The Factory 5 GTM Supercar is the American answer to the highly-acclaimed, British made Ultima GTR. Both are kit built supercars with a mid-mounted engine, space-frame chassis, fibreglass body shell and a top speed that’ll make your eyes water. Both cars are capable, rather easily, of embarrassing any supercar you throw at them and both can be built for a relatively paltry sum (if you compare price tags with the Ferrari Enzos of the world).
The basic Factory 5 GTM kit costs $20,990 USD, once you have it you’ll need to source a 1997-2004 Chevrolet C5 Corvette as an engine/suspension donor and get your hands on either a Porsche G50 or a Mendeola 5 speed transmission. Factory 5 says that the average build time for the GTM is about 600 hours and the average total cost is about $50,000 USD depending on the final specifications that you choose and how cheaply you can source a C5.
The performance specifications of the GTM were tested by Car and Driver Magazine in 2007, the GTM had a recorded 0-60 time of 3.0 seconds and a 1/4 mile time of 11.0 seconds (with a 450 hp engine installed).
If you’ve been looking for a winter project and you’ve got access to an old C5 Corvette, you might want to click the link and visit the official Factory 5 website here.
