With the 2014 WRC poised to begin the ‘winegrowing region’ phase of its calendar, with upcoming visits to Germany, France and Spain, we’ve found a good excuse to raise the subject of wine a little early in Finland, a country that tends not to boast many famous vintages!
Indeed, it imports some 65 million litres of wine annually (2012 figure) from France, Chile, Italy, Spain and New Zealand. In 2006, a pinot noir from the latter took the bronze medal at Finland’s Wine of the Year Awards. Three years later, a white Marlborough Sauvignon took gold. Both these wines were produced by the business of John Kennard, the man who calls out pace notes for Hyundai’s Hayden Paddon.
Alors que le WRC va rentrer dans son épisode annuel « vin et rallye » avec l’Allemagne, la France et l’Espagne, c’est avec un peu d’avance que nous ouvrons cette rubrique.
A priori, pas de grands crus en Finlande. Le pays importe donc massivement (65 millions de litres en 2012) du vin de France, du Chili, d’Italie, d’Espagne et de Nouvelle-Zélande. En 2006, un pinot noir des antipodes avait reçu une médaille de bronze au « Wine of the Yearr Awards » en Finlande. Trois ans plus tard, un Marlborough Sauvignon blanc y a obtenu une médaille d’or. Ces deux vins provenaient de l’exploitation de John Kennard, copilote d’Hayden Paddon dans la Hyundai i20 WRC/Michelin n°20.
On Wednesday evening, Hyundai Motorsport organised an informal tasting session featuring Vicarage Lanes produce. That gave us a chance to chat with John whose WRC career began with the 1985 Rally of the 1000 Lakes after competing as a driver on events at home.
In April 2002, after spending several seasons as team manager or coordinator for operations like Mitsubishi Japan, Prodrive WRT and Mitsubishi USA, he founded Vicarage Lanes based in Marlborough province, in the north of New Zealand’s southern island, just opposite Wellington. Half the initial four-hectare site produced a sauvignon white. Today, the 7.6-hectare property also produces a riesling, a sparkling sauvignon white and a pinot noir red. More than 105,000 litres of sauvignon white were produced in 2014.
John Kennard’s wines are held in high esteem and the 2013 Marlborough Sauvignon is served by Air New Zealand. Last year, he sold off half the company but still runs the domain with his Finnish wife Satu and his cellar manager Alan McCorkindale. The property also includes holiday cottages with views over the vineyards for a memorable Cloudy Bay immersion experience…
Mercredi soir, Hyundai Motorsport avait organisé une petite dégustation de vins produits par Vicarage Lanes à son motor-home, l’occasion de discuter avec John le vigneron, dont la carrière de copilote en WRC avait débuté au Rally des 1000 Lacs en 1985 après avoir disputé quelques épreuves derrière le volant en Nouvelle-Zélande.
Après plusieurs saisons de management et de coordination pour différents teams (Mitsubishi Japon, Prodrive WRT, Mitsubishi USA…), John Kennard a fondé Vicarage Lanes en avril 2002 dans la province de Marlborough, à l’extrémité nord de l’île du Sud (juste en face de Wellington) sur un domaine viticole de quelque quatre hectares, dont la moitié de sauvignon blanc. Aujourd’hui, le domaine de 7,6 hectares produit également du vin blanc riesling, du sauvignon blanc pétillant et du vin rouge pinot noir. Plus de 105 000 litres de sauvignon blanc millésime 2014 ont été produits.
Les vins de John Kennard sont régulièrement primés et reconnus, comme le Marlborough Sauvignon blanc 2013 servi par la compagnie Air New Zeland. L’an passé, John a revendu la moitié de sa société, mais reste directeur du domaine où il travaille avec sa femme d’origine finlandaise, Satu, et son maître de chai, Alan McCorkindale. Le domaine propose aussi à la location des cottages qui surplombent le vignoble pour un séjour-dégustation à Cloudy Bay…
