End of Day 1: Ogier – Mister 100 percent! / Etape 1 : Ogier, Monsieur 100 %
A score of two fastest stage times from two has taken Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin) into an early lead in Germany. His closest threats aren’t far behind, however, since he is joined on tonight’s provisional podium by Jari-Matti Latvala (+5.7s) and Thierry Neuville (+12.7s).
On dirt, snow and asphalt, Sébastien Ogier is clearly in his element whatever the type of rally.
With his Volkswagen Polo R WRC running on hard-compound Michelin Pilot Sport ‘H2’ tyres, the Frenchman was in dominating form on the first two stages of the 2013 season’s first pure asphalt round. “My objective was to be in the lead this evening in order to have a good road order on Friday. SS1 was difficult and I honestly didn’t think my time would be so competitive. There was more grip on the second stage.”
Despite the fact that this is Volkswagen Motorsport’s first sealed-surface rally, the German make sits in overnight first and second positions thanks to Jari-Matti Latvala who is just 5.7 seconds behind his team-mate. As expected, Belgium’s Thierry Neuville (Qatar WRT Ford Fiesta RS WRC) is up there with the leaders, too, in third place (+12.7s). “We all suffered from understeer today and the stages were very dirty for us. My driving wasn’t perfect and I don’t think I could have been faster than Ogier.”
The Michelin-equipped factory Citroën DS3 WRCs are just shy of this evening’s top three in the hands of Spain’s Dani Sordo (+20.5s) and Finn Mikko Hirvonen (+25.7s). “I think I will feel more comfortable on tomorrow’s stages which I know better,” predicted Sordo. Mads Ostberg (6th, +30.6s) is the only Qatar M-Sport WRT driver still in the running after team-mate Evgeny Novikov went off on SS1, like last year.
Poland’s Robert Kubica (Citroën DS3 RRC/Michelin) is dominating the WRC-2 class and is 10thoverall on tonight’s leaderboard. He is 14.9s clear of Elfyn Evans (Ford Fiesta R5), while Sepp Wiegand is a further 8.3s adrift in his Skoda Fabia S2000. Robert Barrable (Fiesta R5) was stopped by a radiator problem and Kruuda (Fiesta R5) went little further than the start ramp in Cologne. Frenchman Sébastien Chardonnet and Germany’s Christian Riedemann Gilbert were today’s WRC-3 pace-setters.
Everybody is saying that ‘real’ rally will begin on Friday when crews face six classic stages through the Mosel valley vineyards. There is a chance the weather could deteriorate, which means the rain expected on Saturday could arrive early and make tyre choices an added complexity for the teams.
JAGUAR PROJECT 7 CONCEPT
- POSTED BY MOTO VERSO
“When you look at this car, it has got an enormous amount of appeal. It’s just full of desire – you can see that its sole purpose is to be enjoyed. Project 7 is a very special car – not just because it’s a one-off, but because of its purity of purpose. It’s pure Jaguar.”
Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar
Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar
Project 7 – based on the acclaimed F-TYPE and produced to showcase the creativity of Jaguar’s design and engineering teams – made its dynamic debut at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed on 12th July. The name acknowledges Jaguar’s seven victories at Le Mans between 1951and 1990; its striking blue paintwork is reminiscent of the victorious Jaguar D-types of 1956 and1957.
Although it is not intended for production, Project 7 is not merely a static concept, but a fully-functional, high-performance sports car. F-TYPE’s rigid all-aluminium architecture is the perfect starting point, with power provided by the 550PS version of Jaguar’s 5.0 Litre V8 Supercharged engine – an increase of 55PS over the F-TYPE V8 S.
In addition to the increase in power – delivered through Jaguar’s 8-speed Quickshift automatic transmission and Electronic Active Differential – Project 7 also features a free-flow exhaust system with a ceramic finish, 10mm lower ride height and a unique spring/damper tune.
The unique exterior celebrates Jaguar’s sporting bloodline. F-TYPE’s two key ‘heartlines’ remain, with the most prominent change being the D-type-inspired rear fairing section that incorporates a rollover hoop and swoops down from behind the driver’s head. The roof system has been completely removed.
Aerodynamic modifications include a carbon fibre front splitter, side skirts, large rear diffuser and a fixed rear spoiler with a 14-degree angle of attack, giving Project 7 a low, unified, muscular stance. The side louvres and bonnet vents are also carbon fibre, while the carbon fibre and aluminium wing mirrors draw inspiration from those on Jaguar’s C-X16 sports car concept, from which F-TYPE is derived.
The windshield has been lowered, while a new nose design incorporates revised air intakes and headlights with gloss black surrounds instead of chrome. The car sits on 20 inch Blade forged-alloy wheels with carbon fibre inserts.
The cockpit of Project 7 is no less impressive than its exterior. The driver sits in a composite bucket seat, lowered by 30mm, and is gripped by a four-point racing harness. The passenger seat is replaced by a unique helmet holder, which carries a custom-designed Project 7 helmet in matching blue paint and graphics, secured by its own harness.
The seat and the insides of the doors are finished in a quilted racing-style diamond pattern. There are carbon fibre inserts on the console and SportShift selector, the start-stop button is gloss black and the steering wheel is equipped with machined aluminium paddles.
Saleen Mustang George Follmer Edition
Saleen used the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca Raceway to unveil the first model in their Heritage Collection. This mean looking machine is named afterGeorge Follmer, a racing driver from the 1970s who competed in a wide variety of cars including NASCAR stock cars, Formula One machinery with the Shadow team, sports car in Can-Am and IndyCars at the Indianapolis 500.
The styling for this machine takes its cue from the Boss 302 race car that Follmer drove in 1969. The 1960s racing car was displayed right next to the Saleen so visitors to the Motorsports Reunion in Monterey could see for themselves the three-tone livery, air scoops and 302 badges that distinguish this limited edition from other Saleen modified Ford Mustangs. The new 19-inch wheels have been included to reflect the 1960s era that the car draws its inspiration from, but they aren’t newly designed as we’ve been them before on other Saleen machines.
Under the bonnet there’s a V-8 that boosts power to 470bhp thanks to a cold air intake, a remapped ECU and a new throttle body. With race-tuned suspension this Mustang gets over the problems that standard Mustangs have of developing too little mechanical grip for the horsepower. This GF Edition Mustang is scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2014.
Saleen Heritage Collection will eventually include machines honouring Swede Savage and Mark Donohue, although neither cars will be based on the Ford Mustang. Saleen used the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion to announce the Swede Savage Edition Barracuda and the Mark Donohue Edition Camaro.

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in pictures
In contrast to the leisurely gatherings on the green of ‘The Quail’ and the Pebble Beach Concours, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca is the home of testosterone, wailing machinery and heroic dives through the ‘Corkscrew’. We bring you some of the most memorable moments...
Legend of 'The Bullet'
We did not make an Independence Day special featurette.
We haven't glorified our country, nor its products, nor its People, and this Independence day, we are not glorifying or luring any particular motoring enthusiast either, and that's for a simple reason!
For a true motoring enthusiast, when that ignition key is turned to "ON, there is just that one feeling in their mind. The true Independence. To do what they want, to be what they want. To fly free.. If there is anything as symbolic and as relevant to Independence, then it is this "Indian" The Royal Enfield Bullet.
With a history older than that of free India, a "Legend" that has aspired many a Indians to live free, ride free.
A legend that many look up to as "Symbolic" of a free bird.
A legend that keeps on going, breaks down too, but in true essence of Independence, its fans love dirtying their hands to get it back running....

PIRANHA BUGGY BY EDGE
The Piranha Buggy is an offroad racing buggy designed by Edge specifically to be built by regular people, in their garages. The buggy comes in both kit and plan form, with the plans option giving you the chance to buy separate pieces from the kit, that you don’t have the time to build/weld yourself.
We featured the Barracuda Buggy by Edge last month and it proved to be very popular, the Piranha is quite similar to the Barracuda but it’s been formulated to be much easier and quicker to build. The chassis and suspension elements are easier to build (and cheaper to buy), the rack and pinion steering comes right off a road car and the engine options all fall into the slightly more affordable price bracket.
It’s possible to pick up a 500-1000cc motorcycle engine relatively cheaply in most parts of the world, generally speaking you’ll want to look for a wrecked bike that doesn’t have any engine damage. Once you’ve got your donor you can figure out your engine mounts and begin the process of welding the steel chassis together.
The weight of the Piranha (with engine fitted) is in the region of 375kgs, depending on your engine choices you’ll have a top speed of between 120 and 150kph and a 0-100kph time of ~5.5 seconds. Doing 120+kph on dirt is an experience that’ll leave the whites of your eyes visible from low Earth orbit, it’s also a hell of a lot of fun.
If you’ve been looking for a project that’ll give you an excuse to drink beer in the garage with friends whilst using tools, the Piranha might be just what you need.

'65 Triumph TR6SC - Retro Wrench
There's a lot of talk of ‘barn finds’ in the bike restoration scene; that mythical, magical moment that happens once in a lifetime (if you're lucky) where you stumble upon a bike lost to the world that turns out to be the last of its kind in existence. And then you win the Lotto twice in the same day and become the President of the World. That's right... chances are it'll never happen. The more likely scenario is that your dream bike is a basket case that's been abused beyond all recognition by an army of previous bad taste owners and you're the only one who sees the diamond in the (chopper) rough. Because that's exactly what happened to Donny Greene and the lads at Retro Wrench in Louisville, Kentucky.
As with most of bikers, the Retro Wrench boys obviously keep a close eye on the classifieds. A typical neglected project chopper/digger project popped up on Craigslist and the emails amongst them began to fly. It was exactly the build they had been waiting for. They ended up with a 1965 Triumph TR6 that hadn’t run since the early 90’s. Upon further inspection, they found matching serial numbers that showed it was a limited edition “SC” racer also known as the “Desert Sled”, built at Johnson Motors in Southern California and TriCor in Baltimore.
The first order of business was removing the Harley peanut tank and ape hanger handlebars and getting it back to its racing roots. So Matt Westbrook, James Kemp and Chad Francis from the Retro team went to work. The bike came equipped with a belt driven ARD magneto and with a little tinkering, a few parts and a complete rewire the electrical system was back up and running without the battery one of the previous owners had installed.
The focus then moved to the motor. Despite their worst fears of metal shavings and siezed internals, the antique lump was in much better condition than they had expected. With the carbs rebuilt, gaskets replaced, a bunch of TLC and a couple of tickles later… she was ready and running.
Meanwhile, shop fabricator Brad White aka the ‘WhiteNoiseMaker’ was busy, too. With his eyes on a suitable tank replacement, he started with a Yamaha T1 gas tank which was narrowed by an inch and a half, cut on the bottom to clear the engine and frenched for fuel sight glasses down each side. Then the ACME cartoon bomb oil tank (formerly an aircraft fire extinguisher) was shaved of all gauges and brackets, cut and welded back together to clear the fender and chain. The stainless wick was conceived by Louisville chopper legend, Jinx.
Remarkably, the paint was also done in house at Retro Wrench Garage, with cups and cups of pearl in the clear coat while Josh at Culver Customs laid down the tasteful pinstripes. The bars were dropped beneath the shortened girder forks and cut narrow for lane splitting. The 21" dirt bike front wheel and knobby continue the digger look.
The finishing touches included the seat and fender, which were built to accent the bike's original old school sissy bar. With all the compression and subsequent giddy-up of a bona fide desert racer, the bike is aptly referred to by the Retro Wrenchers as the “F-Bomb”. The end result is a vintage bike with great lines and a silhouette as evil as Electric Wizard sounds. And as someone who's just heard them for the first time, that's really saying something.

Cologne – Germany’s automotive and media city / Cologne : l’automobile et les medias
This year’s Rallye Deutschland has deserted Trier’s Porta Negra Roman monument as its start venue. Instead, competitors on the ninth round of the 2013 World Rally Championship will be flagged away from Cologne, Germany’s fourth biggest city. It also one of the country’s major automotive and media capitals.
Le départ de l’ADAC Rallye Deutschland 2013 ne sera pas donné devant la Porta Nigra de Trèves, mais à Cologne, la quatrième plus grande ville allemande, une des capitales de l’automobile et des médias germaniques.
Holding the start of the Rallye Deutschland in Cologne is symbolically appropriate for several reasons. First of all, it is situated reasonably close to the rally’s traditional base, Trier, and its geographical location made it easy to incorporate two stages on Thursday evening’s drive back to the service park.
Also, Cologne is indisputably Germany’s number one media city, with the vast majority of the national TV and radio broadcasters based there.
More significantly, however, it is the country’s second or third most important regions for the country’s automobile industry.
Ford Europe is located there and has extensive manufacturing facilities, for example, while a long list of importers have established their German or European headquarters in or near Cologne. The list includes Citroën, Peugeot (which recently moved from the Saarland region), Toyota, Lexus, Mazda, Volvo, Renault and Nissan.
Meanwhile, Toyota Motorsport runs its Le Mans 24 Hours and FIA World Endurance Championship operations out of Marsdorf, a suburb.
The spot chosen for the start of the 2013 Rallye Deutschland is the -Roncalliplatz, a spacious plaza just in front of Cologne’s main railway station and at the foot of the huge cathedral. The ‘Kölner Dom’ is an outstanding gothic monument which dates back to the 13th Century and is said to be the most popular tourist site in Germany (20,000 visitors a day).
There is a story at Ford in Cologne that one day, not so long ago, a senior executive visiting from Ford America was asked if he was impressed by the cathedral. “Sure, it’s a nice church,” he answered, “but I don’t understand why they decided to build it so close to the railway station…”
Perhaps someone thought it would make life easier for the tourists!
