Le champion WTCC José María López s’impose dans la première des deux courses de l’Eurodatacar WTCC Race of Morocco. L’Argentin devance ses équipiers Ma Qing Hua et Sébastien Loeb au sein d’une équipe Citroën qui réalise un nouveau triplé dans les rues étroites de Marrakech.

Le héros local Mehdi Bennani s’élançait au deuxième rang mais le cède à Ma et Loeb dans le premier virage. Malgré un duel de toute beauté avec son patron, le Marocain se contente échoue au pied du podium mais devance Yvan Muller, bien remonté de sa 10^e place sur la grille.

Tiago Monteiro et Gabriele Tarquini concluent l’épreuve aux 6^e et 7^e rangs au volant de leur Honda officielle, tandis que la machine japonaise privée de Norbert Michelisz se hisse en 8^e position devant Stefano D’Aste et Tom Chilton, ce dernier qui délogea la LADA de James Thompson du Top-10.

Cependant, un incident dans le premier tour entre Chilton et son équipier chez ROAL Motorsport Tom Coronel est actuellement sous enquête. Le Hollandais fut ainsi contraint à l’abandon, tandis que Hugo Valente ne put s’extraire de la grille à cause d’un problème technique.

WTCC champion José María López has won the first Eurodatacar WTCC Race of Morocco with Citroën team-mates Ma Qing Hua and Sébastien Loeb completing the top three following an intense contest on the streets of Marrakech.

Home hero Mehdi Bennani started second but lost out to Loeb at the first corner. Despite a determined charge to wrestle the place back from his team boss, the Moroccan driver settled for fourth with Yvan Muller fighting back from 10^th to fifth at the flag.

Tiago Monteiro and Gabriele Tarquini were sixth and seventh for Honda respectively with Norbert Michelisz eighth, Stefano D’Aste ninth and Tom Chilton 10^th after he overtook LADA’s James Thompson.

However, a first-lap incident between Chilton and his ROAL Motorsport team-mate Tom Coronel is being investigated by the event stewards. Coronel was forced to retire following the clash at one of the track’s tight chicanes. Hugo Valente failed to make it off the grid due to a suspected mechanical fault.

Race two, which forms round four of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, is due to get underway at 17h30 local time. Click herefor live timing and results.
