The Goodwood Festival of Speed is synonymous with motor racing, even though the event has morphed into an outdoors motor show where car manufacturers unveil their latest creations. Events like the Wacky Races we brought you earlier have also changed the festival’s image but at its core it remains a celebration of motor sport.
This year’s edition saw a wide collection of racing cars from different disciplines take to the famous hill climb course. Rally cars like the Audi Quattro seen in our lead image and aCitroen DS3 World Rally Car, which Finnish rally star Mikko Hirvonenn put through its paces at the Forest Rally Stage at the Festival of Speed, were a big part of the event. A Colin McRae Subaru Impreza 555 from 1994 took a lot of attention not only because of the famous name above the driver’s door but also because the car’s owner Sir Chris Hoy was behind the wheel.
The pinnacle of motorsport, Formula One, was represented by 7 current teams and a host of historic machinery. Caterham, Ferrari, Lotus, McLaren, Marussia, Mercedes and Red Bull were all in attendance this year bringing along drivers like Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Historic Formula One cars included a McLaren MP4/9 from 1994, a Benetton B192 from 1992 and a host of McLarens. The British F1 constructor brought the first car to win a World Championship, the 1974 M23 of Emerson Fittipaldi, and their latest championship winning car, Lewis Hamilton’s MP4-23 from 2008.
The record setters for the hill climb were also from motor racing. Gregory Gilvert took a Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak up the hill climb course in 45.86 seconds to tie for the event’s fastest time with ex-Formula One driver Nick Heidfeld in a Lola-Toyota B12/60.
