Two in a row for Ogier and VW/Michelin / Deux à la suite pour Ogier et VW/Michelin

After his win in Sweden last month, Sébastien Ogier added another victory to his record and provided the new Polo R WRC with its first success on gravel. Mikko Hirvonen clinched second for Citroën, while Thierry Neuville (Ford) claimed the first WRC podium finish of his career.

Vainqueur en Suède le mois dernier, le Français Sébastien Ogier a ajouté une nouvelle victoire à son palmarès et offert le premier succès sur terre à la nouvelle Polo R WRC équipée des nouveaux pneumatiques Michelin Latitude Cross H2/S2. Mikko Hirvonen a assuré la deuxième place pour Citroën, devant Thierry Neuville (Ford) qui a signé son premier podium mondial.

It was in 2008 that Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia celebrated their WRC debut with a ‘Junior’ win in Mexico, driving a Citroën C2. Five years and 60 world class outings later, the Frenchmen picked up their ninth outright win in the new Polo R WRC/Michelin.

Despite an early off for Jari-Matti Latvala (16^th), who broke a suspension arm on SS3, it was a successful gravel debut for Volkswagen Motorsport, with Ogier winning 16 of the 23 stages to beat Mikko Hirvonen by a margin of 3m28.9s.

With Sébastien Loeb not present in Mexico, Citroën-Total Abu Dhabi’s Mikko Hirvonen delivered by finishing second, although he was helped by Mads Ostberg’s alternator failure after SS14. The Norwegian (11^th) had succeeded in matching Ogier’s pace early on and even led briefly on Friday morning in his Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

Although he failed to steal second place from Mikko Hirvonen on the last day, Thierry Neuville was pleased with his first ever world class podium finish in his Qatar WRT Ford Fiesta. His team-late Nasser Al-Attiyah marked his return to the championship with fifth overall, behind Spaniard Dani Sordo (Citroën DS3 WRC/Michelin).

Chris Atkinson, who was standing in for Khalid Al-Qassimi in the N°10 Citroën DS3 WRC, was sixth overall despite hitting a stone and losing time on Day 1. The Australian finished clear of the Ken Block (7^th) and Mexico’s Benito Guerra (8^th) who was competing in a World Rally Car for the very first time. The top 10 was rounded off by Martin Prokop (Ford) and Evgeny Novikov (Ford/Michelin) who was delayed by an ECU problem.

In the Manufacturers’ championship, Citroën-Total Abu Dhabi WRT (87 points) has extended its advantage over Volkswagen Motorsport (81), while Qatar M-Sport WRT (37) is third, just ahead the other Qatar team (35). In the Drivers’ standings, Ogier – who also won the Power Stage, ahead of Ostberg and Latvala – has pulled out a gap of 44 points over Hirvonen after just three rallies.

The WRC2 contest was dominated by Qatar’s Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta RRC/Michelin Sport. The Seashore Qatar Rally Team driver finished clear of Peru’s Nicolas Fuchs (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX) and Mexican Ricardo Trivino (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X) who lost ground with brake trouble. Lorenzo Bertelli (Subaru) was side-lined on Day 2 (fuel tank), while Armin Kremer (4^th) and Yurii Protasov (5^th) also had troubled runs in their respective Subarus. Costa Rica’s José Montalto, who is not registered for the championship, was third in Group N in his Stohl Racing-run Subaru.



C’est au Mexique, en 2008, que Sébastien Ogier et Julien Ingrassia avaient débuté leur carrière en WRC (par une victoire) au volant d’une Citroën C2 en Championnat Junior. Cinq ans et 60 rallyes plus tard, Sébastien et Julien ont remporté leur 9^e succès mondial au volant de la nouvelle Polo R WRC.

Malgré le retrait de Jari-Matti Latvala (16^e) suite à une touchette dans l’ES3 (bras de suspension cassé), l’équipe Volkswagen Motorsport n’a pas manqué son premier rendez-vous sur terre. Ogier a remporté 16 des 23 spéciales du rallye pour s’imposer à Leon avec 3min28s9 d’avance sur Mikko Hirvonen.

En l’absence de Sébastien Loeb ce week-end, le pilote Citroën-Total Abu Dhabi Mikko Hirvonen a « fait le job » en terminant deuxième, bien aidé en cela par le retrait de Mads Ostberg avant l’ES15 (alternateur). Le Norvégien (11^e) avait été le seul à suivre le rythme du Français en début de rallye, au point de prendre la tête à l’issue de l’ES4 sur sa Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

Thierry Neuville n’a pas réussi à prendre la 2^e place à Mikko Hirvonen au cours de la dernière étape. Le Belge signe néanmoins son premier podium mondial au volant de la Ford Fiesta du Qatar WRT. Son équipier Nasser Al-Attiyah a pris la 5^e place finale pour son retour en WRC derrière l’Espagnol Dani Sordo (Citroën DS3 WRC/Michelin).

Au championnat Constructeurs, Citroën-Total Abu Dhabi WRT (87 pts) augmente son avance sur Volkswagen Motorsport (81 pts). Qatar M-Sport WRT est 3^e avec 37 pts, juste devant l’autre équipe du Qatar (35 pts). Chez les Pilotes, Ogier – qui a aussi remporté la Power Stage devant Ostberg et Latvala - compte désormais 44 pts d’avance sur Hirvonen après trois rallyes.

En WRC2, le Qatari Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari a nettement dominé cette épreuve au volant de sa Ford Fiesta RRC/Michelin préparée par M-Sport. Le pilote Seashore Qatar Rally Team s’est imposé devant le Péruvien Nicolas Fuchs (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX) et le Mexicain Ricardo Trivino (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X) retardé par des ennuis de freins. Lorenzo Bertelli (Subaru) a dû se retirer le 2^e jour (réservoir d’essence), Armin Kremer (4^e, Subaru) a connu un souci de bras de direction arrière et Yurii Protasov (Subaru, 5^e) a effectué une touchette dimanche matin. Non inscrit au championnat, le Costaricain José Montalto a terminé sur le podium de la catégorie Gr.N sur sa Subaru assistée par le team Stohl Racing.
