The 2013 world champion Sébastien Ogier rounded off 2013 with his ninth victory of the year on Wales Rally GB, taking Volkswagen/Michelin’s score to 10 wins from 13 rounds! The Frenchman’s speed frustrated the bid of team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala (2nd, +21.8s) to make it three Rally GB wins in a row. Podium honours sufficed for Thierry Neuville (Ford, +1m24.5s) to come second in this season’s WRC. The first prize in the WRC-2 and WRC-3 classes went to Elfyn Evans (Ford) and Quentin Gilbert (Citroën) respectively.

‘Great Orme’ is a stunningly beautiful stage, set to the backdrop of the Irish Sea. It’s a bright, wind-free, almost warm day by the seaside and this is an idyllic backdrop to end the 2013 World Rally Championship.

The peaceful Sunday day-tripper routine in Llandudno – a short walk from the stage – is broken only by the sirens of the various safety cars as they drive through the weekend’s 22^nd stage to make sure spectators are standing in a safe spot. “Most of them are on high ground. That’s where they’ll get the best views from,” reports the driver of the ‘double zero’ car.

This is their last opportunity to watch the WRC stars in action and, all too soon, the show is over as the front-runners reach us at the finish control, in reverse order…

After appearing as a potential threat to Neuville on Saturday, Andreas Mikkelsen was kicking himself for his two spins this morning. They effectively ruined Volkswagen Motorsport’s hopes of a one-two-three finish in Wales to round off its polished maiden campaign at world level.

They also took pressure off Mads Ostberg who concluded a season of ups and downs with a commendable fourth place. On the stop line of SS22, he confirmed he had a strong chance of a drive in 2014, but didn’t specify the team. However, the Norwegian’s last-day speed, assisted by a softer set-up, was insufficient to deprive fellow Qatar M-Sport runner Neuville of a podium finish.

Meanwhile, third spot after a maturely-paced performance was enough for the Belgian to pocket 2013’s silver medal, ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala. It was an emotional moment as the Ford driver’s friends and family greeted him with champagne at the end of SS22. “At the beginning of the season, with a new car and a new team, I couldn’t have imagined coming second in the championship,” he admitted.

Latvala had been hoping to win Britain’s round of the WRC for a third straight year and was doubly disappointed to have to settle for third in the Driver’s standings. “I made too many small mistakes this weekend,” he admitted. “I have the speed, but I need to work on finding a rhythm next season.”

Unsurprisingly, the man everyone was waiting for at the end of ‘Great Orme’ was Sébastien Ogier who wrapped up the year with a convincing win. “It’s amazing. I’m so happy,” he said after posing for pictures on the roof of his Polo R WRC/Michelin. “My car was perfect again, so thanks to the team for that; and we had a great battle with our team-mate this weekend. Fantastique! It’s the perfect end to a perfect season!”

Moments later, it was Elfyn Evan’s turn to celebrate after securing a surefooted success in the WRC-2 class for Ford on his home event, while Frenchman Quentin Gilbert (Citroën) claimed an assertive victory in WRC-3.

Pour sa première saison mondiale, la Volkswagen Polo R WRC/Michelin a remporté dix victoires en treize rallyes. Thierry Neuville (Ford) est une nouvelle fois monté sur le podium. Les catégories WRC-2 et WRC-3 ont été remportées par Elfyn Evans (Ford) et Quentin Gilbert (Citroën).

« Great Orme » est une spéciale absolument magnifique qui longe la Mer d’Irlande et il fait presque beau pour cette dernier grand moment de la saison 2013. C’est un dimanche paisible à Llandudno, dont le centre-ville va accueillir le podium du Wales Rally GB. Seules les sirènes des voitures ouvreuses semblent troubler la quiétude environnante. « Les spectateurs sont haut perchés. Ils ont une vue imprenable sur la spéciale », rapportait le pilote de la voiture 00.

Très vite, les premiers concurrents en terminent avec cette 22^e spéciale du Wales Rally GB, après avoir parcouru l’ES19 Clocaenoog (Power Stage, remportée par Neuville) et les deux Superspéciales de Kinmel Park.

Andreas Mikkelsen (VW), qui lorgnait sur la 3^e place de Thierry Neuville, a effectué deux tête-à-queue aujourd’hui et perdu tout espoir de monter sur le podium, privant également Volkswagen d’un possible triplé qui aurait ponctué une première saison mondiale fantastique pour la marque allemande.

Ces deux petites fautes ont également permis à Mads Ostberg de souffler un peu en fin de parcours, assuré de la 4^e place. A l’arrivée de l’ES22, le pilote Ford confirmait qu’il avait de bonnes chances d’être de la partie en 2014, sans vouloir spécifier ni l’équipe, ni la voiture…

Malgré des réglages plus « soft » et une confiance retrouvée, Mads Ostberg n’a pu déloger son équipier Thierry Neuville de la 3^e place du général, suffisante pour assurer au Belge le titre de vice-champion du monde 2013 devant Jari-Matti Latvala. A l’arrivée de la dernière spéciale, ses amis et sa famille lui ont offert un accueil des plus chaleureux : « En début de saison, avec une nouvelle voiture et un nouveau team, je n’aurais jamais imaginé finir 2^e du championnat », avouait le Belge, sûr de son avenir chez Hyundai.

Latvala espérait bien s’imposer pour la 3^e fois d’affilée au Pays de Galles, et ne cachait pas sa déception de terminer 3^e du championnat : « J’ai fait trop de petites erreurs ce week-end. J’avais la vitesse, mais je dois encore travailler pour trouver de la constance la saison prochaine. »

Sans surprises, l’homme que tout le monde attendait à l’arrivée de « Great Orme » était Sébastien Ogier, vainqueur pour la 9^e fois de la saison sur sa Volkswagen Polo R WRC/Michelin. « C’est incroyable, je suis vraiment très heureux », a déclaré le Français en sautant du toit de sa voiture. « La voiture était encore une fois parfaite, un grand merci au team, et c’était une belle bagarre avec Jari-Matti. Fantastique. C’est juste une parfaite conclusion à une parfaite saison. »

Quelques instants plus tard, Elfyn Evans est lui aussi monté sur le toit de sa Ford Fiesta R5/Michelin pour fêter sa victoire en catégorie WRC-2, alors que le Français Quentin Gilbert (Citroën DS3 R3) est resté plus modéré pour exprimer sa joie de remporter une seconde victoire d’affilée en catégorie WRC-3. Peu après, Sébastien Chardonnet a hurlé de plaisir en franchissant l’arrivée du Wales Rally GB 2013 en vainqueur du Citroën Top Driver.
