag GQ.

Rachael Clegg’s ‘Milestones TT’ calendar sees the artist and journalist posing nude at various locations on the Mountain Course, with each shot intended to ‘tell a story of an event in the TT’s history’.

The 2015 calendar is the third edition.

Rachael, from Sheffield, appears on GQ’s list alongside model Daisy Lowe, Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon and Kelly Brook among others.

Rachael told Visordown: 'It was a massive surprise to be nominated one of the hottest women of the week. My only regret is not answering the phone with, "Hello, one of GQ's hottest women of the week, can I help you?"

'But on a serious note, it really made me smile and I was totally stunned, in a good way, to have made it into the shortlist.'
