After claiming five Dakar wins with KTM, Cyril Despres is defending the colours of Yamaha Factory Racing-Michelin on the 2014 Dakar. Arch-rival Marc Coma (KTM-Michelin) will be targeting a fourth win on the event, helped by three experienced team-mates (Faria, Lopez and Casteu). Honda, which returned as a factory outfit in 2013, is likely to play a front-running role this time round.

Son grand rival, Marc Coma (KTM-Michelin) tentera de remporter une quatrième victoire aidé par trois coéquipiers d’expérience (Faria, Lopez et Casteu). De retour officiellement en 2013, Honda dispose des armes pour jouer les premiers rôles.
Last year’s Dakar winner Despres took on a fresh challenge last spring by moving to Yamaha. With the support of Olivier Pain and the promising Michael Metge, the Frenchman will be hoping to equal the record of six Dakar wins (currently held by Stéphane Peterhansel) and has focused essentially on developing his bike during the past six months.
“The easy option would have been to stay at KTM, but changing teams keeps you on your toes,” says Despres. “I just want to see if I can win this event again on a different bike. I’ve got experience on my side. The other riders are very fast, but they don’t scare me. There aren’t many of us who have been consistently at the front year after year.”
Despres will face competition chiefly from his longstanding rival and former team-mate Marc Coma. After sitting out last year’s Dakar because of a shoulder injury, the Catalonian rider is keen to make up for lost time and add a fourth win to his name. He will be able to count on the valuable help of team-mates Ruben Faria, Chaleco Lopez and KTM newcomer David Casteu.
Honda returned to the event as a factory operation in 2013. After taking the time to find its marks again, it is targeting outright victory this time round. Its bid will be spearheaded by Helder Rodrigues, who will have the support of the reigning world champion Paolo Gonçalves (Michelin) and Joan Barreda (Michelin), winner of four stages in 2013.
Once again, engine changes during the event will continue to cost 15 minutes for the first swap, then 45 minutes for the second and two hours for each additional change. To take the top prize at the finish in Valparaiso, Chile, on Saturday, January 18, will call for a smart blend of speed and consistency…
Quintuple vainqueur de l’épreuve et tenant du titre, Cyril Despres s’est lancé un nouveau challenge en rejoignant l’équipe Yamaha au printemps 2013. Le Français, épaulé par Olivier Pain et du prometteur Michael Metge, tentera d’égaler le record de six victoires détenu par Stéphane Peterhansel. Il s’est essentiellement consacré au développement de la moto durant les six derniers mois.
«J'aurais pu choisir la simplicité, et rester chez KTM. Mais changer de marque, c'est une remise en question nécessaire » assure Despres. « ll n'y a qu'une seule question qui m'intéresse, c'est de savoir si je suis capable de changer de moto et continuer à gagner cette course. La clé de ma réussite, c'est l'expérience. Je ne me bats pas avec les autres : ils progressent, ils vont vite, mais ils ne me font pas peur. Après tout, nous ne sommes pas nombreux à avoir prouvé que nous pouvions être réguliers, année après année ».
Despres devra affronter son grand rival et ancien coéquipier Marc Coma pour réussir son pari. Privé de Dakar en 2013 suite à une luxation de l’épaule, le Catalan est avide de victoires et compte bien combler son retard en ajoutant un quatrième succès à son palmarès. Il pourra compter sur l’aide précieuse de ses coéquipiers habitués au podium, Ruben Faria, Chaleco Lopez et le nouveau venu chez KTM David Casteu.
Après une première année d’apprentissage en 2013, les ambitions sont élevées du côté de l’écurie officielle Honda où l’on vise la victoire finale. Fer de lance de l’équipe, Helder Rodrigues, sera entouré du champion du monde en titre Paolo Gonçalves (Michelin) et de Joan Barreda (Michelin), auteur de quatre victoires d’étape l’an passé.
Comme en 2013, les changements de moteur seront pénalisés, 15 minutes pour le premier changement, 45 pour le second et 2h00 pour le troisième et les suivants. Le vainqueur de l’édition 2014 devra rallier l’arrivée des 13 étapes et ménager sa monture pour enlever la victoire samedi 18 janvier à Valparaiso (Chili).
