As the teams filter into Ensenada Baja California for the General Tires NORRA Mexican 1000 rally, the first stop is naturally the Horsepower Ranch. Friday was the tech inspection for the bikes that will be racing, and there was a varied approach to what they will be riding.
One team chose a 1970 Husqvarna 400, because that’s what Malcolm Smith and Steve McQueen rode in “On Any Sunday.” They even named themselves McQueenKong, which is a riff on another team’s HondZilla tag. There are two “Yellow Jacket” motorcycle club members aboard a 1970 Triumph. The Yellow Jacket’s were a racing club dating back to the 1930’s, and they are in Baja “to give this race hell.”
A few cars and trucks arrived too as Rod Hall and his posse were on hand with their vintage Bronco, Other vintage race vehicles included the “Snortin’ Norton” Nova, Malcolm and Bud Feldcamp’s Baja winning Funco single seater and James Garner’s modified Manx along with a few trucks and a bunch of Bronco’s.
Tech inspection for the cars/trucks will take place later today, and we’ll be there to bring you the latest, so stay tuned.
