Despite its enviable record in motorsport, this will be Ford’s first involvement in the Dakar. The brand’s effort is being led by its South African subsidiary which has entered Ford Racing Ranger T1s for Lucio Alvarez and Chris Wisser.

As was the case with Toyota’s entry in 2012, it is Ford’s South African importer which is behind the Blue Oval’s Dakar involvement.
The Racing Ranger T1 was built and developed by the highly experienced Pietermaritzburg-based Neil Woolridge Motorsport operation, with support from Ford Special Vehicles Team in Detroit. Two cars ran successfully in the 2013 South African off-road championship.
Special attention has been paid to the chassis which features some 1,600 components and advanced materials like chrome-molybdenum and Domex. Two of the four T1s that exist are contesting the Dakar in the hands of Argentina’s Lucio Alvarez (N°308) and South African Chris Wisser (N°329).
With the exception of the chassis and engine, Neil Woolridge Motorsport has scheduled significant rebuilds for the cars (transmission, suspension, clutch, differential, brakes, etc.) during the mid-event rest day in Salta.
A 10-tonne T4 has been entered as the rapid service vehicle, along with two 26-tonne 6x6 trucks to carry the team’s equipment which includes 128 wheels fitted with Michelin tyres. The rest of the 27-strong team will travel in a fleet of six Ford Rangers, and logistics are being supervised by the German company South Racing.
“We know the Ranger is capable of going the distance,” says Neil Woolridge who is targeting a top-10 finish. “However, the Dakar is 80% down to preparation and 20% down to luck…”
Lucio Alvarez, 36, is spearheading Team Ford Racing’s effort. His Dakar debut in 2011 bagged 17th place, which was followed by a top-five finish 12 months later. In 2013, Lucio was third overall before being delayed by mechanical trouble. The other Ford Racing Ranger is in the hands of South Africa’s 2011 cross-country champion Chris Wisser, a Dakar rookie.

Deux Ford Racing Ranger sont engagés avec succès cette année en championnat Tout-Terrain sud-africain.
Un soin particulier a été apporté au châssis qui compte quelque 1600 éléments et des matériaux de haute technologie tels que le chrome-molybdène ou le Domex également utilisés en aéronautique. Neil Woolridge Motorsport a également dû fabriquer de nombreuses pièces de rechange pour cette épreuve. Hormis le châssis et le moteur, tout sera changé lors de la journée de repos à Salta après la première semaine de course (transmissions, suspensions, embrayage, différentiels, freins…).
Un T4 de 10 tonnes sera engagé en course pour assurer une assistance rapide, et deux 6x6 de 26 tonnes transporteront tout le matériel de bivouac en bivouac, dont 128 jantes montées de pneus Michelin. Le reste du team (27 personnes au total) voyagera à bord de six Ford Ranger. La logistique est gérée par South Racing basée en Allemagne.
Pour ces débuts, l’objectif est de finir dans le top-ten. « Après nos tests et les courses disputées cette saison, on sait que le Ford Racing Ranger peut tenir la distance. Mais le Dakar, c’est 80% de préparation et 20% de chance », a déclaré Neil Woolridge.
L’Argentin Lucio Alvarez (36 ans) sera pilote n°1 du Team Ford Racing. En 2011, pour sa première participation, il avait terminé à la 17e place. L’année suivante, il était entré dans le top-five. En 2013, Lucio était 3e du classement général avant d’être retardé par des problèmes mécaniques. Le second Ford Racing Ranger sera piloté par le Sud-Africain Chris Wisser, champion national Cross-Country en 2011, qui va découvrir le Rallye Dakar.
