1994 BMW R1100RS custom cafe racer
Found on Ebay, the current owner claims about 400lbs for this 90hp smart contemporary beemer. Despite its ugly Telelever, this bike is to me an interesting solution to recover an unsightly tourer from the 90's and to suggest a new wave of reliable street legal BMW custom. More details i the rest of this post.
Starting with a 1994 R1100RS with some 26,000 miles, this bike was completely rebuilt incorporating a new customized gas tank, frame, seat, fairing and suspension. Apparently, the bike had been in storage off and on for many years with the original owner rarely riding it. During that time some parts like seat, fairing and gas tank were damaged. The current owner says he purchased the bike in that condition and decided to modify it as he believes that the original RS is too heavy. According to him, after the modifications, the bike is over 110 lbs lighter.
Main specs. Custom stainless steel exhaust system. New gas tank: shell from a 70’s R90S; new custom tank built underneath to allow room for the stock computer and fuel pump. Carbon fibre front fender. ABS brake system removed together with related brake pipes and wiring with a claimed saving of over 35-40 lbs. Original Bosch fuel injection. New custom subframe and seat (claimed weight saving of about 42 lbs). Simplified wiring. New electronic tachometer. Bilstein front end shock with a higher rate spring was fitted and now the handling is awesome. Brembo brakes with braided steel brake hoses.
