Citroën opts for Meeke and Ostberg / Citroën choisit Meeke et Ostberg

Citroën Total Abu Dhabi WRT’s two drivers for the 2014 FIA World Rally Championship will be Briton Kris Meeke and Norway’s Mads Ostberg.

Le Britannique Kris Meeke et le Norvégien Mads Ostberg piloteront les Citroën DS3 WRC/Michelin du team officiel Citroën Total Abu Dhabi WRT en Championnat du monde des Rallyes FIA 2014.

The day before it was due to start testing for the Rallye Monte Carlo, the French firm announced that its crews for next year’s WRC will be Kris Meeke/Paul Nagle and Mads Ostberg/Jonas Andersson. Its contracts with Mikko Hirvonen and Dani Sordo have not been extended.

Kris Meeke, 34, will contest the entire championship in a factory Citroën DS3 WRC. He made his debut in the sport in 2003 driving an Opel Corsa S1600 and joined Citroën’s ranks the following year in the Junior Championship with a C2 S1600. He then stayed with the PSA Group but switched to an Intercontinental Rally Challenge programme driving a Peugeot 207 S2000. He claimed the title in 2009 before being recruited to drive one of the factory Minis.

He returned to the PSA camp in 2013 and took part in the development of the new Peugeot R5, in addition to contesting two rounds of the WRC in a Citroën DS3 WRC (France and Australia). He was running strongly before being eliminated by crashes both times.

Mads Ostberg, 26, was in contact with Citroën for 2013 but chose to stay another full year at M-Sport, with whom he collected two podium finishes. His record to date includes one victory (Portugal 2012) and seven top-three finishes from 65 appearances since 2006.

Like this year, Khalid Al-Qassimi will take part in selected rounds driving a Citroën DS3 WRC (Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Spain). He will also compete in the Middle East championship.

A la veille du début des tests « Monte-Carlo », l’équipe huit fois championne du monde WRC a officialisé ses deux nouveaux équipages 2014 : Kris Meeke/Paul Nagle et Mads Ostberg/Jonas Andersson. Les contrats de Mikko Hirvonen et Dani Sordo ne sont donc pas reconduits.

A 34 ans, Kris Meeke pilotera une Citroën DS3 WRC officielle sur l’ensemble du championnat 2014. Après des débuts mondiaux en 2003 sur une Opel Corsa S1600, le Britannique avait rejoint les rangs de Citroën l’année suivante en championnat Junior sur une C2 S1600. Il est ensuite resté dans le giron du Groupe PSA pour un programme en Intercontinental Rally Challenge sur une Peugeot 207 S2000. Il fut titré en 2009, avant de revenir en WRC sur une Mini John Cooper Works officielle.

De retour chez PSA l’an passé, Meeke a participé au développement de la Peugeot R5 et a disputé deux épreuves mondiales sur une Citroën DS3 WRC, le Rallye de Finlande et le Rallye d’Australie, où il a brillé à chaque fois avant de sortir de la route.

Mads Ostberg (26 ans) était déjà en contact avec Citroën pour la saison 2013. Le Norvégien rejoint finalement les « Rouges » après une année supplémentaire passée chez M-Sport où il a disputé la saison complète et signé deux podiums. Mads compte une victoire mondiale (Portugal 2012) et sept podiums pour 65 départs depuis 2006.

Comme l’an passé, Khalid Al-Qassimi participera à quelques épreuves mondiales au volant d’une Citroën DS3 WRC (Suède, Portugal, Italie, Espagne) et disputera le championnat du Moyen-Orient.
