After coming second in 2013, South Africa’s Giniel de Villiers is targeting victory this time round in his Toyota. Several similar Hilux pickups have been entered by Overdrive.
Deuxième en 2013, le Sud-Africain Giniel de Villiers aimerait gravir une marche supplémentaire cette année au volant de son Toyota Pickup Hilux dont plusieurs autres exemplaires sont engagés par le team Overdrive.
Giniel de Villiers (N°302) won the first Dakar to take place in South America in 2009, before securing podium honours in 2012 and 2013 in a Michelin-equipped Toyota Hilux prepared by Imperial Toyota South Africa Team. This time, the team has entered a second car for rookie Lerroy Poulter (N°323).
Designed and built in South Africa for the 2012 Dakar, the ‘factory’ prototype has been improved for this year’s event and is now powered by the Lexus IS-F’s 4,969cc, 310hp, 32-valve petrol V8. The air conditioning system is new, too, and the chassis has been modified.
This is the South African squad’s third Dakar, so it has a better understanding of the event’s subtleties. Meanwhile, after another campaign in the team’s home off-road series in 2013, its cars underwent a long test (2,000km) in the Namibian desert before being rebuilt and shipped to Argentina.
De Villiers’ Hilux from 2013 is in the hands of Thomas Rundle (N°404), winner of last year’s Dakar Challenge thanks to his victory in Botswana.
The Belgian operation Overdrive has also entered several Hilux pickups. The experienced Marek Dabrowski (N°328) is contesting the Dakar for the 13th time after a season that saw him come second on the Baja Poland and fifth on the Rallye du Maroc. Fellow Pole Adam Malysz (N°322), a multiple ski-jumping world champion, has chosen an Overdrive-run Hilux for his third Dakar, too.
Overdrive is also looking after Toyotas for Kazakh drivers Aidyn Rakhimbaiev (N°356) and Bauyrzhan Issabayev (N°368), plus two others for Dutchman Peter Van Merksteijn (N°335) and Russia’s Leonid Ogorodnikov (N°341).
Vainqueur du Rallye Dakar 2009 organisé pour la première fois en Amérique du Sud, Giniel de Villiers (n°302) est monté sur le podium final des deux dernières éditions au volant de son Pickup Toyota Hilux/Michelin préparé par la structure Imperial Toyota South Africa Team qui engage un second prototype cette année pour le « rookie » Lerroy Poulter (n°323).
Conçus en Afrique-du-Sud pour l’édition 2012, les prototypes Toyota Hilux « officiels » ont été améliorés pour le Dakar 2014, en particulier au niveau du moteur essence V8 puisqu’il s’agit désormais du 4969 cm3 32 soupapes à injection directe provenant de la Lexus IS-F qui développe 310 ch. Autres nouveautés, le système d’air conditionné et un châssis modifié.
L’équipe sud-africaine va disputer son 3e Rallye Dakar et connaît désormais toute les subtilités de cette course. Après une nouvelle saison en championnat national Tout-Terrain, les Hilux ont effectué une longue séance d’essais (2000 km) dans le désert namibien avant d’être reconditionnés et envoyés en Argentine.
Un autre Pickup Toyota Hilux – celui piloté par De Villiers l’an passé - est confié à Thomas Rundle (n°404), vainqueur du Dakar Challenge après sa victoire au Bostwana. De nombreux autres exemplaires sont également engagés par l’équipe belge Overdrive.
L’expérimenté Marek Dabrowski (n°328) va disputer son 13e Rallye Dakar après une saison riche d’une 2e place sur la Baja Poland et une 5e au Rallye du Maroc. Son compatriote Adam Malysz (n°322), multiple champion du monde de saut à ski, sera lui aussi au volant d’un Hilux Overdrive pour son 3e Dakar.
Overdrive engage également deux Toyota pour l’équipe Astana composée des Kazakhs Aidyn Rakhimbaiev (n°356) et Bauyrzhan Issabayev (n°368), sans oublier deux prototypes supplémentaires pour le Néerlandais Peter Van Merksteijn (n°335) et le Russe Leonid Ogorodnikov (n°341).
