Having claimed his own 50th career win the previous time out at Phillip Island, Lorenzo’s Motegi success marked his 30th in the premier class as well as the 200th for Yamaha, whose first as a company in the premier class came courtesy of Britain’s Chas Mortimer in the 1973 Spanish Grand Prix at Montjuic Park, Barcelona.
Naturally, a wide range of famous names have contributed to the two centuries of race successes, including Giacomo Agostini who collected six victories for Yamaha en route to his final title in 1975. Later on, Americans made a significant input in the form of Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson and Wayne Rainey.
Italians Luca Cadalora and Max Biaggi added to the tally; ironically, Biaggi would often be challenged by Valentino Rossi, who would join Yamaha in 2004. No less than 49 of the most recent 50 wins have come courtesy of either Rossi or Lorenzo, with the only exception being the Dutch TT of 2011 which was won by Ben Spies.
“It's a very special day and to be the rider to get the 200 wins is a great honour,” Lorenzo proudly stated at Twin Ring Motegi. “To win at Honda’s home race is even more special! It was a very difficult race today; they were very close but I never gave up and tried to be even faster, braking harder and opening the gap more. Finally I was able to make a little gap. We are very proud of this victory: for the result, for the circumstances and for the championship. It couldn’t be better.”
“It’s absolutely fantastic to be able to celebrate our 200th Grand Prix victory here in Japan at our home race, with such an incredible performance from Jorge Lorenzo,” added Lin Jarvis, Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing.
“He totally dominated, not just the weekend but also the race under extreme pressure from his rivals. I’d like to say thanks to all of the riders and teams and all of the sponsors and partners and everyone involved in bringing us these memorable victories over the years. May we go on to 201 in Valencia!”
The success marked Yamaha’s seventh win of the 2013 season.
“We can be very proud and happy to witness this incredible achievement here in Motegi,” commented Kouichi Tsuji, General Manager of Yamaha Motor Company’s Motorsport Development Division. “Jorge delivered a perfect performance to give us our 200th Grand Prix victory, continuing in the long tradition of success that we have enjoyed now since 1972. For Yamaha it is also very special to be able to enjoy this victory here in Japan for our home Grand Prix.”
The 2013 MotoGP™ season now rolls on to the Valencia season-closer on 10 November, in which Lorenzo will challenge for a third riders’ world title.
Après avoir atteint le cap des 50 victoires en Grand Prix dimanche dernier à Phillip Island, Jorge Lorenzo s’est offert un 30ème succès en MotoGP™ sept jours plus tard au Motegi, signant au passage la 200ème victoire de Yamaha dans la catégorie reine depuis celle du Britannique Chas Mortimer au Grand Prix d’Espagne tenu au Montjuic Park, à Barcelone, en 1973.
Parmi les pilotes qui ont contribué à ces 200 victoires se retrouvent plusieurs légendes du motocyclisme telles que Giacomo Agostini, qui avait remporté six victoires pour Yamaha lors de la conquête de son dernier titre, en 1975. La marque aux trois diapasons a plus tard aussi pu compter sur les talents américains et notamment Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson ou encore Wayne Rainey.
Les Italiens Luca Cadalora et Max Biaggi, ancien rival de Valentino Rossi, font aussi partie des contributeurs. Pas moins de 49 des 50 dernières victoires du constructeur ont été remportées par Lorenzo et Rossi, à l’exception de celle du TT Assen de 2011, décrochée par l’Américain Ben Spies.
« C’est un jour très spécial et être le pilote qui remporte la 200ème victoire est un grand honneur, » a déclaré Lorenzo après sa superbe course au Twin Ring Motegi. « La remporter chez Honda la rend encore plus particulière ! Aujourd’hui la course a été très difficile. Les autres étaient juste derrière moi mais je n’ai rien lâché et j’ai essayé de toujours être plus rapide, plus fort sur les freinages et de creuser l’écart. Finalement, j’ai réussi. Nous sommes très fiers de cette victoire, pour le résultat, les circonstances et pour le championnat. Ça ne pouvait pas être mieux. »
« C’est absolument fantastique de fêter notre 200ème victoire en Grand Prix ici au Japon, à domicile, avec une incroyable performance de la part de Jorge Lorenzo, » a ajouté Lin Jarvis, le directeur général de Yamaha Factory Racing.
« Il a complètement dominé, pas seulement le week-end mais surtout une course dans laquelle il avait beaucoup de pression. Avec sept victoires de Lorenzo et une de Rossi, Yamaha compte désormais huit victoires en 2013.
« Nous pouvons être très fiers et très heureux d’avoir été témoins de cet incroyable accomplissement ici à Motegi, » a commenté Kouichi Tsuji, le directeur général de la Division Motorsport Development de Yamaha Motor Company. « Jorge a réalisé une course parfaite pour nous offrir notre 200ème victoire, poursuivant une tradition et une réussite que nous connaissons depuis 1972. C’était aussi très spécial pour Yamaha de fêter cette victoire ici au Japon pour notre Grand Prix national. »
La saison MotoGP™ 2013 se terminera le 10 novembre à Valence, où Lorenzo tentera de décrocher tant bien que mal un troisième titre mondial.
