La première course de l'avant-dernière manche du Championnat du Monde eni FIM Superbike 2014 a été écourtée à 19 tours avant son départ dimanche à Magny-Cours en raison des conditions météo et suite à un warm-up marqué par plusieurs chutes.
Sur une piste complètement trempée, Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) a tenté sa chance et est parti seul en tête en début de course tandis que Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) se lançait à sa poursuite après avoir doublé Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) à la fin du premier tour. Le Français a rapidement rattrapé Rea pour s'emparer de la première position et creuser l'écart sur ses concurrents.
Alors que Sykes luttait avec Rea et Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team), Marco Melandri (Aprilia Racing Team) s'est montré nettement supérieur sur la seconde partie de la course et a fini par rattraper et doubler Guintoli, avant de laisser son coéquipier s'imposer, respectant les consignes d'équipe qui lui avaient été données.
A quelques secondes des pilotes Aprilia, Rea a pris la troisième place tandis que Baz a concédé la quatrième place à Sykes dans le dernier tour, respectant lui aussi lui aussi les consignes de son équipe.
Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike) a pris la sixième place devant Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team), qui avait chuté en début d'épreuve.
Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia) s'est imposé dans la catégorie EVO, en finissant à la dixième place, tandis que David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team) avait choisi de ne pas participer à la course.
Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team), Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia), Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki), Xavi Fores (3C Racing Team) et Alessandro Andreozzi (Team Pedercini) ont tous été victimes des difficiles conditions météo et ont chuté.
Fabien Foret (Team Pedercini) est lui aussi tombé alors qu'il occupait la sixième position puis est reparti pour finir quinzième, devant Nicolas Salchaud (Dream Team Company). Jérémy Guarnoni (MRS Kawasaki) a quant à lui pris la douzième place.
Grâce à sa victoire, Guintoli revient à dix-neuf points de Sykes dans le classement général avant la seconde course de la journée.
La seconde course du Championnat du Monde eni FIM Superbike à Magny-Cours a eu lieu sur une piste trempée, dans des condititions similaires à celles de la première épreuve de la journée, et a été remportée par Marco Melandri (Aprilia Racing Team).
Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) avait réussi à distancer ses adversaires en début de course mais a subi un highside dans le onzième tour et, bien qu'il ait pu remonter sur sa moto, n'a pas pu terminer la course.
Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) et Melandri ont été promus aux deux premières positions par la chute de Rea et le Français a de nouveau été battu par l'Italien, qui a choisi de ne pas suivre les consignes d'équipe après avoir déjà offert une victoire à son coéquipier dans la première course.
En prenant la deuxième place, Guintoli réduisait quand même à douze points son retard sur le leader du Championnat, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team), qui a été devancé par son compatriote Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) pour la troisième place en fin de course. Haslam montait ainsi sur le podium WSBK pour la première fois depuis Misano 2012 mais aussi depuis son arrivée chez Pata Honda.
Lorenzo Lanzi (3C Racing Ducati) s'est lui aussi distingué en allant chercher la cinquième place, devant son coéquipier Max Neukirchner et Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team).
Fabien Foret, qui faisait sa dernière course en WSBK en wildcard avec le Team Pedercini, a fini en onzième position, derrière Niccolo Canepa (Althea Racing Ducati), premier pilote EVO à l'arrivée.
Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia) avait pour sa part chuté à deux reprises et été contraint à l'abandon. Les autres Français, Jérémy Guarnoni (MRS Kawasaki) et Nicolas Salchaud (Dream Team Company), ont aussi été contraints à l'abandon.
Le Team Toth BMW avait ses deux pilotes dans les points pour la toute première fois suite aux quatorzième et quinzième places de Gabor Rizmayer et d'Imre Toth.
RACE 1 : Aprilia 1-2 in France as both they and Kawasaki issue team orders.
In the early laps it was Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) who led the way with the spray making it extremely difficult for the mid-field riders. Behind him Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) gave chase after passing Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) at the end of lap 1.
Guintoli was soon ahead of Rea and the Frenchman began to ease away, much to the delighted French crowd who were also braving the conditions.
By one third distance the Aprilia at the front was Guintoli was ahead of the chasing pack with now Marco Melandri playing shotgun to his team mate ahead of Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) who had also overhauled Sykes and Rea who began to lose touch with the leaders.
With 5 laps to go Melandri had closed to within a second and the Aprilia duo were left to fight it out for the win with the victory eventually going the way of Guintoli after it appeared that Aprilia team orders intervened.
Melandri was 2nd as Rea completed the podium with Sykes, Baz and Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) completing the top 6.
In the EVO category Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia) claimed a solid 10th position to close the gap on EVO points leader David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team) who elected not to ride.
Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team), Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia), Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki), Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team), Xavi Fores (3C Racing Team), Alessandro Andreozzi (Team Pedercini) all crashed without injury with Giugliano and Laverty re-joining to finish 7th and 19th respectively.
RACE2 : Aprilia do the double again in France.
Long time leader Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) crashed spectacularly on lap 11, before remounting only to retire to the pits.
That left the Aprilia pairing of Sylvain Guintoli and Marco Melandri to dual it out for the victory with the Italian getting the better of his French team mate this time out.
Leon Haslam rode superbly aboard his Honda overhauling reigning champion Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) in the closing stages to take his first podium since Misano 2012 and his first since joining the Pata Honda World Superbike team.
Behind the top four, Lorenzo Lanzi (3C Racing Ducati), and his team mate Max Neukirchner completed the top six.
In the EVO fight, top honours went to Niccolo Canepa (Althea Racing Ducati). Best classified EVO rider in race one Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia) crashed twice, the second signalling the end of his race. He was uninjured.
For Team Toth BMW it was a race for real celebration as both of their riders scored points in the same race for the first time in their short WSBK career.
