Le pilote du team Movistar Yamaha MotoGP a fini deuxième du Grand Prix Monster Energy de Catalogne après avoir mené durant une bonne partie de la course.
Valentino Rossi s’est battu avec Dani Pedrosa et Marc Márquez du début à la fin de la course dimanche à Montmeló. Le nonuple Champion du Monde a pris l’initiative dès les premiers tours et n’a concédé la première position qu’en fin d’épreuve.
Clairement battu par les deux Espagnols dans le dernier tour après une bonne bagarre, Rossi a profité de l’erreur de Pedrosa, qui a touché la roue arrière de Márquez, pour reprendre la seconde position avant le dernier virage et se confirmer à la deuxième place du classement général, à 58 points de Márquez et avec cinq longueurs d’avance sur Pedrosa.
« Je pense que c’est ma meilleure course cette saison, » a déclaré Rossi, présent sur le podium pour la cinquième fois en sept courses cette année. « Je me suis vraiment fait plaisir. Je suis très satisfait. J’avais fait un bon tour en qualifications alors que je n'étais pas confiant. »
« Nous avions modifié la moto avec le team et j’avais beaucoup plus de feeling à l’avant pour la course, si bien que j’ai pu être plus fort et plus rapide. Je me sentais très bien avant la course malgré ma petite glissade ! » a ajouté Rossi en référence à sa chute lors du warm-up de dimanche matin.
« J’ai attaqué au départ. Les températures étaient de notre côté et nous n’aurions pas pu nous battre pour la victoire s’il avait fait plus chaud. Je commençais à sentir la victoire à quelques tours de l’arrivée mais Marc m’a alors doublé, Dani aussi et j’ai perdu à ce moment-là. C’était impossible de revenir. »

The nine-time World Champion battled all race with the Repsol Honda pair of Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez. Rossi was able to lead for a large part of the race, even having an advantage of over one second after Marquez ran wide at one stage.
There was some confusion at Turn Three mid-race due to a yellow flag, causing the leading group to close up. The last few laps saw Marquez and Pedrosa create a small gap, however Pedrosa touched Marquez’s back wheel on the final lap, causing the pole setter to run wide. Rossi was able to take advantage of this and grab second with just one corner left.
This was the Italian rider’s fifth podium of the year. He sits in second in the standings with 117 points, five clear of Pedrosa.
"I think that it’s my best race of the season," said Rossi afterwards. "I enjoyed it a lot. I am very satisfied. I made a good lap in qualifying despite not feeling confident. We modified the bike with the team and I had a lot more front feeling, I was stronger and faster. I felt good coming into the race despite my little slide!" commented Rossi referring to his morning Warm Up crash.
rn He added, "I pushed at the start. The temperature was better for us, if it was hotter we could not have fought for the victory. I started to taste the victory some laps from the end, but then Marc overtook me and then Dani overtook me so I lost a bit. It was impossible to come back."
