Ecurie Ecosse Jaguar D-type to star at 2015 Concours of Elegance

A 1957 Jaguar D-type ‘Long Nose’ – the car that placed second at Le Mans that year behind its race-winning Ecurie Ecosse sister entrant – is the latest significant exhibit to be confirmed for the 2015 Concours of Elegance…

    Ecurie Ecosse returns home

Of course, the legendary Ecurie Ecosse racing team has its roots in Scotland – so it’s fitting that the Long Nose legend will be attendance at the country’s first Royal concours event. It’s not the only local hero to be confirmed, however: ‘Flying Scot’ Sir Jackie Stewart has also been inducted as Vice Patron of the event (alongside Patron HRH Prince Michael of Kent), and will showcase three of his F1 World Championship cars on the palace lawn. They’ll line up next to machines once driven by his countrymen Jim Clark and Johnny Dumfries, the latter represented by his 1988 Le Mans-winning Jaguar XJR-9.
The 2015 Concours of Elegance takes place at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh from 4-6 September 2015, and tickets are already on sale. In our role as Official Digital Media Partner, Classic Driver will bring you exclusive news and features in the run-up to the Royal pageant of automotive excellence, so stay tuned for more exciting insights in the coming weeks.

RM Sotheby’s to sell Ferrari California Spider at Villa Erba sale

With just four weeks to go until its Villa Erba auction during the Villa d’Este extravaganza, RM Sotheby’s has pulled off a coup: a 1961 Ferrari California Spider SWB is to headline the Canadian auction house’s lotlist…
The line-up of classic Ferraris choreographed by RM Sotheby’s for its Villa Erba auction could double up as a summary of the highpoints of the Italian marque’s history. Alongside the aforementioned Cal’ Spider, auctioneer Max Girardo will also lift the gavel on a 1950 Ferrari 195 Inter Berlinetta, a 1952 Ferrari 212 Export Barchetta, a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione, a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series II and a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso – and those are only a few of the significant Maranello machines to be offered. Also of note is a gathering of the company’s supercars, from a 288 GTO through to the Enzo; and it’s not often that a 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ doesn’t make it into the list of headline lots.

One of 16 – and possibly the best?

One of only 16 open-headlight California Spiders built, the SWB car – chassis 2505 GT – was the recipient of a recent, ‘concours-quality’ restoration at Ferrari Classiche, and was thereafter driven by the company president at the time, Luca di Montezemolo, on a parade lap at the 2010 Ferrari Challenge World Finals. It’s also been displayed at the Ferrari museum and at various events (including the 2013 Villa d’Este concours), so it’ll come as little surprise that the estimate is available on request only.

MotoGP : Pole position pour Lorenzo à Jerez / pole for Lorenzo

Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) will be on pole for the start of Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez de la Frontera, Round 4 of the 2015 MotoGP World Championship. The Spaniard established a new track lap record on his way to beating Marc Marquez (Honda Repsol) and Andrea Iannone (Ducati).
After topping all four free practice sessions, Lorenzo emerged as the man to beat in Spain when he posted a track record-beating lap-time in qualifying (1m37.910s).
Lorenzo hasn’t started a grand prix from the front of the grid since the San Marino Grand Prix in September 2014.
Marquez, who underwent surgery to a finger this week, recovered from a fall in Free Practice 4 to claim second spot with a 1m38.300s. Iannone earned his front-row start with a 1m38.468s.
Pol Espargaro (4th, Monster Yamaha Tech 3) will start from Row 2 ahead of championship leader Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP). Aleix Espargaro (Team SUZUKI ECSTAR) was 6th.
The third row will feature Cal Crutchlow (CWM LCR Honda), Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) and Yonny Hernandez (Pramac Racing).
After a tough start to the season, which has seen team-mate Valentino Rossi gain the upper hand, might Jorge Lorenzo secure his first victory of 2015 tomorrow?
